I love all the little hidden messages on Tool's albums. My favourite one still is "See you auntie!"

deadohiosky9 10-17-2004 04:07 PM
Probably because those lyrics seem to fit the music more.

Maynard claims he's a translator of TOOL's music. If he'd done it the more 'correct' way, it probably wouldn't sound right.
Nice point.

i suppose i have a limited vocabulary (which is surprising to me), but i know that if you say "see you auntie" phonetically and syllable by syllable, youll hear the word, and i know what the word is, i just dont know how to spell it or what it means, so if you could help a brotha out and tell me what all of that is, itd be cool, ok later

edit: oooooh yeah, 50th page, that feels like an acomplishment, i think ill go have a pepsi edge

an_underused_memory 10-18-2004 03:22 AM

When I transcribe Maynard's lyrics, I find a lot of phrses like that "my blood before me begs me/open up my heart again"
I think the best way to write down the grammar that maynard sings with is
"my blood before me begs me: open up my heart again..."
it seems a bit similar to when he sings
"the moon tells me a secret (my confidant): as full and bright as I am, this light is not my own (and) - a million light reflections pass over me.."

Its very anal of me (us) to be discussing tool's grammar - as someone said, lyrics are to be sung, poems can stay written down.
To me, tool lyrics are poetry, but to some it may wreck without maynard's delivery..

50 pages is a great accomplishment for this thread, and its good to see the list of regular posters here increasing. (but there are better ways to celebrate, really :D )

As for the word that is spelt out, it is a curse word so unless you have very bad mouthing relatives, its probably one of those words you will pick up from others. In any case, depending on how old you are, you shouldn't know words like that in any case!

But then again, MJK does use cursing in his lyrics too, but in more creative ways than most other bands
Opiate is awesome!!
I feel guilty though :( , cause I downloaded it instead of buying it.

Also, I just noticed there is an MJK reference in my math book. There's a logic puzzle, in which you have to figure out the hobbies and home cities of six peole. When the chart was solved, Maynard's hometoen was Ravenna, and his hobby was playing gutar. At first i thought, "oh cool, , Maynard." But, last night, i was reading the tool faq, and it says something about Maynard mentioning a small town in Ohio called Ravenna while he was at a concert in Ohio. Either that's an amazing coincidence, or someone really likes tool.
yeh he did live their for a while while he was lad, makes small reference in jimmy, and also Intermission is just the main riff of jimmy on keyboard.(cool)

Amen.

Maynard is without a doubt the best lyricist (as well as vocalist) to hit the rock/metal scene in general. It's most evident once you hear the albums Aenima and Lateralus, as that is when he really starts to open up and write amazing pieces. Every track on Aenima with vocals is fun to try to decipher. Lateralus is a little more straight forward sometimes, but getting at what Maynard actually meant when he wrote them is trickier than you might think.

You all have probably been over this before, but what would you suggest as a starting point for Tool, Aenima or Lateralus?

Aenima.

Lateralus is better after....to me it's a better album, but Aenima shows you more of what TOOL's about. Aenima is an album that says, "We're TOOL. We're gonna play. Get ****ing used to it." Lateralus is more refined. It's more trippy. It's more...artistic, shall we say. Lateralus has the band at their most mature yet, of course, and so the album impresses more than Aenima did.

However, Lateralus' title track, "Schism", "The Grudge", and "The Reflection" are some of the most amazing songs ever. Those are the gems on Lateralus.

Aenima is more easy to get into- "Aenima", "Eulogy", "Stinkfist", etc. It also has the song "Third Eye", which shows what to expect on Lateralus. "Pu****" is epic.

Take your pick, you won't be wasting money either way.

TOOL's more alternative rock than metal.

Just a head's up.

:D It's a great song, APC's cover isn't half bad either.

themightyquinn23 10-18-2004 05:32 PM

Ah, I thought he was referring to my Working Class Hero title. I haven't changed that in awhile come to think of it...

Anyways, I'll going to get Aenima eventually. That was the one I was leaning towards, and I haven't heard any bad things about it.

Start right from the beginning... Opiate.

It's awesome to see how the band progresses from Opiate all the way throught the pure genious that is Lateralus.

x the patient x6 10-18-2004 09:08 PM

thats strange, i did just the oppisite, but got the same effect, almost like i enjoyed it more because it was different...

anyway, i just tried that fibanochi track listing, pure genious, it works perfectly, ok later

omgwtfboogie 10-18-2004 09:09 PM

Oh, the order where the songs flow perfectly? The one you can graph and stuff?

x the patient x6 10-18-2004 09:25 PM

uhh, i think, the graphing is news to me, but im sure Adam Jones Is GOD might be able to help you, he surpasses me in Toology...he mustve read the tdn faq more than me...

It can be done, my friend showed me how. I was just wondering if it was the same order.

How'd you arrange them?
where does it say God on the cover of lateralus??! ive looked for so long, and i cant see it!
It's said in the brain on the second last page of the transparent booklet (already answered). Anyway, last night I was wondering why is it there? I've read on the net that Maynard (or Tool as a whole), are not exactly fond of christianity. So I figured, it would then kinda make sense if it was written in the brain, giving the message god is in the brain of people. Or, to extend from that, god exists in the minds of people, and nowhere else.

Anyone else ever thought about or know why it's written there? it's just something thats intrigued me.
It can be done, my friend showed me how. I was just wondering if it was the same order.

the finbanochi numbers are 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 etc etc, and because Lateralus is 13 tracks long, the 21 isnt really nessecary, but

the new order is

The Grudge
Eon Blue Apocalypse
The Patient
Schism
Ticks and Leeches
Faaip De Oid
Mantra
Parabol
Parabola
Lateralus
Disposition
Reflection
Triad

most of it is linear but the ones that arnt make alot of difference...its really intresting, the transitions of the songs kind of gets lost if you have ot manually change the track, so if you have the ability to program which tracks a cd player could play, it makes it so much better, ok later

Everything is subjective, I think that is what they were trying to portray.
