i think they were. from interviews of late the call it a dark period and that they were pissed off at the trendiness of death metal.
i also think being friends with varg vikernes and euronymous meant that they at least voiced seriousness.

maybe when they did "norwegian aryan black metal" and it all backfired along with black metal itself they folded and said "uh its all a joke!"
