How is Damnation? I heard from a particularily picky friend that it's not as good, but he's pretty serious about the music he listens to.

I really like Orchid, BWP, Still Life is cool, I haven't listened to much of Morningrise, but I love "To Bid You Farewell". Do you guys think I'd like Damnation? I also wondering cause I heard they play it on Lamentations.

Kage 09-06-2006 05:24 PM

Damnation is clean/acoustic. Dark and quite beautiful. I love it. If your liking of Opeth isn't dependent upon high-octane heavy sections, then you'll undoubtedly like it.

It's really a beautiful album.
I have Damnation and My Arms, Your Hearse already from the Daily Upload, but if you're recommending that, I'll get it.
The title track is amazing:)

Pickles 09-06-2006 07:23 PM

Quick question guys. What are some essential Opeth CDs to get? I'm pretty sure I have Black Water Park but I've never listened to it for some odd reason.

Otherside 09-06-2006 07:27 PM

Listen to it then, it's one of the best to start on.

Shattered_Future 09-06-2006 07:35 PM

Yea, BWP is your best bet if you're just getting into Opeth.

Pickles 09-06-2006 07:36 PM

Alright, thanks guys :thumb:

Kage 09-06-2006 07:48 PM

Is that Devin Townsend in your avatar?

Darkness 09-06-2006 07:49 PM

If you're talking to Pickles, then no. That's the drummer from Dethklok.

Kage 09-06-2006 07:50 PM

His hair looks a lot like how Devin Townsend wears it these days.

Never seen Dethklok, don't particularly want to.

Pickles 09-06-2006 07:50 PM

It's Pickles the Drummer from the show Metalocalypse, the band Dethklok. His character's look is based on Devin though.
My God, Dirge of November is so awesome.
No kidding. It's one of Opeth's most underrated songs IMO.

magicbus 09-06-2006 09:29 PM

I've got no problem with clean/acoustic, I like everything about Opeth.

So I'll probably check out Damnation then.

Damnation is secks for teh ears.

Det_Nosnip 09-06-2006 11:15 PM

Much preferable to secks in teh ears, if you ask me.

Insipid2000 09-06-2006 11:56 PM

DAMNATION! - rules.

pate 09-07-2006 12:01 AM

Indeed it is. It was my favorite Opeth album for awhile, but now it's right in the middle.

BurningSky 09-07-2006 12:03 AM

Damnation might be Opeth's most mature album to date. The melodies are extremely melancholy, the song structures are their best yet, the bass and drums mesh perfectly, and the production is solid...

TojesDolan 09-07-2006 10:59 AM

The lyrics are lightly cheesy.

Which Mike didn't want them to be, anyway. But they are lighlty cheesy here or there.

Nonetheless good lyrics.

Kage 09-07-2006 11:04 AM

That's bound to happen from time to time.

Kronos 09-07-2006 11:10 AM

Damnation cheesy lyrics? Where? Examples please!

Summer is miles and miles away
And no one would ask me to stay

Taken from "In my time of need".

In the corner beside my window
There hangs a lonely photograph
There is no reason
I'd never notice
A memory that could hold me back

There is a wound that's always bleeding
There is a road I'm always walking
And I know you'll never return to this place

That's borderline cheesy, taken from "Hope leaves".

Stain me, save me
Take me to my home
Hold me, show me
Take me to my home

"Weakness".

As beautiful as they are they are CHEESY LYRICS, LYRICS that you can find in most pop albums, but written better. It was hard to pick moments that I find cheesy. They are good lyrics, I adore them. BUT THEY ARE CHEESY.

Kronos 09-07-2006 03:41 PM

Fair enough. It took you to remind me....

Anyway, I wish I could write lyrics like Mikael - and he's not even a native english speaker.

Shows us all up

jpshortstuff 09-07-2006 03:42 PM

^^ i know exactly what you mean with the pop album thingy. i rarely listen to lyrics intently enough to notice/care, but when there is a passage on Damnation or other songs that i do listen i notice this.

but who cares?

pate 09-07-2006 03:57 PM

They're sort of trite-ish.

TojesDolan 09-07-2006 04:19 PM
How are they cheesy?
They are common-place-love-lyrics.

They are not bad at all. I mean, you can relate to those and they are some of my favorite choruses that Mike has ever come up with, but they are nonetheless common-place.

I've found Opeth's lyrics to more likely be nonsensical than cheesy.

Shattered_Future 09-07-2006 05:15 PM

I like Mike's lyrics. And this is coming from somebody who thinks lyrics mean just a little more than how the band dresses.

Toaster 09-07-2006 09:12 PM
I've found Opeth's lyrics to more likely be nonsensical than cheesy.
Same. I mean, they're great and all, and flow with the music very well most of the time, but sometimes you can tell Mike just strings some cool-sounding phrases together. Many more of his lyrics are very meaningful though.

lightningmetal666 09-07-2006 09:45 PM

Finally I've managed to listen to Blackwater park just to see what the hype was all about and DAAAAMMMMMN!!!!

This has to be one of the best Cd's i've ever listened to. Stand out tracks for me are the title track and the drapery falls.

Plus, I'm going to go see them live on Sunday. I cannot wait.

They're a fun show. You'll probably have a blast.

Darkness 09-07-2006 10:59 PM

They sure are. I would know since I've seen em twice.

pate 09-07-2006 11:15 PM

Same. In two weeks it'll be three.

VomitStainedCretin 09-08-2006 02:06 AM

Seeing them in November - should be a Dirge (bad pun, sorry). What do you guys think of the support act Paradise Lost, I havent listened to them so Id be interested in your opinion.

Paradise Lost own.

They've been around since 1988 and basically invented doom/goth metal.

I love them. Saw them last year support Nightwish at The Apollo and I'm really glad they'll be supporting Opeth at The Roundhouse (I'm going too)

Nick Holmes and Mikael get on like a house on fire - Mike thinks Nick's the funniest man alive and they've supported Opeth before.
If you post your email I'll send you a couple of their tracks as a sampler if you want.
I = huge PL fanboy. :)

pate 09-08-2006 08:35 AM

Opeth's Gigantour setlist, as confirmed by Dave Mustaine:

Ghost of Perdition
Godhead's Lament
Windowpane
Deliverance
Leper Affinity

Oh hell yes :) :)

suspect 09-08-2006 08:50 AM

Wow, the interlude in the middle of Harlequin Forest is sex for the ears. I've just started listening to Ghost Reveries again, for the first time since it was released. Its a great album, that although it doesn't measure up to Opeth's best ones, is good in is own right.
