Definitely. The first time I heard Weakness I found it incredibly depressing, something I don't need more of right now. I love Ending Credits. It's amazing how a simple I-IV-V progression with a basic blues solo can sound so fresh.
Ending Credits also has the ability to make me cry on occasion. And very few songs can do that.

eighty d 09-03-2006 07:18 PM
What I like about Weakness is that it is by far the heaviest track on the Damnation record yet it's also the most quiet. There's a depth to it, a kind of quiet desperation.
I'd disagree. I find Closure to be a very heavy song.
I'd disagree. I find Closure to be a very heavy song.
As soon as the whole band comes in and Lopez starts playing the bongos I think it gets fairly heavy for that music style. It's also an incredible song.

God, I love Damnation. :)

TojesDolan 09-03-2006 07:33 PM

oh oh

My favorite riff is the first one in "The Apostle in Triumph", the part that is in the newly-produced albums, the Eminor progression... Kinda like "Closure", where there's an instrumental growth...

Good times.

Thor 09-03-2006 07:34 PM

My favorite Opeth riff right now is the Master's Apprentices riff at 2:25. Sooooo heavy!

Jude 09-03-2006 07:36 PM

I don't really like the heavy parts of Master's Apprentices, but the acoustic part in the middle is one of my favorite Opeth soft passages ever.

Thor 09-03-2006 07:37 PM

You mean the parts with Akerfeldt's and Wilson's vocal harmonies? If so, then I agree. Those parts are ace. Master's Apprentices is one of the band's best songs to date.

Captain Quentin 09-04-2006 03:28 AM
The part where Steven Wilson sings is the single part in any Opeth song that got me into the band. It's so incredible...I can't even describe it.
oh my god.....yes me too, such an amazingly catchy, beautiful part. The riff is an absolute eargasm too

Clunge 09-04-2006 03:44 AM

Ooohh, quick question, what is the definitve genre that covers Opeth?

Miek 09-04-2006 03:48 AM

I would say Progressive Death, but I'm not good with genres.

ironmanx 09-04-2006 04:33 AM

If you were to sum up why Opeth is an amazing band how would you explain it in a short paragraph?

Kronos 09-04-2006 07:36 AM

I'd have to disagree with you on that one, Ted. I'd jointly propose Closure and To Rid The Disease as heaviest (meaning-wise) on that album

The words to both are quite chilling

I think it's quite a representative Opeth song. It has almost everything Opeth is about.

Shattered_Future 09-04-2006 01:51 PM

It's amazing how freaking awesome 4 powerchords can be.

TojesDolan 09-04-2006 02:25 PM
It's amazing how freaking awesome 4 powerchords can be.
You can't beat Weakness' three chords (mellotron) and scarse 6-7 notes with guitar.

That's as minimalist and beatiful it can get.

Closure would be 2nd for me, but I'd say that it's "darker" than it is "heavy." To Rid the Disease is quite haunting, but overall as a composition I wouldn't call it as "heavy" as Weakness. It has one of the album's biggest "upper" moments, with the jam/solo towards the end.

It's really different from what they usually do with their technical riffing, so I gotta give it some respect for that. I still like so many of the other songs on the album more, though.

Ending Credits ftw. :)

Crysiss 09-04-2006 10:08 PM

When they play Weakness on the DVD, does anyone hear someone yell "This song sucks"?

Ive asked alot, but not answer.

pate 09-04-2006 10:55 PM

I'm not sure. The only screaming during the Damnation set that I can think of is the horrid screech at the beginning of Hope Leaves, my favorite Damnation song :(

eighty d 09-04-2006 11:21 PM

Yah that screech is aweful.

My favorite crowd reaction part of Lamentations is just before To Rid The Disease. Mike says something to the effect of "Just because this song is slightly mellow doesn't mean it's less evil, does it?" Most of the crowd just kinda says no, but after the initial reaction dies down you can just hear a guy growl "No it doesn't!"

Minimalist, but not beautiful.

Weakness is as close to genuinely hating an Opeth song as I've ever gotten.

Insipid2000 09-05-2006 03:21 AM

Is It to mellow for you?

Just watched that. That's pretty funny, and I never caught that part before. Probably because that's my least favorite Damnation song. :)

I also like when they play "A Fair Judgement" and no one else can figure it else but this one other guy who just lets out this viking scream that sounds right out of an Amon Amarth album. I always laugh when I hear it.

TojesDolan 09-05-2006 09:25 AM

lol

Some fanatics...

I wouldn't mind listening to any live Opeth.

On To Rid The Disease, I find it to be a boring song. Then again, it's the only Damnation song I don't play in the guitar, so lol to tojeam.

I don't know, I think it's pretty rubbish. :( Other stuff that album is far more beautiful, and other albums. I've heard way more beautiful minimalistic music too. It's okay as an album closer though, it sits quite well in context.

TojesDolan 09-05-2006 09:36 AM

Oh well.

At least I like it.

132WalrusesInMexico 09-05-2006 03:45 PM

I'm new to Opeth, but I really enjoy what I've heard. I own Ghost Reveries and Damnation, what should be the next Opeth album I get? Personally, I'm not a big fan of the cookie monster vocals, but I can ignore it. I love Mikael Akerfeldt's singing voice.

Tyr 09-05-2006 03:47 PM

Blackwater Park or Still Life are my recommendations.

Blackwater Park, me would say.

Yeah, definitely. That was my first Opeth album.

What screech are you guys talking about? I don't hear one.

eighty d 09-05-2006 04:41 PM

Exactly with the first word Mike sings, someone in the audience screams. Unless there's two different versions, one with that edited out, I don't know how you could miss it.

Yeah, so did I.

Shattered_Future 09-05-2006 05:14 PM

On the DVD, there's this extremely womanly sounding man screeching.

That's a rather hilarious moment. That DVD is as funny as it is incredible. Opeth concerts just look like FUN to be at. Sadly, I missed them the last time they played in my state. And it was on my birthday, too.

It's on the song Weakness right?

I'll be sure to check it out on youtube when I go home.

Ok, just trying to help you out. :thumb:

Anyone else think that To Rid the Disease is one of the weakest songs on Damnation?
