tis a great song... and add me to the list of people who think WT>PHM... nothing against PHM though, i just prefer WT...
Yeah, I agree. PHM is great, but there's not as much to it as there is the later albums. TDS and The Fragile are so layered, the music can never get old. And even With Teeth is more layered than it, plus it just has downright better song writing.

Turkish 05-08-2006 02:18 PM
I'm surprised that I'm apparently one of the only people here that absolutely despises PHM.
Probably because it was freakin amazing...

Spiritofmosa 05-08-2006 09:35 PM

i'm listening to NIN for the first time.. they make me wanna smoke

bwnstl 05-08-2006 09:41 PM
Probably because it was freakin amazing...
Not really. It's rather boring, as well as the lyrics being just bad. Terrible Lie, Something I Can Never Have, and Sin are the only songs I like from it.

misunderstood 05-08-2006 10:16 PM

I do remember Trent saying something about making the next album Still-like. Who knows though. Anyway, All the Love In the World and Beside You In Time are probably my favorite tracks off With Teeth. I'm really really hoping that they play All the Love in the World on this upcoming tour...I'd love to hear it live. Though I actually do like PHM, I can honestly say it's my least favorite NIN album. For me it's actually:
TDS>TF>Still>WT>Broken>PHM.

deadinholywood 05-09-2006 12:22 AM

Right Where It Belongs is a great song of WT too, i was disappointed that they didnt play it when i saw them

for me
The Fragile>AATCHB>Still>WT>TDS>PHM>Broken

repcak 05-09-2006 07:47 AM

i just listen to With Teeth again... after such a long time, and to be serious i don't know what to say... its not bad, i like it... maybe even more than PHM.
sure there are some songs that i dislike, which i can't stomache, but then there are songs which i simply love:

- All the love in the world (best song)
- every day is exactly the same
- beside you in time
- right where it belongs
- and some more.

ThunderBass 05-09-2006 08:42 AM

for me...

TDS>Fragile>Broken>WT>PHM

*doesnt have Still* :upset: when i get my broadband back ill download it...

misunderstood 05-12-2006 09:29 PM
So with that said... As usual, the time in between tours is pretty busy. I've been working on going through the footage that was shot in El Paso and Oklahoma, helping push things along with Closure (still no update on that, by the way - it's in Interscope's hands and they seem to be slowly moving forward, so we can all hope for the best), and helping prepare a number of other exciting things related to the upcoming tour and The Spiral.
This was posted over at the spiral boards a few days ago. Just thought I'd post on here 'cause it gives us all still some hope that the CLOSURE dvd will see the light of day! I've been waiting for this damn thing for so long now..i had begun to lose hope. For a while i thought they might release it with the new footage, but it just wouldn't make sense to do so. I can't wait for both of them though. Anyway, less than a month now before I see NIN again! :p I have to settle for some more NIN (not that I mind at all!) while Tool leaves the states for the summer.

Does anyone know of that site that has the really, really in depth interpretation of The Downward Spiral? I've been trying to find it, but I can't...

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, I'd appreciate a link or something.

misunderstood 05-13-2006 12:09 AM

^I know exactly what site you're talking about. It's SickAmongThePure.com
I actually had the page where the interpretation was at bookmarked, but the site was shutdown a while back...so now there's no access to it. I've tried looking for it on other places around the net but no luck.

repcak 05-13-2006 07:10 AM

Great! Thanks for the upload...I've been looking for this for a while now. I should have just asked on here to see if anyone had it...
Anyway, I'm neither drunk nor high but I'm still about to put TDS in. :p

hehe,... no problem.

just came home from the city (its 3am) and i'm not drunk either :p

Kage 05-13-2006 09:00 PM

This analysis of The Downward Spiral is fascinating. I hadn't read it before, but it brings up many points I hadn't thought of before.

Kage 05-13-2006 11:28 PM

Eh, I'd be surprised if all or even most of the connections the essay draws to society, sociology, literature or psychology were intened by Reznor as he wrote the album. But I think that's even more poignant, the way the subconscious manipulates everything about what we do, and the way different aspects of life affect everything else, and how a person's frame of references, experiences and biases can bring a completely different and unique experience to something that everyone experiences.

I thought the way he tied different thematic elements of the album into each other was great. Like the repetition of certain lyrical phrases, the juxtaposition of natural, human sounds versus that of machines and the way those represent the magic of the unknown versus the sterile, hollow reality presented by science. It is very much in line with a lot of the Romantic and Symbolist artistic movements that share a similar existentialist tilt with Reznor. It's amazing the way things work out that way.

repcak 05-14-2006 04:22 AM

in music there is never a 100% true interpretation. the essay has elements and interpretation in it, i never thought before, but you should never forget that music is subjective - so its up to you how you interprate it.
other interpretations can help you to see the larger picture, but its up to you if you wanna believe it or not. some of the things i see the same as the author, some others not.

repcak 06-14-2006 04:36 PM

its exactly one year ago, that NIN played in Vienna :D

14.6.2006 ... yup ... time pass

White 06-14-2006 05:28 PM

I just realized that "sin" is a wicked song haha, I was listning to it today and its gotta be my favorite song

X3r6x 06-18-2006 05:44 AM

My favourite song from NIN is definitely Only, the videos pretty cool too =)

inassociationwithdeanlearner 06-18-2006 08:19 AM

I think mines gotta either be 'suck' or 'piggy'
Used to be 'the perfect drug' but then i kinda overlistened to it and i find it boring now.

bwnstl 06-18-2006 06:23 PM

I couldn't pick only one favorite NIN song. Maybe one from each album:

Something I Can Never Have
Gave Up
The Becoming/I Do Not Want This/Eraser [I couldn't decide...]
We're In This Together/The Great Below
The Mark Has Been Made/Ripe (With Decay)
And All That Could Have Been
The Line Begins To Blur/Beside You In Time

See? I can't even pick just one from each album.

I agree to an extent however, like in literature, some interpretations are more plausible than others. The essay does an ok job of showing how TDS is inspired by existential thought, but the level of analysis isn't really all that much deeper than you would get from a fan imo.

man you did better than me... i just tried that and struggled to keep it to three from each album... lol

preciouswhore 06-30-2006 04:07 PM

Favorite song?
Pffffftttt, sure, why don't I pick my favorite freckle?
I'm not saying that I like everything (Some of it's.....I dunno, just yea) but the majority of their stuff I love.
Hence my being part of The Spiral, anyone else here?

Werny 07-01-2006 04:59 AM

I doubt it's intentional, I doubt Trent's even heard of them, but has anyone else noticed the similarity between The Hand That Feeds and Only Hate (Baresark) by Esoteric?

I'm part of The Spiral as well. Actually, my membership is about to expire in about two weeks or so...I know there's not much going on with NIN right now and it will remain the same for quite some time, but meh, I'm still planning on renewing. Not only do I get a discount for the renewal but I enjoy the boards over there.

Anyway, sorry to bring an old thread back but I was just wondering if anyone's heard anything on the live dvd that was supposedly recorded during the last tour? Or anything new on NIN for that matter? It's been a really long time since I've been on these boards...internet and computer problems.

Kage 08-22-2006 03:32 PM

As far as I know there's really nothing going on right now. Who knows what he's doing, but he's not sharing it with us.

Jaundice 08-22-2006 03:52 PM

I'm pretty sure he's at work on a new album already, including songs that didn't make it on With Teeth.

Kage 08-22-2006 03:57 PM

Hopefully.

He can do better than With Teeth.

repcak 08-22-2006 03:57 PM

yes, he said (over a year ago) that he is writting songs and it should be a solo-project -> that means: only he and his piano. so we can expect another "still" record! that would be awesome

repcak 08-22-2006 03:58 PM
Hopefully.

i always thought you love WT?

Kage 08-22-2006 03:59 PM

I do.

He can do better.

Jaundice 08-22-2006 04:04 PM
I do.

He can do better.
Yeah, With Teeth is great, and has some pretty excellent songs on it, but it lacks the consistency of quality that can be found on the earlier albums.

repcak 08-22-2006 04:09 PM

i still think TF is his best work; he can never top it!

Kage 08-22-2006 04:11 PM

I agree that TF is the best, though The Downward Sprial is riiight there. I hope he can outdo himself, if not in pure brilliance than perhaps in pure beauty and emotion (if the piano/voice thing is true).

Maybe the problem is that now that he's sober, he doesn't need the catharsis that making music provides him, so he's less willing to put as much time, headaches, and effort into his layered expressionist pieces. And what he's left with are his pop sensibilites.

Jaundice 08-22-2006 04:17 PM

I've actually never listened to The Fragile, though I plan to at some point and I have high expectations.

Therefore, at present I'm ready to call The Downward Spiral the best of TR's works that I've heard.

I know it's an essential album, but it's never been convenient for me to go out and buy the Fragile. If I have a good opportunity I will, but lately I'm spending my money on other albums/things.

Kage 08-22-2006 04:18 PM

That album was life-changing for me.

hey! I should go add that to my list in the life-changing albums thread. I forgot about it.
