Lookwise, they are both pretty good, but the music overall is terrible :-\
Nightwish, terrible? Josh, you have started talking outta your arse now.

Lacuna isn't talentet once you go past christina. Never the less, they rulez.

AA-12 04-03-2006 11:44 PM

Nah, I really do hate all of the music of both. Female vocals ruin it on top of that. Meh.

How's your Shecter?

repcak 04-04-2006 01:27 AM

i dislike female vocals ... such like in Lacuna Coil, Nightwish.

but i like female vocals in Arch Enemy, or in some songs of Anathema or even In Flames. sometimes they fit in very well.
though the main reason i dislike bands like LC and Nightwish is that its power metal and i don't like power metal, except some rhapsody :D

Invicta_Veritas 04-04-2006 01:31 AM

Since when is Lacuna Coil Power Metal?

LC is goth metal, last time I checked.

Invicta_Veritas 04-04-2006 01:58 AM

That's a little more along the lines of what I thought, although I actually do hate it when people use the word Goth so lightly as if it's a music or a style of dress.

metalhead_matt 04-04-2006 02:20 AM

lacuna coil are pretty **** IMO, but christina is super hot
and im glad tarja is out of nightwish, her voice grates

Maybe you just haven't been exposed to the right stuff...

repcak 04-04-2006 06:19 AM

i for myself don't like power metal because of the singing. its the same as Dream Theater .... the instruments, the music is great, but the singer ... >

So metal has to be filled with death growls?

kurrpt 04-04-2006 07:12 AM

yea, i wouldnt say the labrie/dragon force vocals appealed to me at first, but after seeing symphony X live, i respected them a hellova lot more.

I believe growling requires 0 talent, and vocals like the ones mentioned above have to actually approach their voice as their instrument.

repcak 04-04-2006 07:44 AM
So metal has to be filled with death growls?
exactly :thumb:

no, not always. i like for example sentenced and other bands who doesn't growl. i doesn't have anything about clean singing, but the problem in power metal is that most of them sing very very high! rhapsody f.e. is power metal but the vocals are great i like them. the vocals of sentenced (though its goth-metal not power) are one of my favourites!! when the singer in power metal bands would sing "normally" i would listen to them, but most of them sing far too high.

Dude...have you ever tried doing a death growl? It's definitely not talentless, and after having to do vocals for a band, I respect screamers a helluva lot more. It's difficult!

no, i definitely wouldnt call it anything special. Now granted, my voice totally sucks for something like that, but you have to figure, growls are monotone in nature. Its not like they warm up by growling scales, or what have you, nor do they raise octaves in the same manner.

listen to some opeth

kurrpt 04-04-2006 07:55 AM

i did, i dont like em

Apocalyptic Raids 04-04-2006 08:04 AM

I think growls are something people simply grow to like.

Some bands I suppose could be considered as having "entry-level" growls like Bodom or In Flames, but it's something that people need to ease into.

I have to practice for at least a half hour every day to keep the tone in my growl. It's DEFINITELY not a monotone...have you heard Mikael Akerfeldt do a wordless growl? He can go from octave to octave to octave to octave without even drawing a breath. I really do see where you're coming from in saying that it is a talentless art, but I think that opinion is naive and ill-informed. Just TRY to do sing along to an Opeth song and tell me growling takes no talent.

It's a fact that it requires a lot of talent.

Amazing. I can't seem to put it down. I love the low B so much.

i just think some people are pre-disposed to be able to growl is all. I feel theres more talent involved when talking about someones voice, like Mariah Carey, when compared to growls, regardless of the music they do of course

Cob are power metal.]

edit: for the record, growls take immense talent.

AA-12 04-04-2006 10:02 AM

He meant standard power metal with clean/higher pitch vocals though, I believe.

extreme power metal to be exact -> power metal with harsh vocals; and when you will read my previous postings you will realize that the only thing about power metal i dislike is the high pitched singing.

EDIT: Necromonicon is right; i mean standard power metal

Squirrel 04-04-2006 10:16 AM

I know, i read, i just felt like pointing that out.

lmao @ extreme power metal.

It's a legitimate genre...and it's basically the agreed classification for bands like Children of Bodom and Kalmah (pre-Black Waltz).

says who? Oh so because of the neo-classical presence and keyboards, they are automatically powermetal? No harshness intended... im just curious as to why people are always so quick to call them powermetal:)
Not that it matters... why do people care so much about what type of genre a band is labelled as.
COB are kick *** metal and thats good enough for me.

The rhythm riffs are extremely power metal, as well as the percussion. I realize that there are plenty non-power metal bands with keyboards *cough* Emperor, Dark Tranquillity, Coprofago *cough*

We care about genres because we are dumb, is that what you wanted to hear? I never criticized you for failing to categorize your music further than just metal, so what gives you the right to grate on me for being a genre whore?

Matas 04-04-2006 12:38 PM

NP: Are you dead, yet (the whole album)

the reason why most ppl dislike "Are you dead, yet?" is maybe not because CoB changed their style, cause the guitar-work is still very impressive and nice. its the drumming! the drums sounds strange... like the drums in St.Anger by Metallica.
what do you think`?

kurrpt 04-04-2006 12:56 PM

anyone read the interview in the new Guitar World with alexi laiho..

he actually retracted the BS he said about john petrucci, and stated that jon was better than he was. My respect for him shot up 2 pts after reading that :thumb:

Well the drums do sound strange for ''In Your Face''. during the verse, they reminded me of the St.Anger drums.

Personally, I think the album isnt good because of the guitar sound, the vocals (older ones were much better). Also, I dont like where they're going with the sloppiness of the bass. Example: in If You Want Peace Prepare for War and Bastards of Bodom.
its still better than lots of other crap out there though.
