I once had an erection in an armour. That hurt.

StaticSynth 11-08-2007 11:20 AM

I always keep my erections in an armour.

Erection: L'anamour.

Robert Crumb 11-08-2007 01:00 PM

Also, Kind of Like Spitting is kinda boring. I thought I might like it because he's been compared to dudes I like, so I got the reissue of Hundred Dollar Room when it came out. But it's pretty lame.

poopie 11-08-2007 01:03 PM

i saw it recommended on Last.fm so i started downloading Bridges Worth Burning cuz AMG said it was his best album.. ive only listened to that one song but i liked it. they gave One Hundred Dollar Room a 2.5 and Bridges Worth Burning a 4.5, so maybe you heard the wrong album \_:confused:_/

Regnyouth is a good blog. Any point beside that?

I didn't think people here knew about it.
But AMG is pretty bad either way.
why is it bad?

Robert Crumb 11-08-2007 01:31 PM

I guess it's ok for info and all, but their ratings are all wacky. Part of it is because they rate on the basis of individual catalogues but also because they're screwballs.

Anxious 11-08-2007 01:54 PM

I like AMG for the "followers", "influences", and "see also" sections.

Also
Plus, Thurston is holding a copy of Patti Smith's Horses on the inside booklet and that's a terrible record.

Hey look! It's a special visit from Stephen Thomas Erlewine of All-Music Guide! "Hi, I'm Stephen Thomas Erlewine. I love every single album ever released. Now if you'll excuse me, Mark Prindle of Mark Prindle's Family Place, I have to return to my own record review web site, The All-Music Guide."

Here's something I very likely have discussed elsewhere on the site (because I think about it often), but it bears repeating over and over and over so here it is again:

Everywhere you go online these days, you'll see message boards wherein one person says something like "So-and-so album is a complete piece of ****," then somebody else inevitably replies along the lines of "What makes you think you know everything about music? You seem to think that your opinions are facts; you should really begin statements like that with 'In my opinion.'" This line of argument only annoys me because I see it come up time and time again. Look -- if a person makes a statement that is obviously an opinion (for example, "So-and-so album is a complete piece of ****"; unless the album under discussion is in fact comprised of feces, THIS IS OBVIOUSLY AN OPINION), and if this person does not attribute the stated opinion to a third party, then isn't it clear that it's just the speaker's opinion? Is the phrase "In my opinion" really necessary? It's not like somebody's going to say "In my opinion, Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota." A fact is a fact, a factual error is a factual error, and an opinion is an opinion. There is no need to qualify ANY of these, unless you're like two years old and honestly can't tell the difference yet. So up your ***, Internet prix.
poopie 11-08-2007 02:09 PM

that makes me feel stupid about trying to tell people to stop being objective about music

because hes right
Part of it is because they rate on the basis of individual catalogues
huh?

also most of the time, their ratings are generally pretty reliable for me

ewwwww i just searched a couple of my favorite bands to see if i'd agree with them, and they rated Reggatta de Blanc to be The Police's worst album! (though they did rate Zenyatta Mondatta five stars, and that is tied with Reggatta de Blanc as my favorite) but that's ridiculous. but now that i think of it, it's really hard for me to pick a "worst" album. honestly, i would say Ghost in the Machine is my least favorite. and the latter half of Synchronicity besides Murder By Numbers is pretty bleh too.. it's very CVS music to me

yup they rated 10,000 Hz Legend Air's worst album and Moon Safari the best, there's another check.

Pinback's Summer in Abaddon as the best album, another check. but they said Autumn of the Seraphs was better than Blue Screen Life, which i don't agree with. right now, at least.

Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You tied with Repetition as their best with 4.5 stars, but a check by Leaves Turn Inside You. yup.

A Dead Modernist 11-08-2007 02:58 PM

Kind of like Spitting aren't good imo

Neoteric 11-08-2007 03:06 PM

AMG makes my firefox crash.

poopie 11-08-2007 03:07 PM

i guess i'll find out whether i like them whenever i get to listen to Bridges Worth Burning

im still in class and i have a C++ test at 5 and then maybe

Bukowski 11-08-2007 03:09 PM

AMG gave Confusion is Sex 2/5 if I remember.

Mark Prindle gave it 10/10.

I'm with Mark!

Neoteric 11-08-2007 03:13 PM

10/10 is a bit much

but 2/5 is a bit low

Eliminator 11-08-2007 03:13 PM
huh?
how hard is it to understand

poopie 11-08-2007 03:15 PM

weird... the review made it sound really good, but youre right, its a 2/5

personally ive never heard it
Abrasive and archaic, theatrical and confrontational, Confusion Is Sex marks the opening strides that Sonic Youth made during their long slog through the American underground scene of the '80s. And yes, this album is underground if anything -- it's lo-fi to the point of tonal drabness, as the instruments seem to ring out in only one tone, that of screechy noise. Yet that tone in itself is part of the album's style, which is one of antithesis. The album isn't comprised of songs but rather soundscapes, while the instruments are your traditional guitar-bass-drums-vocals lineup but are performed most untraditionally. Taken as a whole, Confusion Is Sex is a spellbinding listen, especially the first time through. If you're a bona fide Sonic Youth fan, chances are you'll find it especially spellbinding -- the more of the band's albums you've heard, the better. However, if you're unfamiliar with the band, or a casual fan at most, chances are you're going to be thoroughly tested -- this is not an easy album to enjoy. As inaccessible as it may be, however, Confusion Is Sex is a cornerstone of Sonic Youth's career, their true opening salvo toward underground heroism, though miles and miles away from such highly regarded albums as Daydream Nation (1988) or Dirty (1992).

how hard is it to understand
i dont know what he means
10/10 is a bit much

Prindle's rating is nearer the mark, to me.

Allmusic often write reviews which make albums sound good, but then give it a bad rating. YDLoad posted one in some thread a while ago, I think it was a NoMeansNo album, where the reviewer wrote entirely positive remarks and gave it 2 or 3 out of 5.

Neoteric 11-08-2007 03:24 PM

Mark Prindle's interview with Steve Albini is fun.
While you're making the record, you're sort of prevented from appreciating it on that level because you can't allow yourself to be distracted by your enthusiasm and ignore problems as they come up. So you're sort of like a gynecologist in a sense. Like you're working up close and personal with a vagina but you really shouldn't allow yourself to get turned on by it, because you've got a job to do. You need to have a different relationship with the vagina. And it's the same way with music when you're in the studio, so it's only after you finish a record that you even can allow yourself to enjoy it as a fan.
A Dead Modernist 11-08-2007 03:34 PM

anyone like Pia Fraus or Oxes?

Time 11-08-2007 03:38 PM

What Tom Waits CD should I get after Rain Dogs (I already have most of Small Change, and I love them both)? Also what's the best starting place for Nick Cave?

Jawaharal 11-08-2007 04:01 PM

Get Orphans. 3 cds of whoop ***.

I see. Then it's a pretty good point.

Youngs 11-08-2007 04:28 PM

lost-in-thyme is better imo though. regnyouth is a bit too mainstream.
