I'll listen to GOP before any other song just because it does a good job of setting the tone for anything else. Its the one song that I wish didn't have any slow parts. It would have been nice to keep that pace the whole time. Sadly, that and Beneath the mire are the only GR songs im listning to constantly. Oh and BOTH.
Isolation Years has become my favorite on GR after GOP of course. |
Plus, I'm getting all my mates to come to that concert too, they don't really listen to Opeth all that much, if at all, but I'm sure they'll change their views and become fans.
Im trying to get one of my freinds to go. His extent of Metal knowledge is Slayer and Metallica. He's been wanting to get deeper into metal and I think taking him to the Opeth show would be a good way to start. |
the other day me and a buddy went into one of our local music stores, i was going to buy "morningrise" i have had all the songs for a long time, but out of respect to the band i figured i had to buy the album.
anyway as i picked it up some guy goes dude OPETH IS AMAZING, **** yes i replied, then across the room some guy goes ORCHID BABY. five opeth fans in one place coincidently? i felt like i was in a movie (none of them worked at the store)
Great to hear that Opeth has ensnared yet another listener. Which song was the first one to really get you into them? The first Opeth song that really got me hooked on them was Bleak. |

The Drapery Falls was the song that stuck with me in the early days. It's not really one of my favorites anymore though.

Ive always seen GR as having two separate 'sides', one good and one bad- one is a new sound that is almost like a pop death metal, an epic, progressive, heavy, yet commercial with soulful clean vocals- ex, GOP, the end of BotH, parts of BtM and Atonement, or Isolation Years. The other side is a duller and more blatantly commercial metal music that isn't terribly interesting or creative, and belongs on MTV2- ex, TGC and most of R/HF. I just hope they keep the better sound for the next album.

I mostly disagree. I don't see what's blatently commercial about Harlequin Forest at all, it's cleaner and the riffs arn't quite as interesting as a lot of Opeth, but the vocals more than make up for it, IMO, and are very interesting. I don't think the riffs are even THAT inferior, anyway, I don't think theres anything wrong with playing a vocal melody as a riff, but a lot of people do. It's the longest song on the album, it's not commercial. Ghost Reveries as an album has a more easy to digest sound than most Opeth, but commercial? I wouldn't go that far at all. I would say that that GoP, BotH and R/HF are the best songs on that album along with IY, BtM coming close behind with HoW then Atonement and TGC last, and so long as they don't go down the TGC route for their next album I'll be happy. |

 what I first thought was "omfg the intro is so...Arabic!"..the acoustic guitars give it that vibe. Still feckin' awesome. |

Don't you love Harmonic Minor scales. I know I do :thumb: |
Bleak was one of the songs that got me into heavy Opeth, along with The Drapery Falls.
Don't you love Harmonic Minor scales. I know I do :thumb:
So does every other unoriginal metal group. |

Hell yeah, buddy. So fun to play. Especially descending. |

That would be Melodic. |
That would be Melodic.
No, I know which is which, I just like playing harmonic minor runs descending. Just sounds cooler, I guess. |

oh ok. I like to screw around with the second half of the scale. |
oh ok. I like to screw around with the second half of the scale.
yeah, and those Yngwie-ish triplet runs are cool to, like this: |-15-13-12-------------------------- |-----------13-12-10---------------- |---------------------12-10-9------- |-----------------------------10-9-7 |------------------------------------ |------------------------------------ etc Either they're harmonic minor based, or I'm just an idiot. |
G F E C B A G F E C B A
It could be many things but I want to say its a descending A Melodic Minor. |
So does every other unoriginal metal group.
Well I just hit random things :( Now really whats some other really good scale. |
Well I just hit random things :(
Now really whats some other really good scale.
I take it you know your Blues Pentatonic. Try to incorporate Major scales. Harmonic Minor scale is very useful and not as confusing as a Melodic Minor scale.
So does every other unoriginal metal group.
So does every musician that plays a harmony in a minor scale. |
The Drapery Falls was the song that stuck with me in the early days. It's not really one of my favorites anymore though.
Yeah same with me. That and Blackwater Park convinced me to get the album. |
Yeah same with me. That and Blackwater Park convinced me to get the album.
Thats funny, cos Blackwater Park would have put me right off them straight away. I still don't like the song, it's one of the few Opeth songs I just don't like. |
Thats one of Opeths best, IMO. Top 3, easily.
|
So does every musician that plays a harmony in a minor scale.
No. You can play a harmony in natural minor scale. Harmonic minor scales are just used way too often in metal.
Now really whats some other really good scale.
Dorian is good for modern rock. Diminished is really good for death metal. Whole tone is cool too. Just some I'd like to reccomend. |

That's odd. I was surprised at how good it was last night. There are a few songs on Blackwater Park and some on Still Life that I genuinely dislike, but aside from that, I like every song. |
BWP is my favorite song at the moment.

Wow, I can't see disliking any songs on those albums...I rather dislike Master's Apprentices though (well the heavy part at the beginning anyway, though I love the acoustic part). |
I wish I got it, I really do. It's not like I don't like heavy Opeth, either, I mean, MAYH is probably my 4th favourite Opeth album out of the 8.

Man, that is one of the best simple riffs I've ever heard though. It's a hell of a lot of fun to play and listen to. I think BWP has the best and worst moments on the album. The best being the riff and Mikael's layered vocals at around 5 minutes, after the acoustic riff. The worst being the acoustic riff. |

I love every second of Master's Apprentices. People think I'm crazy for not liking everything from Still Life, but considering that The Moor, Godhead's Lament, and White Cluster are the only songs I really like from that album, it's easily my least favorite Opeth record. Blackwater Park I love, except Bleak I dislike. I used to hate every song on that album passed Dirge for November, but it really grew on me. NP: The Funeral Portrait |

I love playing along to that song. I also love the acoustic passage of that song. Realy good stuff. |
