What about The Master's Apprentices? I think that's the best song on the album.
Other than the acoustic part in the middle, that song doesn't do much for me. MAYH also isn't that great to me. And I have lots of love for Morningrise, but not Orchid so much. |
MAYH was the first Opeth Album I bought.
The first album i bought was Blackwater Park. The only one i dont have now is Ghost Reveries |
I love MAYH, it's definitely one of my favourite Opeth albums.

The Master's Apprentices is really one of their best songs.
MAYH is the earliest 'Peth album that I really appreciate. The intro to Karma is amazing.
Karma is my favorite Opeth song, hands down.
I dont know what the big hype over MAYH is...maybe I need to listen to it more, I really can't stand the Amen Corner though.
That song is great, really, I absolutely love it.
Woah woah woah, where's the love for Orchid and Morningrise?
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa .... Lois, this is not my Batman glass. I love them both, previous posts from me will prove it. |

Aside from Ghost Of Perdition, your not missing much. To me this album really doesn't sound like Opeth. A couple parts do but i think they were just trying something a little too different. |

It does sound like Opeth though because it is Opeth. Most of the songs are better live and there are some really cool moments on the album. It really grows on you especially after they play some of the songs live. Isolation Years is one of my favorite Opeth songs too. |
GR is at the top of my Opeth list. I love that album immensely. It has a much darker feel to it than past albums, which really reflects the occult theme.
|
Most of the songs are better live
That's true. The Grand Conjuration is a good song on the album, good not great. Live it was unbelievable. The clean sung sections build the tension so perfectly, and then the heavy sections just punish. |
MAYH is an amazing album, it's my Opeth album of the moment. After playing Ghost Reveries a lot and having that as my fav, then Still Life. Hearse has been the next one to fill the void. Deliverance couldn't quite cut it to the same level.
Damnation was actually the first I was obsessed with. Blackwater Park and Deliverance were both good, but as whole albums they don't satisfy me like the others I mentioned. Nor have Orchid or Morningrise satisfied me as full albums either. Still though, these "lesser" albums have some amazing songs on them. I think Opeths albums are in about this order for me now: Still Life Ghost Reveries Damnation My Arms, Your Hearse Blackwater Park Deliverance Morningrise Orchid Subject to change, I could yet fall in love with Deliverance or Orchid, or maybe get what the all the fuss is about over Blackwater Park as a title track, that could mess things up a bit. |
my order would be....
orchid/deliverance/still life then ghost reveries/damnation then my arms your hearse/morningrise then blackwater park slashes mean they switch around that level a lot |

Reverie/Harlequin Forest blows me right away, Imo that's a very good song. |
Baying of the Hounds is also a great song, along with Beneath the Mire.
|
Baying of the Hounds, Beneath the Mire, and Reverie/Harlequin Forest are my favorites. The clean singing in Reverie is unbelievably amazing.
|
I'm a huge MAYH fan. The Amen Corner took a long time to grow on me, but I love it now.
Ghost Of Perdition and Harlequin Forest are my faves off GR. |
Ghost Of Perdition and Reverie/Harlequin Forest are the better songs from Ghost Reveries. I enjoy them both.
|
I favor Ghost of Perdition and Baying of the Hounds....Beneath the Mire annoys the crap out of me until the very end of it there's one cool part...Atonement is nice but it doesn't do it for me like other soft Opeth songs do...R/HF is OK but I find a lot of the riffs really boring and some of the vocal melodies are just meh, not up to Mikael's standards really...Hours of Wealth is really nice except for the singing part grinds my nerves...TGC is cool but too repetetive...and Isolation Years is really nice, I like it.
|
TGC absolutely slays live though. Probably one of the best songs of the night.
|
It was good live, but that didn't change my opinion about the song. I still don't care for it.
|
It was really good live, I have to say. Plus, I'm enjoying it more on the album as well.
|
Of all their songs they played, The Amen Corner was by far the best.
|
You wanna hear something weird? Me and Flynn started listening to Black Rose Immortal at the exact same time.

Yeah, that was pretty crazy... |
I've come to the conclusion that anyone who doesn't absolutely love Master's Apprentices is a fool.

That be an excellent conclusion. Song is especially fun for scaring Asian girls in school hallways. |
I think the growling is cool in that song, and the mellow parts are pretty interesting, it's not one of my favourite Opeth songs though, maybe my 3rd fav on that album even. :p
Hey... has anyone got any Opeth videos or streams of them online? I'm at Uni and I can't use most programs to d/l videos and such here but I seem to be able to play streams, and straight up d/ls. Any full concerts would be awesome to watch, or individual songs. I've watched everything on youtube.com and I thirst for more. I'm watching the live set with Godheads Lament first, with Advent second at the moment. Someone (probably from in here) linked me to it a while back. |
That's the old standby here, and I don't think anyone has found anything similar.
If they have, they're holding out on us. |
There are some in you-tube, let me see what I can do for you:

I'm confused... :( |
Don't forget to edit: When is cut short, thus making it one of the worst videos ever.
|

I never understood that either. I don't like Atonement, so I never listen to the song, consequently I didn't even know the Reverie section existed. It wasn't until I looked at a GP tab of the entire song several days ago that I heard the intro and said, "woah, what is this first part? Is the file mislabeled?" Then I backed up into the end of Atonement and heard it. I'm glad they did it that way though, I don't like Reverie. It sounds very disturbing and doesn't fit the wonderful mood of Harlequin Forest. |
I love it.
BTW Cardboard I checked out your band...cool stuff! Sorry, I somehow missed all of your earlier plugs. |
