Well, growling in general can be hard to take seriously for someone for whom it doesn't click.

Statutory Ape 09-09-2006 03:27 PM

Well basically this is an Opeth thread, so when I find a Black Dahlia Murder thread or such i'll be sure to make fun of their growl.

I find it comical becuase he sounds like the cookie monster, I don't hate it, it's quite enjoyable, just kinda smirk worthy.

Thor 09-09-2006 03:35 PM
The only Opeth album I have is Blackwater Park, and it's quite good, I don't really find myself listening to it often, but every now and again a song pops up on my iTunes and i'll pay attention. I love his clean vocals, but his growl is kind of comical.
Mikael's growls straight up own, stop with your blaspheming.

Statutory Ape 09-09-2006 03:36 PM

Okay crazy lady

Thor 09-09-2006 03:37 PM
Okay crazy lady
That's the spirit. Most people in here are Opeth fanboys (including myself) so whenever anyone says something negative about their stuff I naturally freak out.

Statutory Ape 09-09-2006 03:53 PM

I wasn't trying to be negative...I said it in a light spirited way. I really like Opeth, just the growl is always good fr a laugh.

What's that in your avatar? (Sorry for spam)

Divine my boy.

And I shook Trevor Strnad's hand last night.

Be jealous.

Shattered_Future 09-09-2006 05:33 PM

What makes Blackwater Park so freaking good? The first 4 tracks are genius...especially when you're eating.

Daven 09-09-2006 05:39 PM

The best track, IMO, off BWP is Bleak.

Det_Nosnip 09-09-2006 06:03 PM

You would not be alone in that opinion.

Stoo 09-09-2006 06:18 PM

no you would not

TojesDolan 09-09-2006 06:22 PM

The leper affinity is very consistent.

Daven 09-09-2006 06:40 PM

TLA is very good as well.

Shattered_Future 09-09-2006 06:47 PM

I think Bleak edges it out a bit more.

Stoo 09-09-2006 06:49 PM

I desperately want to see Blackwater Park live. Fantastic song.

Brutal...

Beautiful...

Blackwater Park...

Boring...

Daven 09-09-2006 06:51 PM

You dont like BWP, SF?

Shattered_Future 09-09-2006 06:51 PM

Not the first 5 minutes, no...

Stoo 09-09-2006 06:53 PM

you suck

get out!

Daven 09-09-2006 06:54 PM

The beginning is my favorite part of the song. What i dont like about it, is the acoustic riff that gets repeated like 1000 times.

Shattered_Future 09-09-2006 07:10 PM
The beginning is my favorite part of the song. What i dont like about it, is the acoustic riff that gets repeated like 1000 times.
Exactly. The beginning riff is passable, but it just spirals down. I skip right to the part with the layered vocals, which is my favorite part of the whole freaking album.

RouteOne 09-09-2006 07:16 PM

Opeth are ok I guess.

i am the robots 09-09-2006 07:26 PM

 that was the most amazing post ever.

You fast-forward through a song to get to a certain part? Talk about killing it. Yow.

Shattered_Future 09-09-2006 07:34 PM

I can't help it if I love parts of a song, but hate others. I don't want to sit through 3 minutes of a crappy acoustic riff.

Kage 09-09-2006 07:35 PM

I assume you're talking about the huge breakout after the acoustic section. While that part is amazing, it's made all the better by the long build up to it. It makes the release just that much more exciting and satisfying. But I adore every single part of that song like a son, so that's just me.

Jude 09-09-2006 07:49 PM

The beginning of BWP is awesome. The riffs are just sick and amazing. Then the acoustic section drags on soooooooooo damn long...and IMO the section after it isn't too amazing.

Fortunately it ends with one of the most awe-inspiring 5 minutes of music ever.

Daven 09-09-2006 07:54 PM

^^Âgreed.

ironmanx 09-09-2006 08:14 PM

THE SUUN SETS FOREVERRRRR OVER BLACKWATER PAAAAARRRKK!!!

that gives me chills every damn time. My neck just goes numb. Such an emotional and powerful moment.

TojesDolan 09-09-2006 08:57 PM

If the acoustic riff was repeated only say, one time and they didn't go to coda, the song would keep the edge.

One of the best closers to any Opeth album. To Bid You Farewell is the only other one to top it.

Yup. Although I dunno, White Cluster is absolute madness.

Especially live. Very intense.

Clunge 09-10-2006 04:12 AM

BWP is probably both my favourite Opeth song and album.

It's just, immense all the time.

Though I do dig their acoustic stuff more than their heavy stuff, but every second of the BWP album just grips me.

Yes Still Life kicks *** almost more than BWP. :thumb:

VomitStainedCretin 09-10-2006 10:05 AM

I was kind of disappointed when I first heard White Cluster, but after a while it really grows on you. I love Mikhael clean singing in this part:
"They wear white for me
Seemingly jaded and lost
I forge myself into your dreams
And here I am your life "

The only problem I have with that song is that the initial clean guitar part goes on for a bit too long without really changing. That's about it, though.

RouteOne 09-10-2006 10:50 AM

I love BWP, but i don't like the song blackwater park, oddly enough.

Thor 09-10-2006 10:52 AM
I love BWP, but i don't like the song blackwater park, oddly enough.
That is odd, seeing as how most fans of that album adore that song.

What's your reasoning?
