Someone asked for people's top 5 favorite bands besides Opeth to get an idea of everyone's taste. It's the first time I've seen this thread go off topic.
|
So how long is Lopez going to be out?
|
:chug: Those guys are awesome...don't get nearly as much attention as they deserve. Eppur Si Muove = :amaze: .
Ah, Haggard. They are great. Very singular, indeed. |

Big Opeth fan. They've been a huge influence on my musical perception. And from browsing the past few pages, I'll go ahead and post my top five outside if Opeth. Mastodon Metallica All Shall Perish Hendrix Emperor Five isn't enough... |
Hey there, stick around will you :).
So how long is Lopez going to be out?
No word on it, but it's already been a while so I would assume it would be a while longer. |
OMG lists!
I don't think I'm that fond of other bands... Opeth is MY life. :( Nonetheless: Death King Crimson Dream Theater (And all it's variables) Iron Maiden And I don't know... Probably In flames. Those are the ones in the top of my mind at the moment. I started watching the DVD again. I love it so bad. |

He does live, but I'm sure Lopez will still be able to do studio stuff.

Ya I meant for their show, I'm sure the disease isn't serious enough that Lopez would have to quit that band. |
Axenrot just looks out of place if only because he has blonde hair. It clashes with the rest of the band :p.

Heh yeah... I wonder what a studio album with him playing would sound like... don't say "O IT WUD SUCK CUZ MARTIN ROX", I'm actually wandering what good death metal beats would sound like in the harsher sound of Opeth... |
I don't want to hear blast beats, I know that. I think it would be similar to the style on the first 2 albums.
|
I like blast beats... :p
|
Me too, but not in Opeth.
|
Why not take there extreme part farther? Theres always room for more progression in Opeth.
|

He's a tr00 swede. |

But it's so cliche at this point. It wouldn't progress the music in any way imo. |

Opeth never put any limits on themselves in the past... |

How is it cliche? |

Not to mention I would take Martin Lopez's incredible finesse and subtle style over any in-your-face, play-as-fast-and-loud-as-I-can metal drummer any day. He is to drums what Mikael Akerfeldt is to songwriting in metal. |

Well yeah, but whats wrong with a truly aggressive beat for the more brutal sections? |
Either that or it will sound a lot more technical, and very blasty.
My parents think blast beats is music from the devil. :( They don't mind Harvest though. Harvest gets everyone. |

Far as I can tell Opeth have had some insanely brutal beats...brutaller than anything I've heard. Then again I don't listen to anything heavier than Opeth so I wouldn't know, but they sound plenty aggressive to me at times like Wreath or Deliverance. |
I'd love to hear some more stuff like the middle part of Under the Weeping Moon.
|
I was just thinking of those 2 songs... but imagine an even more death metal like beat over the first few min in Wreath? I think if used correctly, blast beats could sound nice in Opeth. But it won't ever happen, so forget it...
|
How is it cliche?
Because every heavy band with death metal influences uses them. I see no reason to start using them as Lopez's style crushes any blastbeat in Opeth songs. I just don't want to see them in my favorite band, I love the drumming as it is. Maybe VERY light use of them, but nothing more. |
Opeth really uses no techniques that metal bands haven't used 3627505 times beforehand. If anything blast beats would be very fresh sounding, since they've never used them before. I can picture them making Deliverance even better.

Even they're heavy stuff is very melodic. I just don't see how blast beats would accentuate their melodies. |
Listen to the intros of Wreath and Deliverance. Does that sound particularly melodic? I'm not saying use them whenever possible, but if they used them during especially brutal times like those two intros, it would sound great.

Yeah, I agree. Just something new that could work well for them, thats all. |
