Do you find yourself not believing people when they tell you they like something? I'm crippled by that. I convince myself they're just being polite, and I'm not confident enough in it to know it's good on my own.

I don't know, I just figure if I don't like it they shouldn't either. But then again, I really don't care what people say anyway. I make music just for the sake of making it.

JonM 08-16-2005 12:27 AM

I'd like that to be true for me, but it always feels unfinished to me if its unappreciated, either by people (or me) not liking it or because I don't play it for anyone.

The NPC 08-16-2005 12:33 AM

Well I guess I've developed that mentality because I play live on street corners and such. You just jam away and basically say, musically of couse, "fuck off" to everyone. Oh well, that's just how I am. My music is take it or leave it.

JonM 08-16-2005 12:39 AM

I played on a street corner one time, and it was really amazing, actually. I should try that again. It was in Providence at 3 AM, not at home, and since I'll be living there in 2 weeks, I should go to the same spot. My friend and I made $9 each, and we were only out there for about an hour.

Ah, I never accept money from anyone. I have a job and I don't need people's money. They can enjoy a free live show, too me that's cool.

JonM 08-16-2005 12:54 AM

Well, they gave it to me voluntarily, so it was fine by me.

I'm jeopardizing my immune system by fucking with my sleep patterns, and the Lali Puna album is over, so I'm off to bed. Nice chatting with you, NPC.
Does any band have better song titles than The Flaming Lips?

A.C. doesn't count of course, they're not even in the same LEAGUE :)
I think not.

So, as of this September, my older sister and neighbor/my best friend for the last eight years are moving away. It sucks.

Zmev 08-16-2005 10:44 AM

Have you ever walked home feeling sticky?

I hate that feeling.

A Goonie 08-16-2005 10:48 AM

stickiness can be bad

I do all of my masterbating at home, so not really
Ah, I never listen to any of the music I've created or been a part of. The same goes for all the film work I've done and the things I've written. You must like some of your own stuff. I could never give people my music unless I like it myself. Enjoying your own music is more important than anything else I believe.

Iai 08-16-2005 11:12 AM

Greta, in that picture of you from a couple years ago, were you trying to look like Liz Phair on the cover of Exile In Guyville?

Honesty I can't think of anything that I "like". It's just how I am I suppose. I'll make music because it's a release from everything else. But I've never been one to listen to the music I've produced or been a part of. That's why I think it's weird when people say they like the stuff I create and so on.

I'm like that too. I'm proud that I know I can make music of a certain standard, but until I make something that I would go out and buy myself I won't be satisfied.

/unless im completely missunderstanding you.

Hmm, not exactly.

Happymeal 08-16-2005 07:36 PM

Assembling bookshelves by yourself is fun.

JonM 08-16-2005 10:35 PM

Hi, Snidget.

snidget 08-16-2005 10:35 PM

(cont. from YSI thread)

Is that Elvis' place?

Iai 08-16-2005 10:43 PM

For the second time in 3 days, I am staying up all night so that I'm not late for work, and am not tempted to bunk.

It's now 5.42am here. Cool.

JonM 08-16-2005 10:43 PM

Sure is. I also went to Sun Studios while I was there. And I also smoked pot with my uncle.

nice

So I'm in a death metal band now.
We're a two piece (guitar/cowbell duo) called "Cannibal Mage"

The plan is to write a concept album about the lameset concept ever.

We actually are going to have more instruments on record than those two, but when we play live, we'll use a drum machine and have like 2 minute drum solos...from a machine.

I can see us blowing up

JonM 08-16-2005 10:49 PM

That's an incredible name, and an even more incredible concept. I can't wait to hear the results.

I'd have some music of my own to share if my whole life as I know it wasn't restarting from scratch as I sit and watch helplessly.

snidget 08-16-2005 10:53 PM

Well, If you have that second song ready (or just the instrumental), I'd love to hear it.

I'm glad you like the name/concept, btw, if anyone wants to do the logo/art for a death metal band called "Cannibal Mage", lemme know

Zappa 08-16-2005 10:57 PM

Making fun of Death metal will only work if you have a sincere appreciation and knowledge of the genre. I think all parody works like that, though.

snidget 08-16-2005 10:58 PM

we're not making fun of it, We just want to rock...hard...and talk about death

Zmev 08-16-2005 11:22 PM
we're not making fun of it, We just want to rock...hard...and talk about death

Yea yea bullshit factory line one.
 Seriously, we're a band conjured up by the Cannibal Mage to inform the modern world about his antics in the old world. It won't sound too much like Metal, and there won't be too much death, but we're taking up the badass persona. That's all there is to it

masada 08-16-2005 11:37 PM

Were capes and paint your faces white, with lots of black eyeliner.

And then play "The Safety Dance" for 20 minutes.

snidget 08-16-2005 11:42 PM

Actually, that's the best part, I forgot.

I get to wear a Sergeant Pepper's outfit!

YDload 08-16-2005 11:55 PM

yeah yeah yeah GIVE UP NOW

Zappa is a genius.

So I just found out there's a thread in R&M that namedrops me specifically as a great user, and that's why my rep was changed. Cool.

Zappa 08-17-2005 12:23 AM

In other news I just wrote a sort of European dance sounding tune inspired a Pavane by Gabriel Faure that I'm playing with the City Band.

Iai 08-17-2005 12:28 AM

I like Faure's stuff. One of the better composers I studied.

Zappa 08-17-2005 12:32 AM

I'd never heard anything by him until tonight (which was the rehearsal for this week's concert). I expressed my enjoyment of his Pavane to my mother, and she said that she also likes his work. I'll have to investigate.

Did you use any directions?

I assembled a desk and a chair once.
