On the "learning guitar" topic, I started learning Necrophagist's Foul Body Autopsy today. It's got some pretty tricky fingering.

Forlorn Hope 01-31-2006 08:54 PM

I've been learning Cemetary Gates by Pantera....except the solos...I'm not a good soloist yet.

IheartSP 01-31-2006 08:56 PM

I learned that song about 6 months back, including solo. I was just playing it 2 seconds ago too what a coincidence.

The Necrophagist song? Or do you mean Cemetary Gates?

IheartSP 01-31-2006 09:03 PM

Cemetary Gates

I couldn't learn Necrophagist, my only tuning choices are D and E.

FBA is a cool song, I know the pre-verse riff, very technical stuff.
The Epitaph song is probably my fav tho.

What tuning does Necrophagist play in?

How hard are their riffs?

Toaster 01-31-2006 09:56 PM

Necrophagist play in standard tuning, down a whole step. A lot of their riffs are tough to play, but once you get your head around some of the patterns it's not complicated stuff. The main problem for me is the stretches; I have small hands.

I can stretch maybe 3 frets on cords comtorably..

5
2

On single notes, maybe 5...

I can do that position shift in Sixpounder from the fith fret to the tenth pretty damn and crisp.

Britton 01-31-2006 10:24 PM

I have a huge reach right now I'm able to span 6 frets (1 to 6) fairly comftorbly

Shadows 01-31-2006 11:11 PM

Is that huge? I have really small hands, but I can span six frets pretty easily.

Britton 01-31-2006 11:14 PM

None of my other friends can do it.

Everyone says I should play Bass more then Guitar...cause my hands are so big

I'm Charming 01-31-2006 11:33 PM

I have pretty big hands... idk... I should prolly check later and see if I remembed right.

Apocalyptic Raids 01-31-2006 11:51 PM

I can do 1-5, that's it.

IheartSP 02-01-2006 05:20 AM

Does Necrophagist really tune to D? It sounded lower than that, oh well I never woulda guess Dimmu tunes to E but I was wrong there too.

blue3 02-01-2006 05:27 AM

Same, I can only do 1-5. And I have no idea about the tunings.

Squirrel 02-01-2006 05:27 AM

Yep, they play in D standard.

However the next stuff will probably/theoretically be - A D G C F A d

repcak 02-01-2006 05:30 AM

i can play the whole intro from lake bodom and the first riff :D

btw. for stretching exercises and picking i recommend the john petruccis rock discipline dvc/tabs. i just started to learn it... it helps me a lot improving my technique!

MRDuCran 02-01-2006 07:30 AM

I can do 12 to 24 but the frets are smaller up there.

kurrpt 02-01-2006 07:39 AM

i got the JP DVD ripped on my IPOD video...

watching that video just makes ya feel like sh!t

Toaster 02-01-2006 07:53 AM

1 to 6 isn't that big of a stretch. I just have trouble doing things like 9-12-15-12-9 legato on the G string.
Yep, they play in D standard.

Are they going to seven-strings? I haven't read that anywhere.

Apocalyptic Raids 02-01-2006 08:44 AM

Did you request a name change?

MRDuCran 02-01-2006 09:20 AM

Being able to stretch far doesn't mean sh!t anyway, it's what you can do with it that matters. If you can play string skipped, augmented arpeggios as fast and clean as Shawn Lane could, then you can boast.

kurrpt 02-01-2006 09:30 AM

agreed 100%

Toaster 02-01-2006 10:38 AM

Being able to stretch far makes a difference, let's not pretend otherwise. From a technical standpoint, players with longer fingers can play things that players with smaller fingers could never play. I never said that having long fingers makes you a great guitar player, it certainly doesn't. It does enable you to play patterns that involve long stretches more easily.

kurrpt 02-01-2006 10:40 AM

you could just transcribe long stretches to a different part of the guitar

Toaster 02-01-2006 10:55 AM

----------------------- If someone had trouble making this stretch..
4--7--4--8--4--7--4--8
repeat

---------3-----------3 They'd have to move it here, which would be
4--7--4-----4--7--4-- impossible to play at high speeds.
repeat

And what about chords? You can't play a chord on another part of the guitar without changing at least one note.

Britton 02-01-2006 11:57 AM

Agreed 100%

Does anyone want to take a stab at that finger picking thing? I could really use some help.

Lil’ Bloodred Ridin’ Hood 02-01-2006 12:10 PM

YEY!!! I finally got my name changed!!!!!!
