quo vadis- Dysgenics

I think this will be some good listening, if it’s the same as atheist and the like.
My first encounter with this band.

Starts of with some metallica sounding guitar work, but!!!
But, at 0:11 double bass kicks come in, wow, that sounds great, really tight sound, I love the sound of his double bassing, some nice fills, and the guitaring is very nice,.
At 1:29 vocals come in, I don’t like them too much,.
But it’s not that bad.
The drumming is just insane. I like the drummers style.
2:38 a nice solo, very clean not realy DM like, but very nice nonetheless.
3:39 vocals enter once more, and after a few secs another guitar solo.
Sounds a bit DT like.
At 5:08 the vocals come in to tell the end of the story, he growls very clear in this part.

The end :p

The drumming was awesome, the vocals I wasn’t fan of, nice song tho

9/10
Would have been 10/10 if the vocals were better

My picks:

My dying bride – the blue lotus (doom metal)

Burzum – die Liebe Nerpus (dark ambient, keyboard)

Let me know if you need a yousendit

alright, I'm not the only one
They would be better if they had some deeper growling vocals like Opeth, dark tranquillity or at the gates.

but great nonetheless

Or rather, you liked the drums and guitar work and didn't like the vocals.
They aren't bad, you just didn't appreciate them.

Burzum ? Die Liebe Nerpus?

Song starts off with a keyed instrument(Piano?) and a stringed instrument(possibly a lute) played using a synth/keyboard. The intro is very folksih in rhythm and melody, and sounds like it should be accompanied by tambourines and toms.
Around 30 secs a tambourine enters joined by a lead melody. The lead melody is, I think a horn, but all of the voices suffer somewhat from being played on a snyth/keyboard. The tambourine and Horn melody add to the already established folk feel of the song. Save for a few alterations in the keyboard line not much else goes on in this song.

The folk feel makes this song interesting but it would really improve from some variations and length (it falls in at 2:14). 5/10

Haggard - Per Aspera Ad Astra 6:40

Woah, intro got me started already. This is going to be great song.
Violin intro with and ochestraic percusion.

0:16 - the Metal elements come in, drums, guitars. Female Opera Vocals.

0:31 - growling comes in. Still very extremely classical at this point, while still metal as well.

1:05, the classic elements fade away, guitars take more control. Violins and whatnot are still behind, but the guitars are in the spotlight now.

Clean female vocals come in.

1:49 -growlings again.

2:02 - clean male vocals! with growling backing.

now it alternates with female vocals and growls.

2:50 - sounds a very power metal riff, but then it slows down again.

3:10 - sounds as if the song has finished. then a violin part comes out again.

3:36 - tambourines come in, and it sounds all folkish. Soon the distortions and growls enter again.

The entire song just goes between these.

Classical (emphasis on violins)
Well blended guitars with the classical elements
Female and male cleans, male growls.

And its enough to make the song majestic.

6:12 - Solo finally. Then it ends.

Great song, good blend between classical and metal. Very good blend. I've been trying to get haggard material, finally i got it. If you like nightwish, you'd like haggard.

8.5/10

Falconer - Mindtraveller

Begins with a cool guitar riff that is joined by drums then the rest of the band. It lacks energy. This is one instance where speed could help that. Lo and behold, the drums go into a double time beat and it feels much more energetic. I like the folksyness. The singer sounds cheesy but he has a good voice so it's alright.

I really like it when the drums do the double time feel. It makes the song feel... twice as fast. The mix is a little strange. I don't know why, it just doesn't sound quite right.

The song is quite repetitive. I wish they had taken more time to do interesting things, like a key change or meter change. The solo is cool but short. Pretty standard power metal fare as far as the solo is concerned.

The singer said "elven"

7/10 Nothing special.

As far as I know, I like this general kind of music. Liked the previous Isis I have heard.
Isis - Hive Destruction - 5:37

Starts off sounding rather like horror film music, actually. Very wind-chimey, eerie sounding. That's all disturbed by some very nice, thick, dense riffing at about 0:35. Well, loved that the instant I heard it, so this is looking promising. Rest of the band isn't doing anything particularly interesting, but that's not to say they're bad.

Vocals come in, and they're okay. They're not great - they sound kinda weak actually - but I can live with them. The guitars repeat the cool riffage a bit, before moving into a slower, more melodic lead thing around 1:50. I like the drums now, slow, paced, dramatic. Not enough to make me love the song by themselves..but maybe the guitars are, so that might not matter.

I can see this being a rather short review, as I'm only thirty seconds from the end, and haven't yet written much. The song's basically switching between bouts of that forced-sounding vocalist, and that really cool guitar.

And it ends, with neither a bang nor a whimper. Just seems to end.

7.5/10 Not bad, but I'm undecided as to whether I'll keep it and/or listen to it again. Had some good stuff going for it though (namely, those guitars), but overall didn't have enough to just blow me away.

Jesu - Tired of Me

Someone mislabeled something somwhere but this is what was in the yousendit. It's 9:31 long.

Begins with a slow, dramatic guitar and some bass. Reminds me a lot of Sigur Ros. The vocals come in and they sound really nice. There's some effect on them I can't place but it sounds good. Not a whole lot is happening. It's chillout metal. This fits with Pelican under my genre of post-metal.

This will be very short as I am already 5 minutes into the song and have written very little.

The music almost feels like it should be played in a church. It just has that sound to it. THe drums take on a very different feel towards the end. More snare, almost like a march. Nicely done. I've never heard Godflesh, should I go looking?

Oops, yeah, that was Tired of Me. It was supposed to be Tired of Me, I'm just confused as to how it ended up labelled otherwise.

As for whether you should check out Godflesh..well, they're industrial pioneers, which may well be reason enough. Other than that, read around reviews for Jesu, and see what you think. Jesu is (Godflesh main-man) Justin Broadrick's first venture since Godflesh fell apart (painfully for him, apparently) in early 2002, and the contrast and parallels between the two are really cool; they're both really heavy, dense, etc, but Jesu is ultimately uplifting while Godflesh is ultimately negative and smothering. Makes for plenty of cool metaphors, if nothing else (mostly to do with Jesu being Broadrick's healing). I think the whole situation is great, but it makes everyone who reviews Jesu sound like a big hippy.

EDIT: Dibs.

Bartender 03-19-2005 05:18 PM

I think I may have reviewed another song by these guys at some point, but I can't remember it well, so never mind.
Equilibrium - Die Prophezierung - 5:10

Starts off with somethign that sounds almost woodwindy. Good though; lively. Guitars come in good and heavy after a couple of repetitions, following the same basic pattern of the folky instruments at the start. Vocals come in pretty soon too, just a decent growl. Reminds me a bit of Martin Schirenc. Oh wait; short instrumental break, and then the vocalist comes back in, sounding little like Martin Schirenc; now sounds much deeper, and more 'foreign' (it sounds more obviously continental European).

A roar around 1:40, and the music carries on in this rather swift vein it's been in for a while - that woodwindy sound comes back. Another long roar signals the end of this instrumental section, and we get what I assume is another verse.

2:50 - this guy really likes his extended roaring screams. I'm not complaining though, he's quite good at them.

Now it suddenly sounds more obviously symphonic (as if this symphonic element has always been there, and is now just more pronounced). Around 3:20 we start having the introductory bit, punctuated by blasts of heavier guitar-driven music. Good stuff.

The rest of the song more or less carries on like that. Not to say it gets boring, but there's nothing more I can say about it without just repeating myself (even more). And it fades out swiftly at 5:10.

8/10. It was good.

**** Sparrer - Watch Your Back

This track is actually really good. Cool riff in the intro, i love his voice for some reason. When was this recorded? The Oi's! are pretty good, abit weak but pretty cool. The verse is very catchy, and the chorus is incredibly cool.

Solo : Nice punk solo here, nothing flashy in any way, but it still ****ing owns. All these bands seem to talk about is the government though, but these lyrics seem pretty well thought out.

'Well we dont wanna fight!'

A good track overall, definatly checking more of these dudes out. Now.

I had this song already, but previous to today I had not listened to it. I decided to give it a shot.

The intro is decent, nothing too special or overly catchy. After the intro the song picks up a little bit and the vocals come in, which I enjoyed. The first two minutes wasn't bad. At about 2:10, the song quiets down. I really enjoyed this part. Next comes the solo, which I also really enjoyed. Everything post-solo I enjoyed just as much as the first 2 minutes.

Definitely not a waste of my time, although I can't say it'll be a regular on my playlist. Just another In Flames song.

Now:

Evergrey - The Great Deceiver (metal)
Freedom Call - Land of Light (power metal)
Into Eternity - Shallow (metal)

If you can't find the songs, just tell me.

Evergrey - The Great Deceiver

As I mentioned above I tried to get this song but couldn't obtain it, however I found the song that they released and apparently the title track of the album 'Recreation Day' and I really enjoyed that song, so going into this song I have quite high hopes and through the first listen I wasn't disappointed.

[0:00] - The songs starts immediately with some very nice guitar work, a solo and some great tones. The bass plays relatively quick, singular notes underneath this which carries into the verse when the vocals enter.

[0:22] - The verse seems a bit dull like its lacking something, until the guitars to their little fill, this occurs twice. And then the intensity from the band increases and the vocalist gets a little higher... then it repeats this structure but instead of a build up there is a heavily distorted guitar playing an ... ahhh irregular rhythm I guess, with a keyboard over the top, I really like it.

[1:50] The chorus seems to be chanted, then there is a drum roll and it goes into the more intense version of the verse, so far I really like this.

[2:34] A similar feel to the irregular rhythm above, however this one is more abstract and there is strings above it. Then it returns to the normal one for two bars it sounds, then into the pumped up part of the verse again.

[3:35] Same riff/solo is played as the beginning into the solo which sounds awesome.

[4:18] After some awesome arpeggioes the song ends abruptly.

 AWESOME.

Possibly the best song I have been recommended so far in this Forced Listening, I really really enjoyed it. It has a bit of everything I guess, the only possible downside in the song is the bassist, I personally don't listen out for the bass, though if there is a complex bassline I can generally hear it...

Anyways easily a
