Jacknife - How Does It Feel - 3:12

I remember reviewing Element Eighty a while back, so I'll try these guys instead.

Starts off with some pretty cool, sludgy riffing, which I like. Promising start. Pretty soon goes into a fairly standard, chugging metalcore/'nu-thrash' groove. Still, it's not bad, but it's nothing great either. I liked the start, though.

Vocals come in, and I don't like them much. Harsh, but not too harsh, but they've got nothing to make them stand out from many other bands' vocals. The guitars (and bass, presumably) do this rather cliche stop-start thing for what I assume is the chorus (as the lyrics are revolving around the title). Ah, that little bit around 1:38 where all the music drops away (so there's just vocals) doesn't help the cliche matter, either.

This I like more; around 2:00-2:25 there's some better, slower riffing. Vocals come back in briefly (from about 2:12-2:25), and then we get a rather cool solo. It's not ultra-technical or anything, but it's got a good tone, and fits the song. Too short, though, as we're now into what I assume is the end of the song, with the vocals back, and some riff similar to before, but better.

6/10, I think. It was okay, but I really didn't like the vocals, and a lot of the guitar work (which I got the impression was the other main focus of the song) seemed too unoriginal. The solo, though short, was nice, though.

Brutal Truth - Anti Homophobe

Starts off with a slow grooving part.

Starts to speed up.

Goes into reasonably fastpaced death/grind, which is actually quite thrashing! some barking vocals over top... then there is this part with these cymbal clashes, it's cool, I like that part.

This goes one for a minute or so, then it's back into the slower groove. Then fast again. Then it's over.

It didn't have many riffs, and the slow/fast/slow/fast was predictable. But it thrashed along nicely, I found myself banging my head.

7/10

My suggestions:
Abhorrence - Abattoir (ultra-aggressive brazilian death)
Nephasth - Conceived by the Inhuman Blood (see above)
Spawn of Possession - Church of Deviance (technical death metal)

Arucard 01-21-2005 10:19 AM

Dargon, can i do Spawn Of Possesion - Swarm of The Formless instead?
Its the only song i can find.

Dancin' Man 01-23-2005 09:58 AM

Dibs unless 88 fingers want the right Spawn of Possesion song which he can get from me via AIM or Slsk.

Abhorrence - Abattoir

Dargon thought he had us with hard to find metal, but I found it! (I wish I had gotten to review the Spawn of Possesion song, I love that band)

This song begins with blazing drums and a standard DM guitar part. Dissonant and fast. The drummer is fast. His snare hits are blazing and accurate, not the spazzy kind. He also keeps the bass blasting. The guitars are pretty far back in the mix and I can hear no bas. The vocals are fairly understandable for such a deep growl.

The song is really fast which makes it a little tough to differentiate parts, especially in the guitars because they're so low in the mix. I like it anyway. There is a break in the drumming and then it blasts in again. Then a short guitar solo that is not very impressive but the tone is good. I think there are 2 vocalists. Then another guitar solo. I like this better. He can tem pick pretty damn quick. I think the guitars switch in the middle so they both get to solo. It's a good one, fast dissonant and long enough to not be lame.

This song was pretty good but not amazing. I may try to find more of this band.
6.5/10

Suidakra : Crown The Lost

This song starts of with a very nice guitar riff, which is then harmonised by the other guitar after a couple of seconds. Unlike alot of Thrash/Death, this song gets straight to the point, with the vocals coming in at only 0:11. He obviously has a good growling voice, and the lyrics are audbile, which is always good.

Some very nice riffing going on throughout, but the drums dont really do it for me, there isnt much blasting and the double bass is abit rough around the edges, but he certainly has some speed. I especially like the guitars in this song.

The verse is absolutly great, the vocals kicking in extremly well each time, really complimenting to music style.

Around 2:00, a breakdown ensues, with some nicely palm muted riffs and some very good screams. This happens again at 2:30, but a more melodic, slow down break, with him singing relativly cleanly and a clean guitar in the background. This lasts for slightly to long IMO, and only goes back into the thrash at about 3:50, but when it does it does.

The end is the best bit of the song for me, not because the song was bad, but because the double bass kicks in for real, the dual leading of the guitrists comes back with avengence, and makes the song go out in an explosive bang. Nice growl at the end to top of a great song.

The Filaments - Men of the Law

Generally, I am not a fan of punk but certain bands, especially ska have weasled their way into my heart (Goldfinger!!!). Let's hear it.

The song starts off sounding like it could be power metal. Then the horns which are still cool. Then the punk voice. The arrogant spitting punk voice. It sounds like it was recorded through a cheap mic. I like this song. The horns also sound fake, like they come through a synth. This reminds me of polka power metal because of the horn's synth-y sound they come across more like accordians. The drummer must get tired. He sounds like he is working really hard because of the force he's using. This song does not let up. I really like it.

The drums are a little cymbal heavy in parts though. It's fine because the song is short (2:07) and any par that you may not like doesn't last very long.

Norther - Cry

This track starts of good, and you know its gonna be Power. From the choir in the background, to the palm muted riff, its all sounding very atmospheric. I like the pounding double bass.

Verse is pretty slow, and has alot of that Power Metal impact. Did these guys just take Alexi from CoB and force him to sing on the track? Sorry just asking. :)

A good verse/chorus section, with double bass throughout, and the atmoshperic choir giving it all they have. At about 2:00, the song double times, and starts to get very cool. The keyboard solo rocks, i like it alot, as well as the guitar solo. No shredding going on in this track, very atmospheric with every note being audible.

Only one complaint with this track. It all sounds the same to me, and there isnt much diffrence in the guitar lines/drums or vocals throughout. I will check out some more though.

Bad Brains - No Conditions

OK it starts off with some high pitched, thick Jamaican accented singing of the title, the music is based on a pretty simple distorted sound, the bass is more of a funk-line though, I enjoy it, it all fits together quite well. The singer starts shoating, and I think he's singing in some other language, cause I can't understand a word, then he says "we worship (incoherent)" and then the band yells something in the background, at about 2:18 a solo starts, it's a pretty nice solo, then they bust out the worship part again, overall it's a nice short funk/punk song.

9/10 me loves bad brains (or at least what I've heard:thumb:)

Suicidal Tendencies - Cyco Vision (hardcore/punk)
INXS - Mistify (Rock)
Linkin Park - Pista Adio (Nu-Metal/Electronica)
Deftones - Back To School (Nu-Metal)
Celtic Frost - Fainted Eyes (Black Metal... I think)

That better u big bully?
