Hey gearheads, I need some recommendations for music listening headphones. Budget is preferably under $500, though I am happy to browse links of more expensive ones to marvel at them.
And here I was thinking spending $50 was spoiling myself.

gaslight 07-17-2010 10:56 AM

It costs $50 just to enter a music store. These aren't like, out and about with MP3 player headphones, I want real high quality ones for enjoying music sat on my arse at home, transcribing and so on. Honestly I'd be pissed as if I had to go over $200.

Go download my old band's EP if you've got the time buddy.

BenJammin 07-17-2010 02:40 PM

Played a show last night at some hole-in-the-wall venue above a pizzeria. Virutally no one there, since they had us start at 8:30, and the venue doesn't advertise for itself, so no one even knew it existed. Fun time, though. We rocked out pretty hard.

Do you want HIFI or reveal every nuance of the music headphones?

fatbandit 07-17-2010 03:52 PM

I don't know much about headphones but I'm curious about something else...

Casual - what are your top 5 albums of all time? GOGOGOGO

fatbandit 07-17-2010 03:53 PM

In other news, I saw a car today with the license plate 'R44EYL'. I chuckled :/

Gattsu347 07-17-2010 03:55 PM

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Primus - Frizzle Fry
Andrew W.K. - I Get Wet

Hey you guys want to hear my new song?

fatbandit 07-17-2010 04:13 PM

I think today mine are probably...

Venetian Snares - Rossz Csillag Alatt Született
Circle Takes The Square - As The Roots Undo
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
Alien Ant Farm - ANThology
Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence

Some that were just edged out were Morning View by Incubus, Showbiz by Muse and perhaps Black Market Music by Placebo. But they don't count, seeing as they didn't make the top 5 :p

Gattsu347 07-17-2010 04:19 PM

ANThology yesssssss

i kind of forgot about System of a Down self titled and toxcity

Gattsu347 07-17-2010 04:22 PM

Dude layback on the limiting man. I'm not just saying this cause it seems to be trendy atm to say. But **** was distorting.
Do you want HIFI or reveal every nuance of the music headphones?
Those both sound like they should be the same thing?

But in short, yeah, I want to be able to hear every little thing in the music.

Convectuoso 07-18-2010 12:11 AM

Well HIFI usually refers to things that sound 'pleasing'. Tailored to specific bands that sound 'nice'.

Revealing headphones are usually openback mixing headphones. Sennheiser HD650 for example.

Sennheiser HD595 might be the go. Look em up.

gaslight 07-18-2010 12:17 AM

Man that is flagrant false advertising haha. High Fidelity should mean exactly that, not Hi We're Changing ****.

I will look at these cans you speak of, price range?

Convectuoso 07-18-2010 12:52 AM

 it's all about mixing vs listening pleasure.

There are some amaaaaazzing sounding 'HIFI' systems. They are high fidelity. But they're tailored to sound nice, not to have mixes translate to other systems like studio headphones.

I just found some for 310 NZD (which is very reasonable for the quality. The HD650's are like 600-800 (YMMV), and they're considered the top dogs of the Sennheiser range.) on Trademe, brand new as well. That's 253.414 AUD according to xe.com. Which I think is totally in your range. Be careful though, they're open back. So it won't block out a lot of background noise. But if it's just at home I honestly would highly recommend them.

But go test them. Take and ipod or some cds whatevs that you love/think sound good then listen to them on those headphones. Then decide if you like how they sound. I'm just going of specs and opinions of my friends. But they look like the business based on your needs.

gaslight 07-18-2010 12:57 AM

The HD650's sound pretty tight.

The high-end audio device store in Sydney seems to agree with you, I can get them there for $719.

Pretty expensive but I'm happy to pay it if they're the best thing available and will stay excellent forever.

If I save $50 a week I can have them in about 4 months. There's no rush on it really they'd be for enjoyment in the house only, mainly for transcribing and other detailed listening. Not that you need fancy headphones for that but they're a tax deduction anyway so, why not.

Convectuoso 07-18-2010 02:13 AM

Yeah a lot of people swear by them. They're very nice.

But totally listen to them before hand obviously.

The 595's aren't budget, just probably their lowish to mid range open backs. But if you're willing to drop the cash then the 650's are slick.

gaslight 07-18-2010 02:18 AM

There's a lot of other more important things demanding my money at the moment but I'll start a running savings fund for them and snap them up by the end of the year hopefully.

karmapavementplan 07-18-2010 04:37 AM

stupid myspace. We're on there, http://www.myspace.com/sugarmousenr2, but when you type "sugarmouse" into search for music we don't show up. Any ideas?

gaslight 07-18-2010 07:40 AM

If you only very recently made the page you might need to wait a few days I think.

karmapavementplan 07-18-2010 10:04 AM

it's been like a month.

gaslight 07-18-2010 10:10 AM

Hmm, perhaps need to meet a minimum number of friends and/or plays before it puts you in the search thingy.

karmapavementplan 07-18-2010 11:43 AM

well that's useful for fledgling bands trying to get people to find their myspace.
Dude layback on the limiting man. I'm not just saying this cause it seems to be trendy atm to say. But **** was distorting.
yea this is basically my test with mondo compression and soft clipping. snare distortion yadda yadda.

Mr. Pickle 07-18-2010 04:43 PM
