I used to be obsessed with that and Master's Apprentice, but lately it's been Orchid for me.

Does anyone have a powertab for The Twilight is my robe or The Apostle in Triumph?

deeps 01-25-2005 01:48 PM

sorry I don't have much time to search through the whole thread but I was wondering which cd you guys would recomend that has as mush of their softer accustic stuff as possible. I've become rather obsessed with it lately and I'm leaving for the mall soon

thx in advance

****ation is all soft, and outside of that Still Life has the most.
what are your thoughts on last track on deliverance- by the pain i see in others? I think its one of the most experimental tracks that i have ever heard, has its moments though.
I had a hard time getting in to this track, because it is, as you stated their most experimental work.
but I really like it now.
although, Mikeal's vocals are a bit unfitting, they just sound, different than normal.
but the lyrics to the song are amazing.
and I love the scary paino music.

as far as the last few minutes of the track go.
I like the parts where Mikeal starts singing for a few seconds, but it's just a few seconds :(
if the outro was filled with more of that singing, it would be awesome, but it's a experimental song.

I remember someone here saying the singer is 16 years old, I thought it was rather weird since they have been releasing albums since 1995 so I checked their official site (www.opeth.com) There it says he is 30!

Someone else also pointed out that he couldn't find Opeth lyrics anywhere not even on darklyrics, but here they are: www.darklyrics.com/o/opeth.html

He was 16 when the band started, maybe that's somehow what he was referring to

Not just Opeth, Amon Amarth, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, In Flames, and of coarse the ultimate Ace of Base.

Cardboard Headgear 01-26-2005 09:34 PM

You forgot ABBA.

dUSK 01-26-2005 09:49 PM

There seems to be a lot of Aussie's in this thread... Hopefully it will be an indication of the number of people at Opeth shows next time they tour here.

Anyway, can someone link me to a site that give a pretty good biography/history of Opeth, I think I'll do a bit of reading. Thanks in advance :)

I'm new to this forum. Does anyone know what The Leper Affinity is about? It seesm to me that Mikael is using leprosy as a metaphor for the fallen human condition. Sin as a disease. And the song is written from the perspective of the disease. Does that make any sense? peace, Chris

it has a great bio written by Mikeal Akerfeldt himself

I like your thoughts, I think you're quite accurate

the2stranger-
Thanks. Some people think its about rape and murder...but I think that's too morbid. So I hope its not about that.... The whole sin/leprosy idea makes sense to me. I understand that Mikael wrote this because he was having thoughts about the evils of humanity. And maybe he's saying that the evils of humanity are like a disease. peace, Chris

I like your interpretation better than my own.
*yoink*

the2stranger 01-27-2005 01:28 PM

ooh, and if you like lyrics on the evil of humanity check the lyrics of meshuggah.

especialy on the 'contradictions collapse' and the 'chaosphere 'album

musicnerd 01-27-2005 01:36 PM

Carboard Headgear...what's your interpretation? I'm interested to know. Do you have any thoughts on the songs from Blackwater Park or Deliverance? peace, Chris

Det_Nosnip 01-27-2005 02:41 PM

Their lyrics aren't so much about the "evil" of humanity as much as the inhumanity of humanity, if that makes any sense. Machines are not by nature evil; they're amoral. Meshuggah seems to be reacting against the dehumanization of humanity resulting from the state of modern society.

Speaking of evil...would anyone on this board characterize Opeth's lyrics as evil? As far as I can tell...they're a lot like poetry. Not to be taken literally, there's always a deeper meaning and sympolism under the surface...am I just stating the obvious? peace, Chris

Det_Nosnip 01-27-2005 03:06 PM

If by "evil," you mean encouraging bad acts, then no.

Evil? I wouldn't say so. They do tend to get quite deep, and quite morbid at times however. I love them, personally.

Grey Incision 01-27-2005 03:21 PM

I would say Opeth's lyrics are quite poetic as you said, you just have to listen to black rose immortal to figure that out. After reading the full bio at www.opeth.com last night, it seems mikael doesn't look to make evil lyrics/music, but he did state that he prefers dark sounding music. (which isn't evil, just dark)

btw, Det-was the woman in your avatar on Ayreon-the human equation album?

That's good to know. I try to steer clear of evil lyrics/music. It's no question that Mikael's lyrics are dark. It seems that he leaves them open to interpretation, but at the same time...I'm sure he knows what they're about since he wrote them. I enjoy these discussions. peace, Chris

Cardboard Headgear 01-27-2005 04:08 PM
btw, Det-was the woman in your avatar on Ayreon-the human equation album?
No, it's neither of the three female singers on that album. Seeing as how it's Det, I'm going to make the WWWWIIIIIILLLLDDDD assumption that it's Anneke Van Giersbergen from The Gathering.

Also, YAY, real conversation in this thread again.

musicnerd 01-27-2005 04:21 PM

Grey Incision--is there a new bio on Opeth.net. I haven't been to that site in a couple months, and I can't access it from work. Do you have thoughts about what The Leper Affinity is about? Some folks seem to think its about rape and murder..and to me, that's pretty evil. I hope my interpretation is accurate. peace, Chris

Iron Man 01-27-2005 04:29 PM

Go vote for Blackwater Park!
