try to sing from your gut, and lift your soft pallet when you singing. It will create a thick and more heady tone. Trying to sing in an operatic tone will help you trying to get a fuller tone.
You can't really get the operatic tone by trying though, you can find it but it takes alot of exploration in your own voice or have a vocal teacher coach you.

Definately sing with your gut though.
Get vocal lessons. It'll help your tone, pitch control and range and singing in general along with making your voice stronger. Anyone can benefit from vocal lessons.
I'd love to, but I'm far too self-conscious. I'd even be embarrassed to ask my parents.

I have a great falsetto (I think), but I have a terribly weak-sounding head voice.. my falsetto is actually stronger and thicker than my head voice.

Sing from the bottom of your gut. Also try the vocal lessons in the Jam Session section of the forums.

I've been checking those lessons out for the past few months, actually. Merkaba is quite the teacher. I'd be able to use his lessons more effectively if I had more practice time.. the only time I can really belt it is when no one else is home, which is almost never.

You're a star, man! Brilliant.

And thanks Toaster, for offering.

I've come to the conclusion that Opeth is a really good band.

By the Pain I See in Others ftw

Just got back from the show. Devildriver kicked the hell outta DT and possibly Opeth, no wonder they played after them, absolutely brutal and they were filming for the live DVD so people were going insane. Not one person had any respect for the security gaurds, I guess one guy pissed them off so much they beat him down and tossed him in a puddle outside, pretty rank. Opeth was good, my neck hurt so much it was kinda hard to enjoy them, they played:
Ghost Of Perdition
White Cluster
The Amen Corner
Baying Of The Hounds
Closure
Under The Weeping Moon
The Grand Conjuration(Still awful)
The Drapery Falls
Demon Of The Fall

The drumming was more than excellent, They definately found a very good replacement for Lopez on this tour. Imo DevilDriver stole the show though, they had the most raw energy and kept everything going at all times, Dez has very good stage presence. At one point Dez looked at the security gaurds that were standing up on the railing catching the crowd surfers getting in the way, and Dez looks at them and says "You mind getting the F uck outta the way so I can interact with the fans, It's a free country boys, They sure didnt seem to like that anyway. All in all it was a good night, except for all the 13/14 year olds who thought they were so hardcore there.

I told you man, they kick major ass live. Dez is cool as hell. I wouldn't mind seeing them for a 3rd time.

Demon Of The Fall huh, you lucky ......

gmoneyguy 03-08-2006 10:12 PM

I can't wait until the 19th its going to rock so fucking hard

Det_Nosnip 03-08-2006 10:20 PM
I can pull of Dark Tranquillity style vocals as well as the less intense growls (The Moor and stuff) decently. My clean voice isn't anything to write home about though.
Wow, nice. Stanne has a really unique growling style, especially on the later albums.

Killtacular 03-08-2006 10:25 PM

What's the deal with Lopez, nowadays?

Is he still dealing with that cocai.... blood disease?

ya I seen DD last year at Sotu but they had a smaller set and it was in a bigger stadium and last night we were in a nightclub called the Odeon and it wasnt the nicest place ive ever seen for a show, nice high balcony where you could watch and drink/relax, and another "middle floor" where you could stand n watch or the pit on the lower level of stairs down and it was made very nice, couldnt of asked for anything better. I was 3 people behind the gaurdrail on the left so i was like 4 feet away from the guitarists all the time, man I watched the bald guitar from Dd and he just hammerred out the whole time, he got real into it, I love when bands get right into it like the fans. I was suprised at how talented their drummer is, they had a delay before the set started and they couldnt get all the drums to sound right so, took them like 20 minutes to get them all sounding nice, but he was busting out some nice beats on em while he was waiting. I cant wait for another Devildriver show, I will definately be right in there. As for Opeth again, Everytime the band would stop in between songs, everyone was screaming Demon of the fall, everytime. And then they said last song, drapery falls, then they left for a bit and came back and said i guess we will play another song for you, and he just used this insane scream and said Demon, waited a few seconds and said of the fall. I dunno, i got the craziest adrenaline rush ever when he said that. Was anyone else in Saskatoon that night?

Moses 03-08-2006 11:08 PM

I don't like Devildriver's music but they definately have an awesome live show. However, Opeth were the stars at the show I saw. They just molded the audience.

Slapping Penguin 03-09-2006 12:37 AM
Yeah the band sounds really great but the vocals kinda ruins stuff a little for me. Maybe I'll get used to it over time.
At first you will hate it, then you will love them. Opeth got me into harsh vocals.

Shadows 03-09-2006 01:34 PM

I'm going to attempt to get a friend into harsh vocals with Opeth. He developed a liking for progressive when he realized he worships Dream Theater, so I'm going to ease him into growling/screaming with some sweet, sweet Opeth.

The question is what albums to get him.

Stormrider 03-09-2006 01:45 PM

Ben, I read on the last page that you now had every Opeth album...but didn't like just a few days ago only have 2 ?

Meh, if you got them all fast, cool.

Shadows 03-09-2006 01:47 PM

I've bought two of them and have the rest downloaded. I'll be buying the rest as soon as I have money though, I'd rather support the band than strictly pirate.

Shadius 03-09-2006 01:54 PM

I actually adore Michael's growls now, and they used to give me a headache. it's brilliant.

Anyway, I've been listening to a lot of My Arms, Your Hearse lately and I'm really starting to love this album. The atmosphere is brilliant, and the riffs are damn good, it has a lot of energy in it when you get used to it. I think the reason I didn't used to like it as much was because the clean parts arn't quite as catchy/good or as frequent as in Still Life, yet after listening to this album a few times, it has some amazing parts, and is pretty consistant too.

Does anyone else think that Opeth's older albums have more atmosphere somehow?

Actually, what I mean is, Deliverance dosn't really have much atmosphere compared to all the releases before it. I really love the overall feel of the albums from MAYH-Blackwater Park, even Ghost Reveries has a creepy atmosphere. Deliverance though... I don't know, it just seems a lot more straightforward and like a collection of songs rather than an album - which is odd considering Opeth's back catalogue.

I do not own any downloaded albums :) Don't plan on doing that either.

I agree with all of that! Mikael is probably my favorite metal vocalist. He can sing, scream, and growl better than anyone I've ever heard in the genre.

Lately I've really been into My Arms, Your Hearse as well with a little Blackwater Park and Deliverance on the side. I noticed that they really progressed on that album. There was more clean singing, more clean guitar parts, and the growling was taken up a few notches. The songs were unusually short, but I could listen to When, April Ethereal, and Demon of the Fall over and over.

I think all of their albums have amazing atmosphere, but older stuff differently than the new. While listening to Orchid I heard a kind of amazing simplicity about it. The music was not as dynamic as it is now in many ways, but it was more progressive. The acoustic sections were very memorable and had a kind of folkish/dreamlike atmosphere that's hard to put into words.

The music now is almost frightening. Per's keyboards on Ghost Reveries sound very creepy and really reflect the occult themes of the album. when I first heard the album I thought it fit nicely with the rest of their work, but listening to it closely I can tell that it's really very different for them.

I think Deliverance has atmosphere, but not at all like the other ones. Wreath and Deliverance both have a very menacing tone about them, as well as Mikael's voice (like the growling in By the Pain I See in Others). Damnation and Deliverance were both much darker than their other albums.

Holy hell, I could write an essay on this band.

I have too many. :( I try and buy the CDs that I can but otherwise (They are horribly overpriced) I download for about £1 per album which is cool. About 65% of my collection is actual CDs.

Shadows 03-09-2006 05:08 PM

I need info on Damnation/Deliverance. The two were written together as a double album weren't they? I thought I remembered reading background info on th making of them, but I can't find it.

Crysiss 03-09-2006 05:11 PM

Well, if your willing to buy lamentations, theres a documentary on the making of the albums. I was very intrigued when i watched, hell I still pop it into my dvd player once a month or so.

Shadows 03-09-2006 05:20 PM

I plan on buying it sooner or later, but I was hoping to do some writing about it, and I'm trying to make it interesting. :(

Reading through Chapter X of Opeth's bio, Mikael seems pretty pissed off about being called a sellout by fans after signing to Roadrunner. Man, I've never heard of such an insulted musician. I can't say I blame him though.

Cardboard Headgear 03-09-2006 05:25 PM

Since people are talking about vocals n such, here's a clip of some of mine from my band Successor. Mixing's being finished today hopefully, so there'll be some full songs for me to shove down everyone's throat soon.

Darkness 03-09-2006 05:28 PM

Yeah, so Opeth was incredible last night. Mikael was a little sick, and at first his clean vocals sounded a bit off, but then he really picked it up, and it was incredible...

I was crushed the whole time between moshers and people just pushing. Normally, I loath being pushed around, but this time, I actually liked having my ribs get crushed. It was awesome, the setlist was the same as the rest, and it was a lot better then I thought it was going to be. My bassist took this giant 7x6 bed sheet and painted the Opeth O on it, and it looked awesome. So we managed to get it in (after a little stint with a security guard) and we got someone (who wasn't a minor) to go up onto the balcony and then hang it off facing the band. Mikael saw it, and was something like "Oh! thats very nice! You know, thats not the Swedish flag..." and then went on to talk about how most Swede's don't care about patriotism at all. It was pretty good. There was some other funny stuff, but I don't feel like getting into it.

Dark Tranquil also rocked my ass off, they all kept reaching out the crowd and stuff, and I touched there hands a couple times. We just went and played arcades during Devil Driver... They had big pits, but I wasn't interested in that at all.

I also bought a Still Life shirt, which is awesome. And today, at the mall, I went to the CD store I get everything from. And they had Still Life in stock... they never have anything pre BWP! So I bought it.. for 16 bucks! They also had Orchid, for 26 bucks, but I had it already anyway...

TojesDolan 03-09-2006 06:43 PM

Good times. The few times I've seen Orchid it's been the cheapest album actually. Besides, I've never seen My arms your hearse in stock.

Darkness 03-09-2006 06:45 PM

The only bought CD I do not have is Morningrise, now... I'll get it soon enough.

Stormrider 03-09-2006 06:50 PM

Tojes, how much was Orchid when you saw it ?

Thats pretty cool, Dunkelheit. I want a Still Life shirt.
