I agree with you about Mikey, he's not that good, but he's at least functional. And Frank and Ray are good enough that you don't really notice it. That said, I think that Gerard's voice and lyrics prove that he is the driving force.
|
Even if they're not technically emo or hardcore, they certainly have emo and hardcore influences and they lean in that direction. So references to MCR as an "emocore" band aren't wrong, just a little off.
|
Maybe I haven't heard enough by them, but I really do NOT see the hardcore in them. Probably not the emo either, but I'm not the biggest emo fan, so I won't judge right now.
|
The best description I've heard is "post-hardcore". It's bands that grew out of hardcore but expanded their music to include more complex riffs, rhythms, etc.
|
Once again, maybe I haven't heard enough. So I feel right now I'm in no position to judge them.
|
MCR definitely isnt post-hardcore. But I hear their first album mightve been, but i havent heard that yet.
|
They fit the profile, though. They have the fast pace and railing power chords of hardcore bands, and Ray's guitar solos (especially in "You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison" and "Thank You for the Venom") push them out of normal punk and hardcore into post-hardcore. They also have metal and arena rock influences (note the Queen-style solo in "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)").

Trophy Scars..... My Chemical Romance...... I don't see the connection, sorry.
|
As far as the "emo-ness" of MCR, I agree that they don't fit the standard definition of emo - introspective, personal lyrics. I think of them as "superhero emo", after I read an interview in Spin in which Gerard said that he has created a sort of vampire/supervillain/antihero character for his lyrics and performances that serves as his alter-ego. So instead of personal revelations, he shares the things that he can't do as himself but needs to express.

No. Just, no. MCR are in no way emo or hxc. Leave it alone, and just admit theyre just power-pop with a guitar solo. |
Wow. Holy shit. Just give up, man. Please just go listen to Mohinder.

Haahaha your a funny guy. |
Thanks, guys, but I stand by my analysis. Just because I'm new doesn't mean that I'm a moron. And just because I'm not a music snob who hates everything mainstream doesn't mean I listen to crap. Yes, MCR has a lot of pop sensibilities, but to just write them off as another pop-punk band is way oversimplifying the issue.

You nearly redeemed yourself with this post. |
theyre just power-pop with a guitar solo.
This is tr00. I don't see what sets them apart from The Used or Taking Back Sunday. I would barely even consider them pop-punk. They just seem too...generic, like something I've seen before, and that something is The Cure. There, my $0.02. |
It's because they aren't pop-punk. At all.
And The Cure is good, son. EDIT: What the hell? I hit my 4,000th post last night in the punk forum. How is this it? |
The clash thread was deleted, so you probably lost a couple posts.
|
Ahaha. Good thing I wasn't coma girl.

I dont dislike them because theyre mainstream, I dislike because i dont like the music they make. Actually, there were 3 songs on 3 cheers that I enjoyed. I understand just because your new doesnt make you an idiot. Also, they are power-pop, but that doesnt mean they have to sound EXACTLY like all other bands in that genre, it just means they sound somewhat similar. |
Now, that I respect. I've just gotten into too many arguments with people who dismiss anything that's on the radio as automatically "too mainstream", and they won't give the music a chance.
|
there is a christian band called Kids In The Way (I know it's a stupid name) but they sound alot like MCR, only their guys voice is a little deeper, they are similar, but not too alike, I think they are both awesome check out KITW on purevolume

IM NOT OKAY
In sane song. how fun is it on guitar!!! but basic |
Talk about anything My Chemical Romance here. Good or bad lets hear it.
Please DONT SPAM OR HIJACK!
i think this should be closed and a new one should be opened in the emo section. i mean, come on. calling my chemical romane pop-punk is like calling nofx jazz. pay attention to the music people!! |
Haha are you joking ?
|
I don't think that MCR is emo. If you listen to some emo bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate and Indian Summer, you will see that MCR really doesn't really fit the genre. But I don't think it matters all too much what forum this thread is in. If you like the band discuss them here. You will get a better response in here anyway.
Thank You for the Venom is a pretty sweet song.
its my favorite but most ppl hear don't seem to like them very much who cares if their main streami like 'em... |
I met Ray Toro.

Meh, they're alright. Their live performances aren't that great, and their newest CD is being beaten to death with a wet noodle. Their first CD was alot truer, more original, and seemed alot better to me. Ray and Frank show promise at making a fantastic guitar duet, but I don't think they really shine at all. At first I thought Gerard was a very interesting person, but now, he's just another very ugly, drugged out lead singer with a somewhat annoying voice some of the time. I still listen to these guys, but I can't say that they are my favorite.
|
I'm ashamed to say I kind of like this band.
|
its kinda weird gerard madeout with his brother but you ...well that is really gross but it didn't affect them much so w/e
|
Why, what did he all say to you?
He didn't say anything ****ty. You could just tell he didn't want to take the two minutes to sign our autographs. Cause his band is number 1 on TRL you know. |

I see. Comagirl said once over in the green day thread that her encounter with tre cool went something like this: Comagirl: "Hey, you know they dont ned to put these fences between us. Its not like we're going to try and kill you or anything." Tre Cool: "Shut up. Just...shut up." |
**** rock stars.
