Anyone go the Nicko Mcbrain drum clinics in the UK last week? I went and got my Eddie bass drum head signed, he held it up to the audience when he spotted it. (I was on the second row). He played with a guitarist and bassist from the 'We Will Rock You' shows, they covered several Led Zep/Maiden/Jimi Hendrix songs. Brilliant night.

Deth 10-04-2005 03:12 PM

Where did you find an Eddie bass drum head? That sounds really cool.

Surtr 10-04-2005 03:17 PM

I got my mom to make me one outa yellow bristol board. I'm cool like that though.

Trev 10-04-2005 03:18 PM

Well basically I got a bass drum sticker from ebay (not as impressive as it sounds anymore eh?). But it doesn't look like a bass drum sticker. Here is a picture I took before the clinic with my crappy phone, but now it's signed and on my wall, I have photo's waiting to be developed of the clinic too.

But still both Nicko, the owner of the drum shop that hosted it, and the owner of Premier drums all commented on how good it looked, and how it was a good idea to do that. Absolutely amazing night, they opened with Led Zep - Moby Dick. Mind blowing.

chorbalan 10-04-2005 03:23 PM

Anybody have the rock in rio CDs to email me? I've looked all over the place to buy them and download them, but I can't find them.

Maiden is my favourite metal band and I lurk in this thread sometimes. I know a lot about them, but since I know **** all about anything drumming, I want to know how you guys think Nicko compares to other drummers (in an unbiased impartial opinion). By the sounds of it, he could be a really fast double bass drummer if he used them, but what does he have against them anyway?

He's got style, creativity, and he just generally puts good use to his kit for all his songs. His personality also goes along well with that.

i'm tempted to get that...except it doesn't have any cases or anything, so MAY not be genuine...and i can't be arsed to buy it now either.

He considers them 'un-drummerish', and generally just disagrees with using them. He is EXTREMELY good at single bass, he can play a lot of double bass stuff with one foot, as demonstrated at his clinic. But people just summarize his playing by his single bass skill, but his stickwork is absolutely amazing too, he blew me away at the clinic. I'd rate him higher than most metal drummers, plus he can play many different styles.

Shattered_Future 10-05-2005 10:18 AM

Nicko's possibly the greatest "lo-fi" (for lack of better term) metal drummer ever. He can do stuff that most people with like 3 or 4 pedals can't do.

He has to have a magic right foot...

I saw Death On The Road last night, but didn't buy it...I've never heard anything from Dance Of Death. Is DOTR any good?

I have Rock In Rio, and love it to death...are the 2 comparable?

if i'm right in saying Nicko has only used a double bass on Face In The Sand

Artemician 10-05-2005 10:30 AM

Yeah, he's only used a double-bass pedal in Face in the Sand. He hated using it so much that he promised to never do it again.

Trev 10-05-2005 10:37 AM
if i'm right in saying Nicko has only used a double bass on Face In The Sand
Yeah, because he couldn't keep up with it for 6 minutes, which isn't bad considering he was 51.
