Is there any point to gigging with a rig that size? I mean, realistically?

fatbandit 06-15-2010 07:51 AM

I've never felt like I needed more than my Schroeder 2x12 and a decent powered head so far, with or without PA support.

There's not really any less point to gigging with a rig that size than there is to playing bass at all, I guess.

In some of the venues we used to play, it really came in handy.

1. Some of them were rather large and had terrible PA systems (or just non-working cables/mixers/etc). On numerous occasions, the sound guy was able to put the entire band through the PA except the bass, so I had to fill the room by myself and fight over two guitarists and a loud drummer.

2. Raising the 4x10 up to ear level is amazingly useful as a monitor on stage.

I suppose. I've never had an issue with my 3x10, even with two guitars and a drummer.

BenJammin 06-15-2010 06:50 PM

I've got a new song. It sucks, like all of my other ones. Go listen to it and tell me that I'm untalented and should kill myself.

In my defense, our music was considerably louder and heavier than yours. Also, as I said, there were also many cases where I was the only thing NOT running through the PA.

I'll do shrooms tomorrow and let you know how it is.

Quit fishing for compliments you frail f*ck. Seriously though, I enjoyed it, but that's mainly because I love weird **** that sounds like when John Frusciante just stopped doing heroin (which that reminds me of). Good work. How did you do the drums?

I learned today that rhythm is a bitch to get right when you're recording a bass. I should have the song I was working on ready sometime this week for you guys to tear apart and stuff.

Sablate McNuff 06-15-2010 10:06 PM

Castillo, you're a guitarist. GTFO my forum and go talk about distortion somewhere.

Castillo 06-15-2010 10:08 PM

No. I'm a bassist now too. I can do everything but drums.

burtonbassist_102 06-16-2010 03:00 AM

Going to see 311 on Saturday. I'm fukcing stoked.

 Thanks.

The drums are half hand programmed, and half modified samples.

Is there a program you have that helped you with that? I'm have a drum machine that works well for songs that are in 4/4 but for songs that are in 6/8 or something I've been stuck with messing with guitarpro which doesn't always deliver. And I don't have the $300+ to pay for all of the mics and stuff to record a real life drummer.

fatbandit 06-16-2010 10:33 AM

Do you have a copy of Cubase? There are a lot of decent programs for it, but that's REALLY easy to use for programming MIDI drums, and then you can just run them through better sounding VSTs and stuff if you want them to sound better.

Castillo 06-16-2010 10:38 AM

I do not. Any idea where I could get this?

FlamingCouch 06-16-2010 10:38 AM

Gentlemen,

I ask a question partially directed at Ben and FMB as they both had pretty decent answers that made good sense when I asked it prior.

Anyways, ahem.

Remember when I asked about the hole in the body, and both of you essentially said "Yeah, it's used basically as a guide for Fender's cutting machines, it's standard on all the newer basses"? Well, I'm in talks with a friend of mine about building/custom/modding a project bass of sorts, and there's a Mexi Jazz on teh internets for sale for a decent price. Thing is, it's got that hole, and I want to have a pickguard-less body on this thing. I just think it would look kinda goofy with that hole, so seeing as I plan on sanding down any body I buy should it be painted, is it possible to fill that hole in effectively, so to speak? Or is it more trouble than it's worth.

a bit of info on the project... I want to buy a P-Bass neck and de-fret it, a J or P body (either way goes) and then stick an active Stingray pickup in it. maybe a second pickup if I feel like jerking around, but I usually keep it pretty simple.

anyways, any info or personal stories would be awesome.

Also, yeah we've got the modding forum and whatnot but being that this is in baby steps I didn't really think it merited posting into a new thread yet. Plus everyone reads the casual anyways.

You've got two options, and neither is easier than the other.

1. Wood Laminate. This method is particularly useful if you decide to go with a translucent color and burst of some sort as it will show the wood grain. To do this, you just have to cut a piece the size of the body and glue it on. It will cover the hole, pickguard screws, and the huge (unecessary) route on the MIM neck pickups. The issue, however, is that, with the contours in the body, it's going to be tough.

2. Bondo + scrap wood. This is a technique I use with decent results. I cut a scrap piece of wood (or a few scrap pieces) and use them to plug the hole. Mix the bondo, toss a heaping amount in the hole, shove the cut pieces into the hole so that the excess bondo runs out the sides, and then wipe it away so that there is only a small amount still sticking up through the cracks. All that you have to do is wait 24+ hours and sand it down. The bad part, however, is that, unless you do a great job smoothing the whole body out, the lump will be visible. Also, Bondo is some tough stuff to sand through. It clogs sandpaper like no other.

hmm... doesn't sound too shabby. I've done loads of carpentry over the years (I love working with wood :naughty:) so #2 doesn't sound like a bad choice at all. and yeah, Bondo is an absolute pain in the ace to sand down, I've worked with it before on automotive projects. But those are some pretty wicked solutions.

I may just buy an allparts body with no routing and then re-rout it to fit a stingray p/u, seeing as I'll most likely have to rout out the back for nuff space for the EQ and such. I'll see what my confidant has to say about it.

Thankya FMB, you are the definitive man.

anyone else with ideas/tips/solutions/pizza is welcome to add to the pile!

fatbandit 06-16-2010 01:57 PM

I'd look for some dowel the right size, and glue it in with wood glue or something. Use wood filler to fill the gaps, and then sand it all flush. You'd have to have a solid finish over it, but it would work.

FlamingCouch 06-16-2010 02:30 PM

Another good suggestion, right on!

Yeah doweling would definitely work for the hole anyway. I'm probably going to end up painting the bass white so I'm not too worried about the finish. I'm pretty sure I can make the woods gel pretty well too, so long as they're matched close enough.

EDIT: Yippee-kay-yay. 900th post.

Need some opinions for this tone I'm going for the collab in the guitar forum.

Spaceman Spiff 06-18-2010 12:18 AM

Iggy Pop and the Stooges are playing a free show here on Saturday. I might need to check that out.

FlamingCouch 06-18-2010 09:18 AM

Ohhohohohoh, should you see that show you best elbow your way to Watt through the crowd and tell him he's Jah, he's a dartboard, his sex is disease and he's a stop sign.

Minutemen are the tits.

Spaceman Spiff 06-18-2010 09:21 AM

I've never actually listened to much Minutemen.

Where should I start? How much material do they have?

fatbandit 06-18-2010 10:30 AM

Finally got round to finishing SotC today. The 16th colossus took me ages to work out. Ugh. I think the end really tied it together for me. I feel so sorry for Mono! :( Discovered that if you leave it on the title screen too, it will cut to a hawk or Agro just flying or galloping around the Forbidden Land at random while the camera follows them. I thought it was quite neat :)
