Speaking about growling....

I'm unsatisfied with Trivium's vocalist. He's forcing his vocals too much.

I agree 100%, he only really goes to his true potential in two songs:

Machines and Icon Of Malice by Capharnaum.

RouteOne 02-27-2006 05:00 PM

I just don't understand why they are being regarded as the new "Metallica". They seem mediochre in my opinion.

nowitzki 02-27-2006 05:15 PM
Well #1, screaming and growling take a slightly differed technique
#2, screaming correctly is something hard to figure out
#3, if Chris Barnes is your example of a good growl, no wonder you see it as being so easy
#4, Heafy sucks at screaming, sucks at singing, and is good at growling (but that's only in Capharnaum anyhow)
I was using Chris Barnes as an example because someone was trying to make out Cannibal Corpse songs were difficult to sing.
And I'm just pointing out that its a lot harder to come across a great metal singer than a great growler/screamer, and I notice this especially with local bands.

SimonCore 02-28-2006 11:02 AM

Yeah it's easier to scream properly a cannibal corpse verse, than it is to sing an inflames chorus.

Invicta_Veritas 02-28-2006 12:27 PM

Anyone can scream or growl, yes. However, to be able to perform those kinds of vocals well and on a continuous basis takes more talent than it seems. the combination of emotion and technique it takes to do this without harming your voice is a talent in and of itself. As a vocalist who both sings and growls myself, I can, however, state that heafy is at best, mediocre.

SimonCore 02-28-2006 12:34 PM

Matt Heafy does not scream properly. It's already ruined his voice slightly as he regrets doing the high pitched clean choruses on Asendancy because he can't do them live anymore! God knows how his voice doesn't go hoarse though.
I hope his voice doesn't blow when i see them in a couple of weeks:mad:

i am the robots 02-28-2006 12:40 PM

He's wrecked his voice so bad dude, it's unfortunate, but he was never even that good in the first place. Thats why kiddies need to understand that you can't just go out there and start screaming. Not anybody can scream, it does take skill. True anybody could scream in theory, but there's those who sound like Atilla from Mayhem, and then theres those who sound like Howard from Killswitch Engage.

Howard Jones is one of the best metalcore singers around.

i am the robots 02-28-2006 12:51 PM

Not really metalcore anymore.. in his old band... Blood Has Been Shed I think... yes, but KSE isn't metalcore. Jesse Leach is really good too, so is Trevor Phipps, and the dude from All That Remains.

SimonCore 02-28-2006 02:35 PM

Killswitch own.

Anyway back on Trivium! Anyone going to The Crusade tour? I'm going to the Cardiff one. Mendeed are supporting instead of bloodsimple at the first ten dates.

i am the robots 02-28-2006 03:23 PM

When is the Crusade due out?
And I'm probably not gonna go, I'm not a fan of their live show.

Joe 02-28-2006 03:40 PM

Apparently a lot of people aren't fans of their live shows. I've seen videos and they sound really awesome live, but the reason people don't like it apparently is because they want people to get violent or something like that. I was reading the Guitar World recently about them and it's pretty amazing how they started. Matt's only 19 which is pretty incredible considering he joined in around '99

i am the robots 02-28-2006 03:43 PM

Matt's a good musician, don't get me wrong, but he loses his voice when they play live, he is not a good vocalist, he kills it for me.

nowitzki 02-28-2006 04:36 PM

I really enjoy Trivium live, while Heafy's voice isn't great, the performance is usually amazing. I've seen them twice, once in a really small venue that held about 200 people, and at Download festival in front of thousands.

Invicta_Veritas 02-28-2006 06:14 PM

ATR- Phil Labonte

Kse is metalcore

Jesse david Leach left KsE partly because he kept blowing out his voice like Heafy keeps doing. He really isn't that good (though I prefer him to Howard)

SimonCore 03-02-2006 09:33 AM

Trivium don't encourage violence at there shows. That's just a rumour. They do however encourage circle pits and mosh pits. I'm hoping for a wall of death when I go see them in two weeks.

I thought the reason people didn't like the live show was because he never ever sings the chorous of pull harder on the strings of your martyr. And he way overuses the crowd singing the clean choruses. That's the only negative thing about it for me.

Huber 03-02-2006 09:39 AM

Not only is it only pits and stuff, but I only heard Matt say he wanted to see more movement like once, and then he said "that's more like it" and that was it. It is definetly rumor, or he has just stopped.

SimonCore 03-02-2006 09:42 AM

I dunno maybe in the very early days of Trivium when they all looked like complete idiots.

mr black 03-02-2006 08:14 PM

Yeah he's shorts, tshirt, shaved head, and chin height guitar were prettyyyy coooool haha...

Taste_My_Scythe 03-02-2006 08:25 PM

You know, I really don't get the hype. I saw them with Bodom and Amon Amarth, and I didn't find them too interesting or stimulating. I don't know, maybe it's just me.
I see them all over the place now...Guitar World, Revolver, Spin, everywhere. I don't get what's so great about them.

Though I do have the lead singer's Maiden shirt. "Run to the Hills". props for that. They were also very energetic live, and that was fun to watch.

SimonCore 03-03-2006 05:06 PM

Yeah they're very energetic live. And they play the solos twice as fast as to on the CD's. They're very talented guitarists.

DanD 03-03-2006 05:14 PM

Playing solos twice as fast isn't always a good thing...

This is proof!

Huber 03-04-2006 03:23 PM

Just watched the Dying in Your Arms video. It was the show I saw. It's pretty cool.

toolfreak 03-05-2006 06:28 AM

I love trivium heaps but i must say it did take me a few listens to get my head round the heavy vocals but once u do its great in my humble 15 year old opinion:naughty: nobody flame me ill cry lol

SimonCore 03-05-2006 06:38 AM

Can't wait only two weeks until i see them!

BlackRoseImmortal915 03-05-2006 09:26 AM
