Yes, Irish Gaelic. I need a resource for the language. I'm going to be learning Gaelic after I finish up with German. It'd make more sense to learn Saxon or Frisian in between, I guess, but I don't feel like spraining my tongue.

Announcement at top of page.
why are you saying this?
Most of us learn to write in primary school. Journalists are the only ones who make a degree and career out of it. I don't really respect people who do arts, business and journalism as much as the sciences, or even philosophy or politics.

It's a bit of a joke though, so don't get offended.

Whoah? When did this happen and why was the forum down yesterday?
It's explained in the site forum.

By arts, do you mean actual drawing/painting/etc arts, or just anything that you come out of with a BA instead of a BSc?

BA. I respect artists.

By the way, Walk The Line is such a fantastic movie.

Stormrider 02-23-2006 05:58 PM

Sorry but whats BA ? BSc ?

Illmatic 02-23-2006 06:01 PM

BA = Bachelor's in Arts
BSc = Bachelor's in Science

Riv has nerd angst (I think) and is trying to cut down those of us going after a BA...

Although I'm gunning higher than a BA, but still

Okay. Just because the distinction between a BA and a BSc isn't always that clear.

It's more of a joke, really.

I'm not really that angsty. I know that besides from a lucky few, I'll be earning more and probably be happier than a large number of other students.

It's just their timetable is so much easier than mine. :(

And on my campus they're all old "mature age students" who hog every facility and contaminate the refectory with their foul "study groups".

blueyxd 02-23-2006 06:05 PM

Hey Bartender, I saw Hot Rubber Glove last night. They didn't play Mud Elephant, they played mostly upbeat stuff and I only knew 2 of the songs.

The sound at the venue wasn't good, but the band were still very energetic and fun.

Edit:
In the Science toliets at uni, above one of the toilet roll holders it says "Arts Degrees - please take one"

What exactly will you be doing for a living?

Riva 02-23-2006 06:07 PM

Metallurgy, GIS/Hydrogeology or I can fall back on Biological Chemistry.

Illmatic 02-23-2006 06:10 PM

I can honestly say I have no idea what you just said.

I do know that the main reason one of my friends dropped out of med school was because he hated bio chemistry so much.

Bartender 02-23-2006 06:13 PM

He's doing complicated sciencey things which we poor arts students will regret not trying harder at in years to come.

Sounds good. Sometimes I think it's cruel of you to introduce me to so many artists from your corner.

Riva 02-23-2006 06:15 PM

Oh calm down you guys. Christ.

Let's talk about Walk The Line instead.

blueyxd 02-23-2006 06:19 PM

GIS is basically computer mapping, there are a ton of jobs where GIS would be useful. Hydrogeology is exactly as it sounds.. sciency.
Sounds good. Sometimes I think it's cruel of you to introduce me to so many antipodean artists.
Yeah, I know. Mr Country-that-has Anathema, Miocene, Earthone9, Mogwai & Goldie Lookin' Chain (Scotland & Wales are close enough).

I'll surely visit UK and Europe one day...
Maybe Australia hasn't reached that part of history yet...
As far as I'm concerned, Aussies are still Kylie Minogue-fawning, Midnight Oil-listening, Foster's-chugging Crocodile Dundee wannabes who wear those goofy safari hats with one side pointed up :-*
He's doing complicated sciencey things which we poor arts students will regret not trying harder at in years to come
When I'm a lawyer/senator/criminologist (haven't picked which one!) starving in the streets years down the road, I will surely regret this.
Let's talk about Walk The Line instead.
You guys are just seeing that?

I have no intention of seeing it (I don't care much for Johnny Cash, Joaquin Phoenix, or that miserable cocktease Reese Witherspoon)

Bartender 02-23-2006 06:25 PM
Oh calm down you guys. Christ.

Hey, I'm fine with you lording your superior degree over me. I make no attempt to defend my subject, as you know.

Okay, point taken. Though, out of all those and many more, I've only seen Miocene. And it was back when all they had was Refining the Theory. And the support band didn't turn up, and the bassist's amp lead was faulty, and the stage was about three inches high and eight feet square. Good show, though. Vocalist even managed a stage dive, of sorts.

I didn't know you liked ET9, though. That's pleasing.
Let's talk about Walk The Line instead.
I'm not a fan of Johnny Cash, but this movie would of been cool if it didn't have Reese Witherspoon in it. She's phony. On another note, I got a chance to watch North Country last night, and it's definitely one of the most powerful and emotional movies I've ever seen. Great flick.

Somebody gave me the Omega cd because they thought I'd like it. I do.

I just had some goji berries, apparently it will be like having 20 coffees. My initial reaction is slight nausea...

The only thing that bothered me was her voice. It was nothing like June Carter.

Walk the Line was great, one of my favorites of last year.

Shattered_Future 02-23-2006 07:17 PM

I thought Walk The Line was extremely pedestrian...

Sure, it was a good movie, but it's basically like all others of its ilk:

Rise to fame, drugs, downward spiral, eventually hit rock bottom, reform, start playing again. It gets predictable.

jpj 02-23-2006 07:18 PM

Yea, but Johnny Cash was such a hardass. I'd put my money on him against Chuck Norris.

/beats a dead horse.

GenuineImitation 02-23-2006 07:19 PM

I havent seen it yet. My mom went tonight, but left me home because she said someone needed to watch my brother.

Shattered_Future 02-23-2006 08:47 PM

We got one of those "For Your Consideration" copies from my godmother, who's husband works with CBS or something. He gets all those movies they send to you for Oscar nomination and whatnot.

New review: The Damnation Game by Symphony X. Great, great cd.

Did anyone else see Avril Lavigne sing tonight for the Olympics?

Kaiwaz 02-23-2006 10:09 PM

Did she fall? If so, I missed it.

Toaster 02-23-2006 10:12 PM

It basically affirmed every doubt I've had about her ability.

Shattered_Future 02-23-2006 10:13 PM

So, she did bad?

Kaiwaz 02-23-2006 10:27 PM

I hope she was humiliated in front of millions.

Moses 02-23-2006 10:30 PM

I could really care less.

Speaking of pop singers Kelly Clarkson is great, if you ignore her overplayed singles.

Shattered_Future 02-23-2006 10:39 PM

Her and the black chick (Fantasia?) were the only 2 good ones who ever came out of the competition...
