Yep, I need to buy some albums. And big headphones for college, although some kids at my school who are also musicians and I are going to the same university, so we may share music and all that jazz. Yeah. School-
I need info on Damnation/Deliverance. The two were written together as a double album weren't they? I thought I remembered reading background info on th making of them, but I can't find it.
Yes. Well, no. As they were recording, they had a lot of heavy parts, and a lot of acoustic parts that didn't really fit the rest of the stuff, so someone (that's not mentioned, I think) came up with the idea of making 2 albums, a mellow one and a heavy, but not precisely a "double album". Just two different albums.
Tojes, how much was Orchid when you saw it ?

Thats pretty cool, Dunkelheit. I want a Still Life shirt.
It was 20-21 dollars, more or less. The rest were like $24-$26.

Darkness 03-09-2006 06:52 PM

^Yeah, but Mikael had wanted to do that idea since the 90s, it was only then that they had the support they needed to actually do the 2 albums.

Stormrider 03-09-2006 06:55 PM
It was 20-21 dollars, more or less. The rest were like $24-$26.
Ah lucky. I would have gotten the album a long time ago if it was that price. It;s 30.99 here :-/

So I guess I'll be ordering it.

Kaiwaz 03-09-2006 07:10 PM
Yeah, so Opeth was incredible last night. Mikael was a little sick, and at first his clean vocals sounded a bit off, but then he really picked it up, and it was incredible...

I was crushed the whole time between moshers and people just pushing. Normally, I loath being pushed around, but this time, I actually liked having my ribs get crushed. It was awesome, the setlist was the same as the rest, and it was a lot better then I thought it was going to be. My bassist took this giant 7x6 bed sheet and painted the Opeth O on it, and it looked awesome. So we managed to get it in (after a little stint with a security guard) and we got someone (who wasn't a minor) to go up onto the balcony and then hang it off facing the band. Mikael saw it, and was something like "Oh! thats very nice! You know, thats not the Swedish flag..." and then went on to talk about how most Swede's don't care about patriotism at all. It was pretty good. There was some other funny stuff, but I don't feel like getting into it.

Dark Tranquil also rocked my ass off, they all kept reaching out the crowd and stuff, and I touched there hands a couple times. We just went and played arcades during Devil Driver... They had big pits, but I wasn't interested in that at all.

I also bought a Still Life shirt, which is awesome. And today, at the mall, I went to the CD store I get everything from. And they had Still Life in stock... they never have anything pre BWP! So I bought it.. for 16 bucks! They also had Orchid, for 26 bucks, but I had it already anyway...
That's awesome, too bad you missed DevilDriver though. So what song did Opeth play last?

Darkness 03-09-2006 07:15 PM

I watched a bit of DevilDriver... just wasn't interested. Opeth encored with Deliverance. Which Mikael made us cheer for like 5 min before he finally said "fine, we'll play.. but we don't want to bore you"

Deth 03-09-2006 07:28 PM

I wish they had Still Life shirts when I went to my show. I have a nice GR one with the Devil being summoned though.

Shattered_Future 03-09-2006 07:40 PM

I bought a Still Live shirt. It's unbelievably sexy.

Shadows 03-09-2006 07:41 PM

I can't believe I never liked Deliverance before. Every single song on this album is amazing. It does have some of their heaviest moments, but it has much more than that.

Deth 03-09-2006 07:44 PM

Yeah, it's a sweet album. A Fair Judgement is one of my favorite Opeth songs.

NP: Deliverance \m/

Shattered_Future 03-09-2006 07:45 PM

Deliverance still bores me a bit, though the last 3 minutes or so of it were one of the coolest concert experiences ever. Almost nonstop headbanging.

Master's Apprentices, though, is teh secks.

Shadows 03-09-2006 07:46 PM

A Fair Judgement, For Absent Friends, and Master's Apprentices are probably my favorites. Although Wreath, Deliverance, and By the Pain I See in Others have are nothing to ignore. I must buy this album.

eighty d 03-09-2006 07:49 PM

Deliverance is an amazing album and I don't know why Opeth fans don't rate it higher. The title song itself has some of the most incredible parts of any Opeth songs, so many changes in mood. And that clean vocal part "the piercing sounds you make..."

Stormrider 03-09-2006 07:50 PM

I wasn't very into A Fair Judgement the last time I listened to it...which was a while ago. I'de have to listen to it again.

Darkness 03-09-2006 08:46 PM

Dilverance is indeed one of my favorite Opeth albums. I also think every song is awesome.

TojesDolan 03-09-2006 09:00 PM
^Yeah, but Mikael had wanted to do that idea since the 90s, it was only then that they had the support they needed to actually do the 2 albums.
Ah yes. Well he needed support to make an album that resembled to his 60's-70's influences. I'd really like to know what are the exact names. I've heard Camel for "Ending credits"... but I can't find the song he based it on... -___-

Kaiwaz 03-09-2006 09:05 PM

Oh yeah man, I love Deliverance. I can still remember a long time ago when quite a few people in this thread trashed it, but I always stuck up for it. It's Opeth's 2nd heaviest album IMO.

Shadows 03-09-2006 09:06 PM

What's their first?

Darkness 03-09-2006 09:07 PM

The Hearse, probably. I still think Deliverance may be a bit heavier though...

TojesDolan 03-09-2006 09:08 PM

Nope, Still Life for the win.

Kaiwaz 03-09-2006 09:08 PM
What's their first?
My Arms, Your Hearse I think.

Darkness 03-09-2006 09:10 PM
Nope, Still Life for the win.
For heaviest? Are you mad?!

Shadows 03-09-2006 09:10 PM

You might be right. The way When comes crashing in after that clean intro - very brutal. I'd say Deliverance is close though.

TojesDolan 03-09-2006 09:14 PM

Despite it has some of the softest by Opeth (Benighted and Face of Melinda, c'mon) It also has way more heavy stuff.

And My arms, your hearse.... eh it has it's moments, but I don't know.

I still have to make some serious considerations.

For real. Oh wait, Deliverance has very, very counted acoustic moments. Even less than MAYH.

Kaiwaz 03-09-2006 09:14 PM
You might be right. The way When comes crashing in after that clean intro - very brutal. I'd say Deliverance is close though.
Yeah they are real close. Although, Deliverance is lacking in the area of the fierce double kick that MAYH has, and all out screaming, the riffs and growls on Deliverance make up for it. I think MAYH has some of the most twisted and evil riffs I've ever heard. Superb guitar work by Akerfeldt, including bass.

Darkness 03-09-2006 09:16 PM

I think the druming is pretty fierce on Deliverance, I'm sure you all know Wreath. And that first Chorus to By the Pain I see In Others is crazy heavy.

Kaiwaz 03-09-2006 09:22 PM

Definitely, Wreath has some extremely heavy moments in it, and expecially By The Pain I See In Others. When comparing MAYH and Deliverance, I really do think MAYH is heavier, not by far though...as once I've stated Deliverance as Opeth's heaviest album in my own words. Dealing with the Hearse, every song except Prologue, Madrigal, Credence, and Epilogue have heavy attributes, especially Karma. That song is so lethal, love how it ends. That's one of Opeth's heaviest moments, IMO.

Crysiss 03-09-2006 09:23 PM

Deliverance to me is more straight up metal than anything else by opeth. Using E as a pedal tone in the intro, more power chords in this song than most, Tight rhythms and sweet solos.
The first song i liked by opeth

I absolutely love Deliverance. It's a great song to listen to every day, and not get sick of. It's a perfect title track, definitely my favorite title track of all bands/songs.

Shadows 03-09-2006 09:30 PM

Wreath has some pretty badass heavy metal shredding though, I almost starting drooling when I heard it.

Crysiss 03-09-2006 09:32 PM

I was recently wondering what Mikaels most wanker moments was. Possibly the solo in the grand conjuration.

Yea deliverance is awesome, i can listen to the song constantly, that goes for the whole album too.
I just started getting sick of listening to morningrise recently. But my favorite moment of morningrise is in Nectar, when it goes acoustic. I absolutely love that part.
