CHECK IT OUT AT: www.myspace.com/wwnmusic www.sonicbids.com/homegroan3 |
I highly doubt that, but I'll listen.
|
Seeing Phil Lesh is probably one of my biggest goals for this summer. Have fun at the show! I'm pretty jealous.
|
moe. is releasing a new warts & all on the 27th this month. i can't wait! the last one was so damn good. i'm grabbing this one the day it comes out for sure.
|
They're up to like volume 6 right?
|
Phil & Friends was so kickass last night. They opened with Brown-Eyed Woman, then went into Moma Tried, and they played a really sick Aligator. Then they went into High Time, and the Casey Jones was really good too. That was the first set.
They opened the second with Feel Like A Stranger, and Sittin' On Top Of The World. There was also like a 20 min Playin' In The Band > 25 min Dark Star that rocked. From there They went into The Golden Road > Uncle John's Band. THey ended the set with Sugar Magnolia (with Sunshine Daydream) and the encore was Dire Wolf. It was really good, great energy throughout the show. There were a few songs that I wasn't sure about what they were, but they were good all the same. Larry Campbell busted out the Violin for SOTOTW and another song. Jackie Greene was real sick, same with John Molo and the keyboardist. Phil rocked the **** though, his vocals during Dark Star were insane. Highlight: Aligator, Playin > Dark Star. |
Allgood
will be insane |
Are you going?
I'm hitting up Sonic Bloom this summer. |
hell yea, got my tickets already
the lineup is pretty unreal. I can't wait to see Phil. The show you saw sounds awesome - Alligator! I would also love to see the Golden Road or Feel Like a Stranger, but I really hope he pulls out Viola Lee or Cumberland (or both) at Allgood. Also seeing Billy K at the end of this month, he's touring with Oteil and Scott Murawski. |
It was really nice. Me and my friend were dancing during Sugar Magnolia and this drunk guy walks up to us with a full glass of booze and says, "you guyz like whiskey?". We were like hell yeah and he just gives us the full cup, he was so trashed.
I'm seeing Head To The Hills on Saaturday (mainly because Billy Nershi will be with them), and then Ratdog/Allman Bros. in August, Keller/Yonder in August, Umphrey's/Gov't Mule in August, STS9 in Sept, & Sonic Bloom in June. So I'll be pretty occupied for the next while. |

I feel so blessed living in Colorado. I'd be wiling to bet we have one of the top Jam music scenes in the country. Not to mention incredible venues. Fillmore + Red Rocks + The Fox = awesome.
|
pretty lucky seeing alligator
that is all |

Yeah I wish I lived in Colorado. Out in New York, we have a great scene in terms of bands playing here, but jambands don't form and grow in New York like they do in Colorado. String Cheese, Yonder Mountain, Rose Hill Drive, Keller Williams (I think)... all Colorado. I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch too. |
Yeah, Keller is from Virginia but we have a lot of awesome bands here too. All of the members of SCI have side projects around here too, like EOTO and Zilla, and Pangea. It's really nice.

Has anyone else read this yet? |

Eh Keller's not that good anyways so you're not missing out much by not having him from there. He does what he does very well and it's a pretty cool gig but gets old quick. So I went to Mountain Jam last weekend... quite a good time. Amazing music all weekend. Warren Haynes is a really special person. Gov't Mule, Sharon Jones, Michael Franti, Levon Helm, and Dark Star Orchestra all killed it. Festivals are sweet. |
Don't think i know of any jam bands. what is the best one in your opinion?
|
The obvious suggestions would be:
Bluegrass - Yonder Mountain String Band, Keller Williams, String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon, David Grisman. Progressive - Umphrey's McGee, moe., Phish (to a degree). Electronica - Lotus, Sound Tribe Sector 9, The Disco Biscuits. Badass - Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, Phil Lesh And Friends, Gov't Mule, EOTO, Zilla. Just go to www.archive.org and search any of the naems and you should be able to find some shows, except for Phish in which case go to www.phishows.com
Eh Keller's not that good anyways so you're not missing out much by not having him from there. Yeah hopefully it'll be on iclips. It was streamed live on iclips over the weekend (although I heard the quality was a little iffy)
I just found Levon Helm's set which I'm really excited to hear again since it might've been the highlight of the whole festival. That guy sure knows how to put on a show. I already managed to snag up most of the other sets from the weekend including Umphrey's and Grace Potter who both rocked but unfortunately we were on our way during Grace's set and setting up tents during Umphrey's. Also missed Ratdog's set which was pretty mediocre. They opened the show with Help On The Way and Bobby forgot the first line... it's time he moved onto to something new since Ratdog is kind of boring and just not very good imo. I guess we didn't miss much by leaving after Levon's set. And the Grateful Dead and Phish are usually mentioned as the best starting point for jambands. To be honest, I liked both bands when I first started listening to jambands but the band that really drew me in was Tea Leaf Green. They were the first non classic rock band that I fell in love with. I became a deadhead only after I had already become obsessed with Tea Leaf Green. As for Phish, I like them a lot, but can't count them as one of my absolute favorites since they are lacking a bit in the songwriting department. Having said that, I'm listening to Mike's Song right now and I'm very excited for the Phish reunion that looks very possible right now since I missed out on them while they were still together. |
I haven't ever really been the biggest fan of Ratdog, to me PL and Friends >>>>>>> Ratdog by far. That's cool that they played Help though. Really The Dead's American Beauty is what drew me into Jam Bands, listening to that album for the first time was absolutely magical.
|
I agree. Ratdog kind of sucks. Same slow, repetitive grooves over and over again and Bobby insists on singing Jerry songs which he's no good at singing anyways. From what I've heard, it's pretty boring. Phil on the other hand, is still breaking through barriers and sounding fresh. I have a ton of respect for Phil's post Dead projects. Can't wait to see him and Levon in July.
|
Yeah, Phil Lesh is absolutely amazing. The only time I really liked Weir's voice was from Anthem > From the Mars Hotel. I really don't like in the early days, and it's gone to **** for the most part now. He sounds really good on American Beauty, but I guess they all pretty much made vocals one of the biggest if not the biggest priority on that album. I saw Anthem To Beauty and Jerry was like "we tried to not get so hung up on the instrumentals and focused more on the vocals", it payed off for the time being.
|
80/35 is a mini-festival that's going to be on the 4th and 5th of July in my hometown.
Flaming Lips, Yonder Mountain, Public Property, Jakob Dylan |
Nice, I'm looking forward to Nedfest here. It's got David Grisman Quintet, Steve Kimmock, The Motet, Kyle Hollingsworth, Leftover Salmon, and Shanti Groove.

I don't think Bobby's voice has necessarily gone bad, but he doesn't use it as well now. He sings too many Jerry songs with Ratdog, and his voice just doesn't work at all for a lot of those songs. I'm hopefully going to Gathering of the Vibes about 45 minutes away from me in July. Phil & Friends, The Black Crowes, Derek Trucks & The Soul Stew Revival, Taj Mahal, Jackie Greene... it should be a pretty good time. Has anyone here seen Yonder Mountain before? I'm thinking about seeing them this week, tickets are $35 though which seems a little pricey to me. Are they worth that? |
Yonder is amazing live. Amazing. Thats about how much I paid when I saw them recently. You should definitely go.
|
I've heard Yonder is really good live. I'm seeing them the beginning of August with Keller at Red Rocks. :)

Yeah Yonder is some good ****.. And have fun seein' Keller. Just wanna say whats up to Robo and jong. Long time no talk fellas, I see that the Classic Rock forums gone under. Not surprising. |

And yeah, I came on one day and saw no more classic rock thread and was pretty disappointed. But I guess a few of us still pop in this thread. I don't think I'll get to see Yonder because my parents will be hard to convince since they don't trust me at all and won't let me drive 45 minutes away to go to a concert. And I don't have enough energy to convince them. Umphrey's, that's awesome you get to see them at Red Rocks. Red Rocks looks like the coolest place to see a concert. I need to get out there some day. |

There were so many sweet Dead concerts there in the day, the venue really seemed to bring out there good side. The Greek Theatre and Shoreline as well. |
My friend was telling me of all the places he's been (this is including The Warfield, The Tabernacle, Hornings, both Filmores) he has said that Red Rocks is by far his favorite place.

Did anyone here go to Bonnaroo?

All Points West Music and Arts Festival 2008!
ALL POINTS WEST MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL is set for August 8, 9 and 10, 2008. The three-day, multi-stage music and arts festival featuring a wide variety of artists including Radiohead and Jack Johnson will take place at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, a historic location offering panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Manhattan skyline.
The festival’s name is inspired by the area’s rich history, particularly Ellis Island and the NJ Central Railroad terminal located on the festival site, where many arriving immigrants boarded trains for ALL POINTS WEST. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit “Friends of Liberty State Park.” ALL POINTS WEST is produced by Goldenvoice/AEG Live and Liberty Events in association with the HighLine Ballroom. Saw Phil this weekend... my life will never be the same.
|
Nice man. What show did you catch? A few of my friends were at the show in Chicago (6/13, I think), with Levon opening. I've been listening to a few of his sets from the latest shows - they are all spectacular. I can't wait to see him at ALLGOOD.
|
Aw man, I'm jealous of your friends. I have that 6/13 show on my computer and it is epic! Help On The Way > Slipnot! > Wharf Rat > Eyes Of The World > China Cat Sunflower > The Eleven > I Know You Rider Mason's Children > Franklin's Tower is just about the nastiest second set I've ever heard from Phil. Download it if you don't have it.
I was at the 6/22 show in New Hampshire which maybe isn't quite as good as 6/13 but it was still amazing. The venue really sucked. New Hampshire is pretty conservative (I don't want to be offensive, but redneck is probably a better word to describe people up there) and they didn't take the invasion of thousands of pot-smoking hippies very well. Cops and security guards everywhere. The ****ing county sheriff was there. But Phil made up for it by playing Shakedown Street and Truckin' which both seemed very appropriate for the place. The Shakedown was honestly the best I've ever heard. 1979-01-15 is good, but you need to download this show to hear the Shakedown. Jackie did a great job on the vocals and it went into this crazy psychedelic jam that eventually segued into Jack Straw which really surprised me. Set 1: Playin' In the Band > Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodeloo W.S. Walcott Medicine Show# Alabama Getaway* Big River* Gone Wanderin'* Loose Lucy Set 2: Shakedown Street* > Jack Straw Like A Ball And Chain* Viola Lee Blues > Dark Star > China Doll* > Dark Star > Mason's Children > Sugaree Truckin' E: Dancin' In The Streets* # With Levon Helm, Jimmy Vivino (Levon's other guitarist) and Levon's horn section * With Theresa Williams (Larry Campbell's wife, kinda Phil's new Donna) Dancin' sucked but everything else was tight. The Viola Lee Blues > Dark Star was a crazy trip. I heard definite teases of Cumberland Blues and China Cat Sunflower in that jam, and possibly The Wheel as well. Also, check out the 6/21 show. I wasn't there, but downloaded it and it's pretty good stuff. |
Yea, I've downloaded the 6/13 show, haven't listened yet though. The show you saw looks great. Aside from the obvious heavy-hitters, you got a Big River, which is like one of my favorite songs ever for some reason. I'm really hoping for a Viola Lee or Shakedown (both?) at ALLGOOD.
Also, 1/15/79 is by no means the end-all-be-all of Shakedowns. It's a solid one (what draws me to this particular version is the segue from Miracle, wow!). 6/30/85 is the real killer, absolutely packed with energy and a killer jam that keeps building, culminating in a nice peak before they return to earth. The rest of this show ain't so bad either (June 85 was hot hot hot; check out 6/27 at SPAC too). |
I'm a pretty big fan of the Halloween '79 Shakedown; it's decently long too, like 17 minutes. 11/29/80 is also really good as well.
