I love BWP, but it took a long time to grow on me. I love how it just kicks straight into that awesome riff.

And The Funeral Portrait is definitely the weakest point on the album.

I learned to play the first riff on Godheads Lament today, it's really fun to play.

Jude 03-14-2006 08:25 PM
I love every second of Master's Apprentices. People think I'm crazy for not liking everything from Still Life, but considering that The Moor, Godhead's Lament, and White Cluster are the only songs I really like from that album, it's easily my least favorite Opeth record. Blackwater Park I love, except Bleak I dislike. I used to hate every song on that album passed Dirge for November, but it really grew on me.

NP: The Funeral Portrait
Whoa your tastes are basically opposite to mine...I love all of SL and it's my favorite album...Bleak is probably my 1st or second favorite BWP song...Master's Apprentices bores the crap out of me until the acoustic part..... :\

TojesDolan 03-14-2006 08:38 PM

"Serenity Painted Death" is a really fun song to play as well. That's gotta be my fave out of Still Life.

And I hardly ever play BWP because the middle acoustic section (the one after the first verse) is kind of boring.

Deth 03-14-2006 08:39 PM

Serenity Painted Death is retardedly good.

Shadius 03-14-2006 08:47 PM

I love how everyone has such varied opinions on Opeth's music. Such a complex band that attracts such different listeners, that get different things out of the songs.

At least we can all agree that To Bid You Farewell is an amazing song though... right?

Deth 03-14-2006 08:49 PM

Of course. There are no heretics here.

NP: Advent

4,300th post. Woo.

Darkness 03-14-2006 08:59 PM

That song sucks.

/is just trying to be different

TojesDolan 03-14-2006 08:59 PM

Yeah... a very good song. I don't think there will be disagreement there.

Then again this is the internet and opinions fly like Pigs in Pink Floyd's albums so yeah.

Deth 03-14-2006 09:00 PM

I need to listen to Animals again sometime. Fantastic album.

That song is indeed unbelievable. Flynn sort of made me realize the greatness of Morningrise. I still prefer Orchid, but it definitely has that same older Opeth feel.

I prefer Orchid too. I wouldn't say To Bid You Farewell is unbelieveable, really. I don't enjoy it that much. The intro is awesome, and there are a few great parts within the song, but I just don't think it's that good as a whole.

All the good conversation goes on when I'm not around!

Which one of the softer songs hit you harder than to bid you farewell?

Darkness 03-14-2006 10:18 PM

To tell the truth, no soft song hits me as hard as Face Of Melinda. I do NOT know why, but Opeth have never topped that song for me.

Crysiss 03-14-2006 10:30 PM

Face Of Melinda hit me the hardest. when i heard the intro, the hairs on my neck went up. And that part before it gets heavy....Oh my god..

Yes! Yes!!!

If you don't care for Bleak and Godheads Lament, I have a feeling we'll be good friends. :thumb:

It's so awesome to hear all the little things about music that excites everybody... I'm not the only one. I'm always the one's out of my friends that is always, "Hey! Listen to that! Did you hear that?!" *Rewinds CD for 30th time*

And no band does that quite like Opeth for me- It always seems like you hear something new each and everytime you listen... The replay value is through the roof, just one of the many reasons why Opeth is so brilliant to me...

As for the softer songs, I was huge into Death Whispered A Lullaby for a bit, then fell back into the serinity of both Benighted and of course FOM... But those two tracks are on such an elavated plain, it's like a given to say... I'd say currently I'm really into Hope Leaves.

gmoneyguy 03-15-2006 12:15 AM
No. You can play a harmony in natural minor scale. Harmonic minor scales are just used way too often in metal.
Natural Minor scale Is only used when You don't know what you are doing,

Shadius 03-15-2006 09:52 AM
Natural Minor scale Is only used when You don't know what you are doing,
That's not true, it depends upon the type of harmonies you want.

Haha, yeah... I'm the the same.
Thankfully, I rarely get a reply of '...Huh?', as most of my friends are, also, the same.
I hope it's mutual.

Ahh.. the glory of proverbially masturbating over a moment of a good song.

Shadius 03-15-2006 10:32 AM

I don't usually rewind songs or listen to songs over and over anymore, I've overplayed too much music in the past and now i'm sick of it. I'd hate to do it with some amazing music like Opeth, not matter how much replay value the tracks have.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I listen to probably at least two Opeth albums a day. But I do it in albums, so I won't get sick of any particular song.

 It's so true!

ok lateralus 03-15-2006 01:08 PM

I always loved the chorus of SPD, but overall it feels not very well put together, kind of flimsy, and my least favorite on SL.

Same here. I love the intro, and some other parts through out the song, but as a whole...

...I rather Face of Melinda.

Shattered_Future 03-15-2006 02:21 PM

I STILL don't know what is so good about that song.

Stormrider 03-15-2006 02:22 PM

Face of Melinda ?

I can't im ALL huge on it and all, but I still enjoy the song...its growing on me every listen.

Shattered_Future 03-15-2006 02:32 PM

It just seems really weak.

Stormrider 03-15-2006 02:34 PM

At first, I wasn't realy into it. It was weak. But now, like I said its growing on me.

I have it stuck in my head now :p

Shadows 03-15-2006 02:40 PM

Face of Melinda sounds very odd to me, but I kind of like it for some strange, twisted reason.

Shattered_Future 03-15-2006 02:43 PM

I personally think that's the worst song on the album...I got more used to Damnation era clean songs, so the earlier ones sound a bit odd to me.

Jude 03-15-2006 02:56 PM

Face of Melinda rules because

Vocal melodies
Great lyrics
that awesome first electric riff is just amazing when it kicks in
