Radial.

Well, I meant to type radical, but Radial was just so awesome I had to keep it there.

Speaking of items arriving - my Mexi-Jazz (the project bass) arrived on Monday afternoon after waiting about a month. I put it together, set it up and played it and I'm already impressed. Also getting my Winnipeg Jets hat shipped up today so that's gonna be awesome. So I guess it's safe to say I'm quite stoked here as well.

Also, I got the EP, Gaslight. This of course caused me to unearth a major conflict - can two Matts function properly on one message board? Or will the Earth divide by zero and cause the rapture or something.

I dug a good bit of it, although I have to admit I found it pretty hard to sit through two eight-plus minute songs back to back and wished they would've been more spread out. (which makes me feel like a total dick, being as I write tons of songs that are really long as well, hahah.) Also would've liked to hear more drumming on Icarus Complex... but Juju Fever kicked my ass a whole bunch.

so yeah.

EDIT: had to edit spatula back to dick - can't stand curse filters.

gaslight 07-21-2010 09:57 AM

Radial indeed. Glad you liked it :).

The Mono case is fantastic, a bit light on pockets compared to what I like (the amount of pockets I like is excessive anyhow) but the case itself is dynamite.

FlamingCouch 07-21-2010 10:03 AM

mm. The project Jazz came with a gigbag but I gave it to a friend of mine, being that I have a hardshell case that I used to house my Spector in. I'll keep that for the Jazz and just sell the Spector by its lonely lonely self. :upset:

I feel like a dink selling that thing, it brought me several good years of playing and is my only unit past 21 frets. but I guess better to put it in the hands of someone who'll use it, eh?

Oh while I'm sounding off the gig Saturday was a blast - we filled our whole set, start to finish seven songs. Six original, one cover. Our drummer bowed out two days before the gig and the guy we replaced him with had only two practices with us and absolutely tore it up, he was awesome. When we started there were two people there - the sound guy and the event co-ordinator. By the end of our set there were twenty or thirty people there, so I was pretty happy about that. Not to mention it started raining midway through our last song, which is the heaviest proggiest one, so that was a surreal spiritual experience. I just turn around and Jordan is beating the kit to death and water is flying everywhere... awesome.

We're actually probably going to record as well now, so that pumps me up huge. one tune about half-done so far.

gaslight 07-21-2010 10:07 AM

Nice one man, haven't had a really good gig in a while here.

FlamingCouch 07-21-2010 11:47 AM

I hear that - I've rarely had a truly good gig, one I could be excited about. Playing in my band back in high-school was usually fun, although not always, and playing by myself here at open mics was almost always totally crap. Plus if I'm writing my own music I'm more often than not confined to a guitar and not bass, which I prefer to play anyway... but hey. Maybe I'll start some crazy solo bass junk when I finish the project bass, or maybe I'll take over bass duties in my project some time.

Either way, as far as playing live goes now I'm pretty much going to do it on my own terms, the way I want to. Should make it a lot more interesting.

BenJammin 07-21-2010 12:07 PM

Every gig we play is good. Even when we fuck up, or have a small turn out, or a play a crappy venue, we just make the most of it.

fatbandit 07-21-2010 12:16 PM

Agree with Ben. I miss gigging soooo much :(

Me and a friend are thinking of starting a band without a drummer, and programming the drums. We're thinking of getting a powerful full range PA cab and a 2kW power amp to run our drums through live, and also feeding a signal to the desk as well. Could be epic, or megafails.

Hey man i might be gigging down there soon :)

We shall see in the near future!

gaslight 07-22-2010 09:08 AM

Are you still planning to move here?

fatbandit 07-22-2010 10:57 AM

Watched Inception today. It was pretty rockin'. It was made out to be a lot more confusing than it actually was though.

FunkMetalBass 07-22-2010 12:24 PM

If you can follow Primer and Memento, no movie will ever feel confusing.
Are you still planning to move here?
Planning isn't the right word, but if it happens it happens. I'm fairly open to the idea realistically but I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket.

gaslight 07-23-2010 10:58 AM

I wouldn't recommend it honestly there's **** all here worth moving for unless you live somewhere really bad.

FunkMetalBass 07-23-2010 11:51 AM

I'm about to order a sweet set of diamond needle files and feeler gauges today. One step closer to doing some awesome fretwork. Eventually I'll get ballsy enough to try a fret level and re-crown.

gaslight 07-23-2010 11:55 AM

Sweet dude, I love gadgets.

Might be coming into much more money than usual this fortnight (fingers crossed!) if I do, I'll definitely splurge on some new gadgets for myself.

FunkMetalBass 07-23-2010 12:50 PM

Ballin', man. What kind of gadgets are you looking at?

fatbandit 07-23-2010 03:36 PM

Okay, so to replace a drummer onstage... How's this sound? Laptop feeding a pre-mixed feed into a transparent preamp (if that's needed? I need to check up on the output levels you get from audio interfaces), through to a rack crossover and then into a stereo poweramp feeding a Bill Fitzmaurice DR250 top and 22" wide Tuba 30, all in one stack?

Got my eyes on a few things, replacing the hardware on one of my basses with Schaller parts, getting new straps, Aguilar TLC Compressor, maybe another new gig bag.

It'll probably do the job, you get the advantage of it having metronomic time, but you lose any spontaneity that a real drummer might bring to it. Overall, it's better than not gigging because of the lack of a drummer.

Of course the real advantage is that compared to the real drummer it won't drink very much, and it's one less way to split the money.
I wouldn't recommend it honestly there's **** all here worth moving for unless you live somewhere really bad.
Maybe Melbourne. Eh, who knows. I don't want to move anywhere unless it'll be worth it.

gaslight 07-24-2010 06:50 AM

Have a holiday there first at any rate. It's simply not worth moving to any city in Australia for the music scene unless you're a huge country player, then you can head to Tamworth.

funkyhoney 07-24-2010 06:53 AM

Oh yeah I agree, we're definitely touring first down south. But I meant on a personal note on my behalf; definitely not moving anywhere without good reason.

gaslight 07-24-2010 06:55 AM

Oh yeah, definitely would want a huge motivator.

funkyhoney 07-24-2010 07:01 AM

Fo sho. I kinda like this city surprisingly, everyone else seems to hate it for some reason. I mean there isn't as much culture etc. here, but yeah, I'm back at uni now and looking for a new job, so definitely not putting all the eggs in one basket.
