Awsome, the Simpsons with The Who was on tonight
I remember seeing that a long time ago, before knowing anything about music. I want to see it again now that I'd appreciate it so much more. I vaguely remember the Simpsons going the the Who's hotel room, and also that when the Who actually performed only the Simpsons were watching because of the whole town area code splitting-up thing. Boris The Spider was the first Who song I ever heard  |
I bought that crappy 20th Century Masters right after I first saw that episode because I thought the Who were so cool. Terrible compilation, but I love it since it did get me into the Who. I haven't seen that episode in ages.
|
I saw it last when I didn't quite get all the references, although I still liked the Who back then.
|
The Simpsons? Them were the days....:upset:

After I heard LAL I was so pissed my parents started me off on that complitation since I would have LOVED the Who right away instead of only liking them right away. |
I'm listening to Townshend's Empty Glass.
Hey robo and Jeff, how'd you guys like that Royal Albert Hall sampler I sent out? Tusk as well. Wherever he is? |
How is everyone celebrating Townshend's birthday tomorro?
|
^Oh my...
I'm going to England and kicking his old, pretentious arse. :) EDIT: So you like it pretty good, Jeff? |

i've always wanted to see that one |
Townsend's B-Day ftw.
As a celebration I've been (and will be) listening to Tommy and Quadrophenia all day. |
I'm going to England and kicking his old, pretentious arse. :)
Count me in on that, too. |
i've always wanted to see that one
I have it on video. :) Crowd: MAGIC BUS!!!! Roger: Alright, we'll play Magic Bus if you tear down this wall. [pause] Homer: PINBALL WIZARD!!! |
Oh man, have any of you ever drank to LaL? It's the best, most rebellious drinking music ever. It also, strangly, makes me really horny. Seriously, just listening to it makes me horny.
Sorry but I'm kinda gone right now. |
I have played plenty of beer pong to LaL, it gives me special powers. I wouldn't say it makes me horny though.

In case people haven't checked out Pete's news/diares from his official site,
there's entries about the new record http://www.petetownshend.co.uk/diary/display.cfm?id=265&zone=diary http://www.petetownshend.co.uk/diary/display.cfm?id=278&zone=pr There's also couple funny poems too... http://www.petetownshend.co.uk/diary/index.cfm?zone=diary |
^Thanks for that, Wanderer. I' visit his site regularly, but usually just browse the news pages looking for info. This sounds exciting. Very tight scheduling, but Pete sounds happy with it. And with his band of professional players they should have at least a few things ready to take on the road and perform from the "mini opera". It's also exciting that someone like director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road To Perdition, Jarhead) has been interested to work with them on the video/short film side, even if it doesn't come off due to time restraints. And it looks as though we are not just getting the min opera, but a full and seperate album a few months later. That's great. And the fact that Pete says the shows will be more of a production then we've seen previous tours is also good news.
Silly Pete. All these last few years putting Who stuff on the back burner, and now he is racing around trying to complete things and sounds more excited then I have heard him in years. And about what? About The Who! What a wanker. :) |
Do you people consider this a Who album ?, I don't, it's clearly Townshend
solo record with Roger doing some of the vocals. I don't think any album after Moon died is a Who album but it doesn't matter (what they/Pete calls is meaningles to me) to me since I love the music Petes done after that (with "the band" or on his own) and with John gone it's definately Pete solo music project. And not to disappoint anyone but I'm quite certain that everyone here knows excatly what you are going to hear on upcoming tour, the usual and perhaps maybe one or two new tracks trown in. |
yeah I see what you mean. But I don't agree with everything post-87 isn't the Who. Its just the Who, with a different drummer.
Its like Deep Purple. Its really not Deep Purple, since they only have one original member left in the band, yet 3 out of the 5 members were from the famous classic lineup in the early 70s? Or Jethro Tull. Its really not Jethro Tull because there's only one original guy left, and 2 out of the 5 who've been in it numerous decades. But yeah, with Entwistle now gone, its very much Townshend with Roger singing stuff. |
Well even Pete and Roger have said it's not The Who exactly. And plans were to call the album Who 2. Don't know if that is still on.
But I say it is The Who. Because Pete is still there. And to some extent Roger. But mostly Pete. And I disagree about it being a Pete "solo" project. If that's the case, that's all The Who have ever been. We'll have to wait and see what the music sounds like with Roger singing it. And remember The Who were always a musically diverse band. They can do whatever they want. And the last two new Who tracks sounded like The Who to me. I also think we will see a much changed setlist. It may not change any from the start to the end of the tour, nor should it be expected to. But I'd be very surprised if they dragged out the same setlists as they have the last several years. People are expecting more from them. And I do believe Pete wants to move forward with this opportunity, not back. If they perform the "mini opera" in it's entirety that would be enough for me. Which in fact might be exactly what they have in mind. Then they can toss in a few new cuts from the album in September. And yes, all Who albums after Moon died are Who albums. To suggest otherwise isn't fair. And Face Dances is pretty good. EDIT: I call official dibs on a review for one or the other of the two upcoming releases. Let's say the album. Lunch, you Tommy whore, take on Pete's little "mini opera". The Who are new again. It's a good thing, people. :) |
Well like I said, to me they haven't been Who since Moon died and like I said it don't matter to me because I love the records done after that (on his own or not). Face Dances to me is pure 'POP lyric & song' genius.....
I love Pete's solo records too or should I say, I many times prefer certain versions of songs on them, usually more not on record ones (live and such). If anyone here downloaded Petes acoustic "1993-07-02 Mayfair Hotel" show from 'Long Live' tracker, you realise how fantastic songs there is on Psychoderelict. Those versions were infinately better than recorded ones. Also from watching the In The Attic shows it seems that Pete is in tight (total ?) control how things are done on the record. For example claims having ordered Zak to play simple and nothing fancy (at least on "something" on the record) during one ITA show, where he talked about how the recording is going. That would suggest, to me, that it's totally "his" record. |
Yeah, but you know, Pete has always been in charge of the music. And yes, even the playing to some extent. You know Pete's work, so I don't have to tell you he would often times come to the studio with meticulously prepared demos with him playing guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, back up vocals, everything. He had full arrangements. Even of the simplist songs. The band really just had to follow. And they did. Very well. But they stayed within the lines. So creatively I think it's the same as it ever was. Pete always got what he wanted. Until the end when he stopped caring and fighting for it. But good thing, 'cause Roger was being an arse and those three solo albums from Empty Glass to White City are golden.
I wish more on this board were into Pete's solo work. It's cool to run into someone who is. I also have Live At Deep End from '85, the more recent Live At Marysville Academy, and Rough Mix. Oh, and Scoop and Another Scoop. Scoop is one of my faves. I don't have The Iron Man or Psychoderelict. I know I wouldn't enjoy The Iron Man. I'm not sure about the other. IMO his work has been somewhat curious since '85. He has a way of being sort of, um, pretentious. In a good, arty sort of way. But his musical experiments don't always work for me. I do have the "Gold", best of thing from my music service. 34 Pete tracks. I just listened to it a few days ago. Good amount of cuts I haven't heard before. I like most. A few make me raise my brow a bit. |
Hey guys.
Read the last several posts. The Who have a crap load of new stuff coming and no one has anything to say? No posts whatsoever? WTF? Shocked into silence, perhaps? |
I'm actually not as excited for it as you would think. I'm skeptical, honestly, so they will have something to prove to me on the recent release.
John, is there anyway you could send some solo Pete stuff out? |
the 'orrible 'oo.
i have empty glass(townshend) and two sides of the moon(moon) on vinyl. no autographs please. |

John, is there anyway you could send some solo Pete stuff out?
Hopefully all goes well with the new releases, yeah. I'm expecting good work, at least. And yeah, I'm not home right now. But when I get there I will pack up Empty Glass and White City:A Novel. I only have All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes, my personal favorite, on vinyl. And Live At Deep End, as well. And the two Scoops. I do have the recent Live At Marysville Academy. I'll get that out, as well. |

Townshend's Empty Glass is uploaded. Leave email addresses, whoever want's it. :) |
Townshends White City: A Novel, is uploaded and ready for distrubution. :)
I only wish I had All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes to share. Which in my opinion is the centerpeice in this trio. But these two will do just as well. I will also pack up the Marysville Academy gig upon request. |
