I can't believe Flynn likes something on GR more than me, but I hate Beneath the Mire and I'm not a real big fan of R/HF either :amaze:

Thor 03-16-2006 06:59 AM
I do need an Opeth shirt. I'm surprised I already Have an Age of Silence shirt but not an Opeth.
You should get the Damnation shirt, just because I've never seen anyone else have it. Not to mention that Damnation is incredible too...

Stormrider 03-16-2006 10:08 AM
You can download free recording programs online. I think there's a legitimately free one called Audacity, but I got my copy of Cool Edit Pro free... Then either get a cheap mic or a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to record via line in and you're good to go.

I suggest Closure and Benighted for fun acoustic songs.
Yeah, I've heard those programs. Ijust never got around to getting any of themn yet...

I think I have not heard Closure yet :(

Deth 03-16-2006 10:36 AM

Closure's amazing, you're missing out.
Closure's amazing, you're missing out.
I adore Closure. I need to get round to learning it on guitar. It's probably my favourite on Damnation.

Toaster 03-16-2006 12:08 PM

The second last riff (the one with the bend) is really fun to play. It's easily my favourite on Damnation.

Hmm, I checked in my songlist, and I only have a live version. I don't remember it though :( :upset:

Anyone would be so kind and send it to me plz :)

Hit me up on AIM for the whole album (MisterGroovy1023)

I love Closure live because while usually Opeth just play the songs exactly as they are on the album, they throw in that crazy jam part on this song.

Stormrider 03-16-2006 04:04 PM

Hmm, me will listen to it now.

NP Closure

My mistake, this isnt live. Atleast, it doesnt sound like it.

Ah what the hell...i dont have a full version. It stops at 5 minuutes 15 seconds..just cuts off

You're not the first to be owned by the end of Closure.

It's supposed to end suddenly like that. On the album the next song starts right after it and it's disorienting because it's in a different key, tempo, guitar tone etc.

Sorry about that my boy. Theres no I in there. I was trying to say that its a fun song to play lmao. sorry for confusion heh
OIC hehe sorry for the misunderstanding. :D:D

And yes regarding Beneath the mire I think it's a great song. And no one believed me. :(

Thank God we have our local Flynn for support.

It owned me too. I was like gwaaah??? Hope Leaves is a great song though. Damnation is a great album.

i am the robots 03-16-2006 04:24 PM

Yeah, Closure does that to you.

Det_Nosnip 03-16-2006 04:25 PM

I love the Lamentations version of the Closure ending. Although Martin's multi-layered percussion was pretty stellar, I loved the atmosphere that they created live. God, they need to get that guy back behind the set.

Shadows 03-16-2006 04:26 PM

I don't really like Closure. :(

It's one of the three GR songs I like more then average. :thumb:

TojesDolan 03-16-2006 05:28 PM

Yeah Dunkelheit ftw as well. :chug:

Anyways... on Lamentations, my favorite drumming has got to be the extra parts for "In my time of need", much more potent, I suppose, and the ending for Closure. The extra minutes really make the song feel complete, unlike the studio version.

Blanka Flip 03-16-2006 05:59 PM
Yeah, it really shows that Mikael is one of the most talented vocalists to ever come out of the metal scene.
Thor, I keep running into you around the forums, and it always seems that we are on the same page... Interesting.

To catch up on the last couple things, Serinity Painted Death is an amazing song... In my music theory class, I did a report on Still Life and played it before the class... It was great. Most of the people that were in there listen mostly to Frank Sinatra, Classical, and some varied pop music... SPD scared the shit out of all of them...

And yes, I think wreath is one of the evilest sounding Opeth songs created, thanks to Mike's amazing vocal work... The song itself is a complete journey, which is another reason I like it so much. It's like a story in itself...

But I think I've come to realize that, though I can never pick what album is my favorite, I think I've figured that Deliverance is my favorite Opeth song... I can't explain why, the song just announces itself to me with every listen. It was also one of the first Opeth songs I was able to learn on bass...

Oh and when Det Nosip said, "I love the Lamentations version of the Closure ending. Although Martin's multi-layered percussion was pretty stellar, I loved the atmosphere that they created live. God, they need to get that guy back behind the set."

Good Lord I agree!

Krabsworth 03-16-2006 06:29 PM

So I was just watching some Opeth on google videos...and I really like them. What are some albums I should look into on umm...*cough cough torrentspy cough cough* ? Do they scream much?

Darkness 03-16-2006 06:32 PM

Yeah, there usually is more growls then clean vocals, but theres an even amount on the new cd, Ghost Reveries. Theres no screaming on Damnation. But the rest have more growling. Check out Blackwater Park and Still Life first. Thats standard Opeth.

Krabsworth 03-16-2006 06:33 PM

Okay thanks.

Darkness 03-16-2006 06:35 PM

BTW I saw that Laiho video last night with the strings, that was hilarious.

Kaiwaz 03-16-2006 06:41 PM

Me neither...it's one of my least favorite Opeth songs.

Darkness 03-16-2006 06:47 PM
Me neither...it's one of my least favorite Opeth songs.
But it's the heaviest off of Damnation!!!

..That's not saying much..

But you can't help but love that second acoustic riff thats like, incredibly evil/catchy.

Shadows 03-16-2006 06:48 PM

Closure and Weakness are the only Damnation songs I don't like. It's a good thing Closure is followed by the amazing Hope Leaves.

eighty d 03-16-2006 06:49 PM

I like Closure's acoustic parts. It just seems like Mike got lost and didn't know where to take it after that. Live it's good, but studio it just meanders and doesn't go anywhere.

The acoustic parts are wicked fun to play though.

Shattered_Future 03-16-2006 06:49 PM

Hope Leaves is ungodly, though Closure absolutely rocks live. Keyboard solos = awesome.

Darkness 03-16-2006 06:51 PM

Hope Leaves pwns all other post Still Life ballads.

Kaiwaz 03-16-2006 06:57 PM

I don't mind Weakness, it's a good song to just put on repeat and sleep to. I just can't stand Closure all of the sudden. The only thing I like about it, is when it ends and Hope Leaves begins.
