Hmmm...maybe I'm the black sheep of the bunch this time. I just think of it as a repeat of everything the album has already offered at that point. I also looked on their website and found that it's one of Peter's favorite Opeth songs. For shame. :upset: |

This is really funny, because the two songs you mentioned are the ones I don't think are as good. It's not that they're bad songs, but they aren't nearly as strong as the beasts like Windowpane, In My Time of Need, and Ending Credits. |
Any news on the new album?
Any news on the new album?
Nothing so far, unless I've missed some rare interview. They haven't updated their website with anything interesting in quite a while. :upset: |
I know a lot of you love GR, but I hope their new album isn't like it.....just me though.

It's not exactly my cup of tea, either. I like how they got heavier, but I think that some of their songs just drag on for wayyyy too long. Still, Ghost of Perdition is one of the band's strongest songs to date. |

NP: Isengard: Vinterskugge
Pop-ish? Quite the contrary! I've never heard them be so heavy in my life! |
Yeah GR wasn't too great.
The tour for the album was though. Under a Weeping Moon ftw |

The riffs and just the sound of the songs just remind me of more mainstream stuff, idk. |
I know a lot of you love GR, but I hope their new album isn't like it.....just me though.
I agree... I hope it's quite different. DWAL is my least favorite Damnation song, and probably least favorite Opeth song. |
I think the reason people find it "poppish" is because they actually use a few major-key riffs in it, as opposed to the standard minor-key metal riffing. I still don't fully understand how you could not like the album though.. not that I want to start another discussion on it. :p

Im very happy because a friend and I nailed the first half of Bleak. :)
|
I don't have an Opeth song that I hate. I have ones that I love and ones that I love a tiny bit less.
|
It just occurred to me today that the excuse that some people have saying that earlier Opeth was amateur and just parts glued together is a bunch of BS. Today I decided to give Blackwater Park a spin (its been a while). Now listen to The Drapery Falls, Blackwater Park (the song), and The Funeral Portrait and tell me that that isn't the same type of structure that earlier Opeth (Orchid/Morningrise) used. Its all the same, just better production and better everything else. I just wanted to point out that when people say that its total BS.
|
Nah, the structure is pretty much the same but it doesn't flow as well on the earlier albums. The leading is alot better on the new albums.
|
Well, there's better building and resolving of tension and things like that.
|
Yea, i suppose you guys are right in a sense too.

Lucky. No one around here ever wants to play any Opeth songs with me! I'm trying to talk one of my friends into playing Master's Apprentices or The Leper Affinity with me though. |

No.....starting at about Still Life you start to see use of verse and chorus in songs as well as repeating and varying themes throughout songs. Take The Moor, it revisits several main themes a number of times throughout. Godhead's Lament also does this, and it becomes more and more evident through many/most later Opeth songs. |
Well, there's better building and resolving of tension and things like that.
That's the main point. |
Gigantour starts today! I go on Sunday. I need to know Opeth's setlist.
|
So you can scream the next song and Mike says "Fucking internet"
yeah |
I love Mike's responses to the crowd.
2,100 w00t :chug: |
Yeah, he's a funny guy.

Meh. I don't think so. I find that the first two albums are all about riffs- the riffs come one after another, relentlessly, without repetition, until the end of the song. On every album after that, Opeth start to use recurring themes and interesting song structures, rather than just a progression of riffs. They also use far less guitar harmonizing, and rely more on melodies (especially on BWP, Still Life and GR) to carry the songs. In their early days Opeth didn't really experiment with different melodies and progressions, but lately (example: The Drapery Falls) use very unconventional chord changes, key changes, etc. for effect. Uh.. for little differences, there is more clean singing, more low-pitched growling, and in turn less screaming. The production is also less thin.. the first two albums sound very much alike in production. So basically, I think new Opeth is much different. And much better. :) |
Nope. Listen closely to Morningrise and you'll see a lot more phrasing elements. ;)
|
I've listened closely to all Opeth's material. That's the conclusion I've come to. What the hell does "phrasing elements" mean anyway? :P
|
Exactly with the first word Mike sings, someone in the audience screams. Unless there's two different versions, one with that edited out, I don't know how you could miss it.
Oh god. I just heard it and I almost cracked my ribs laughing. |
I've never really found anything by Opeth that I really liked but yesterday I was taking part in The Riff Game in the guitar forum and one of the riffs was Opeth - Master's Apprenticies, I love that riff intro/main riff.
And I never knew the vocalists voice was so damn growly, I knew he went deep at times but I didn't know he went all out death metal. |
Opeth is amazing. In every way. anyone who says different is a fool. I suggest you get Blackwater Park ASAP.
|

My friend wasnt into Opeth, but after heargin M's vocals he loved them. |

I have Damnation and My Arms, Your Hearse already from the Daily Upload, but if you're recommending that, I'll get it. |

I reccomend Still Life over BWP. |
I reccomend Ghost Reveries for diversity.
<_< |
Ghost Reveries is great too.
|
My first was Morningrise and possibly still my favorite.
Though I somewhat hate Opeth for never playing it live >:| |
My God, Dirge of November is so awesome.
