I think the lyrics are coherrent. Without reading a lyrics booklet, i belive it is 'Im not a nationlist, YES I AM! And i dont trust politics, TRUTH!'

Oh well.

NO, I will get Suicidal out there, even if it take ramming them down your throat!

But if someone has already heard them...it isn't really going to expand them to listen to more of them...

Bartender 01-24-2005 06:04 PM

I must say I'm interested to see how zepfan reacts to Celtic Frost.

Celtic Frost - Fainted Eyes
Hmmm...well...where to start...

I suppose the intro. Well, I started it, and I was like "Oh shoot, I got a messed up file, it's skipping." Turns out that was all on purpose, the quick breaks were off beat and seemingly random, but I got ahold of them after a few times.

Not what I expected out of black metal, especially vocally, very clean compared to some stuff I have heard, and while not overly impressive, not what I was dreading.

On second listen this actually flows together pretty well. The instrumentation I felt was not up to the par of other metal I listen to...clearly a different style, but it sounded like power chords almost the whole way through. The solo is not spectacular, but at least it was very interesting, albeit short. Drumming is perhaps my favorite aspect, it is very driving in the music and a key aspect, and it stands out a lot.

Overall, not something I will be listening to a lot, I did not feel wholly interested in the music, but I will be keeping the song because I usually grow into music over a gradual period, but for now this was not huge on me.

Bottom Line: Listenable, but I prefer other music. 6/10

I think if Celtic Frost as thrash with harsh vocals. Calling it black metal just doesn't seem right, sort of like CoB, Kalmah and Norther being called BM.

Permanent Solution 01-24-2005 10:55 PM

Funny, I was thinking Thrash too when I heard it more than BM...meh :p

Dancin' Man 01-25-2005 02:12 PM

Journey - Seperate Ways

So, I have heard like 2 Journey songs in ym entire life and remember not liking it but that was a long time ago.

Begins with a kinda cheesy synth but it's also kinda cool. '80's.

Then the guitars drive in with the drums and the synth changes. Vocals. He sounds a little funny, but not bad. I'm loving the synths. They're lamer than cheesy BM synths but great.

The chorus is great. the lyrics. I love the lyrics. "Someday, love will find you" and it's kind of like a chant. ha. I hate 80's music but I'm digging this.

Later on the drummer has a kind of cool little fill but I have no problem saying none of these players are masters of their trade. The guitar solo is slow and relaxed but sounds good. I suppose that's what counts. There is a fast section but it's not mind numbing. The last half of the song is really killer. It has a whole bunch of little solos and interludes and bridges and then the chorus, one last time. The outro is also pretty cool

I won't look for more but if stumble across it, I'll take it.

If I am not busy later I might do this one...

I'll be doing them all night so long as I can find other people to do it too. I'll probably be whoring this thread for a few hours.

Alabama Thunder Pussy - Bear Baiting

I guess the Southern influences are in there a little bit vocally, but I barely noticed it, what I did notice was all the other aspects of the music. Bass, guitar, drums, all very good. The vocals were definitely the worst part of the music to me, but they weren't bad, except by comparison. Intro starts with a neat riff and starts the song off fun before going into the verse.

A rather long song, not quite enough in there to break it up and keep it fresh all the time. I have a short attention span, so it seemed to drag a bit in places. Overall though, had it been a little shorter it would have been solid throughout imo. Lead guitar had some fun parts, and some parts where it was pretty non-existent, as would be expected, but I still wish there had been more lead work. Outro was very draggy...30 seconds of feedback...gets boring. Would have been neat to go from the slow breakdown back into a speedy section before ending, but oh well.

8/10 I will probably look into some more stuff by them.

The Refreshments - Mekong

Never heard of these guys before.

This song begins with a cool ska sounding guitar riff but the chord progression is better than what I expected.

Then there are the drums which also sound good and a cool lead guitar part. The singer comes in with that slightly punk sneer, nasal voice but it's really thin in that aspect and he hits all the right notes. I like the voice much better than the average punk voice.

The lyrics sound good too. Nothing too deep but good. The guitar solo thing comes back but later there is a very very cool solo that sounds very classic rock-ish. Only problem - It's too short.

This band is tight. No little mishaps or poor choices musically, just straight up goodness. It's also very easy to listen to.

Rwake - Forge

Starts with a neat sound byte, and quickly rushes into the song proper. I loved the sound byte, very comical, and flows nicely into the song. Simple chord riff to begin, but guitars add in harmony. Vocals I found to be a little comical. They work well though, the guy screaming in the background was distracting at first, but added layers once I was used to it.

I will admit, I had no idea what to expect coming into it, having never heard any doom before. I was not disappointed by it, good lead guitar work in the song, nice riffs. Not necessarily solos, but it all fit well in context, and harmonizes well with the band as a whole. Drums were relatively simple for metal, but, it fit well enough, so no complaints. Interesting outro with work on intervals, sounds very neat, and then completes the sound clip in ending, very cool. It had to grow on me, but once it did I liked it. I was originally thinking 7, but by the end, this would be either an 8 or 9 most definitely, but I'll go with 8, because it still could improve vocally at the least, but no problems with variety for sure.

MeWithoutYou - Torches Together

Never heard them

Begins with some feedback and what sounds like a radio in the back. The drums and another guitar with a real riff. Pretty cool.

There's a drum beat that you think is going to lead into a heavier section but goes back and the vocals join. They're kind of funny sounding. He's sort of yelling sort of singing. Preaching I suppose. This same thing goes on with thebeat that you think is going to make the song explode but doesn't All the parts are very cool I must say.

Then the beat comes back and it does explode. It's very melodic. The lyrics seem kind of pseudo intelligent. These guys remind me of ATD-I but are definitely different.

The song just sort of ends. It seems to have two very distinct sections. It was good but not amazing.

Naglfar - Brimstone Gate

This, I like. Catchy and grabby intro. Fantastic musically, and vocals that I have become adapted to. Strikes me as similar to Dimmu Borgir, as I expected. Driving double bass and nice guitar riffs, this song has it all for me. I like the vocals a lot actually as far as their style goes. Never stuck on any one note instrumentally either, seems to change roots every quarter note, very impressive. Could definitely be longer. Nice little instrumental breaks are my favorite part. Fade out endings are a little anti-climactic for me, but otherwise a solid piece, I wish there had been a better ending so I could give it a 10.
