Someone was telling me that female drummers were much more valueable or more in demand than male drummers. Have you heard anything like that? I'd like to get to the bottom of this mystery.
Short answer is in most cases male musicians have a big of a "thing" for female ones.

You'll notice on the boards, if you someone with a name like "HawtGuitarGal" they get attention ++.

Males and females have no fundamental musical differences that I am aware of, or at least none that would make someone say "Sorry, you're a good player and all, but we absolutely must have a female/male for the band to sound right."

Hey, welcome back LR. Nice to have a few mods who actually post here again. It's just been madthumbs recently. Anyways, cheers :chug:

P.S. Joz, Havic listens to tons of music, actually alot of crappy death metal along with Jazz and funk. I dont like that death metal stuff, but he's into it, just talk to him you'll find out alot about the dude. No need to be such a sore ***!

The_JoZ needs to chill  Music is music fella's who cares if you only listen to one genre/style.

wonder_steve 07-11-2004 03:51 AM

To true Madthumbs, you don't have to listen to every different genre to be a good musician.

When you invent a new system for measuring time accurately and realise the need for time zones, then YOU can centre the system on your OWN capital.

Good to see you posting again, LR! That Pineapple thing seems an ace idea, pity I just missed it the first time round - I didn't spend any time reading round before joining up like many people seem to have done, I came straight in, in a blaze of glory! *ahem*

Hehe, does anyone remember the very short lived 'Official Spam Thread'?

Just wait a few more years, then some of the people around today will be regarded as old cool people who we don't see anymore. Someday, someone will say, 'hey, what happened to HaVIC? Anyone remember him? How about BassVirtuoso?'

THEN we can feel hardcore and super 1337.

Oh, and someone will say, woah, basscomp 100... how long have these things been going, and I shall say, Hah! I was in Basscomp 1!

gaslight 07-11-2004 05:46 AM

^ Haha yes.

That was awful.

Pages and pages of "rijfldiojklf" "redfijlrfd" "rfdihlkrf" and "1234512345" "1234512345".

Poor LR :(.

My personal favourite was that guy who posted:

My post count is 254!
My post count is 255!
My post count is 256!
My post count is 257!

And filled about 5 pages like that.

It's nothing that complicated they get attention FOR the band not FROM the band at live shows. Also it is something that sets you apart from 50 bands that are all guys. it makes you easily remembered when there is something unique about you
That blows. I got screwed over and ended up having to stay in college an extra semester because of a 1 unit soccer class I suposedly signed up for but never went to. I don't think I even signed up for it, I think they just wanted my money. Bastards.

joe
A soccer class? That's just retarded. And the thing about my school is that they told me I could finish my Double major in four years... which was a complete lie... being that there was like an extra 40 or more credits between the two of them... and it's not like I was a slacker taking 12 credits or some crap... there were many semesters when I was juggling 24 credits...
And then being a music major, you have to be registered for ensemble classes, which were like a measley 1 credit.. but they don't count towards your degree... so I often took them for no credit so that I could fit more classes in...

Many people feel that the music major is the easiest major... oh god do they have it wrong. We have to take the same general education crap courses that they have to take (math's, english.. writing, sociology, etc... ) and then we have our classes specific to our major (piano, theory, styles, etc) And then we have to take ensembles... like orchestra, string ensemble, lab band, jazz ensembles.. you have these classes that are three hours long, or multiple times aweek for 1 credit... and then you have your lessons... so its like: You have to study for gen ed classes, you have to study for your music classes, you have to set aside large amounts of time for your ensemble classes, you have to practice the music for your ensemble classes, you have to practice piano, you have to practice music for your lessons, you have to practice music for Aural theory...

So does anyone get the sense that I was often at school from 7am to 10pm... and I lived 45 mins away... commuted...

I swear I commited education suicide.

And don't forget that I worked somewhere in there....

My school... absolutely could blow up, and I'd do a ****ing happy dance.

I'll tell you this... all of you planning on going to college. Do not waste your time trying to bend over backwards for your school... Do not do them favors, they don't remember them, and don't care either way.... They will screw you over. Cover YOUR ***.. not theirs.!

Cheers LR, im just going to college (in the UK, but same kinda rubbish)...isnt college in the states the same as university over here? we only do 2 years in college :)

LightRaven 07-11-2004 10:08 AM
Haha. Right. I was wanting to have the major so I would be better suited as a musician-for-hire type person (working as a backup for bands/singers in recording studios, and the like) and possibly play clubs.

Theory was my other choice, but I'm not much of a teacher.

I'm meeting with my advisor next week. Hopefully I'll make the right decision. ;)
Thanks alot for explaining that, though.
If you want to be more of a studio musician, then go for a performance major. While in school, make sure you play in alot of major ensembles, and buddy buddy with the head of the jazz department. Eventually, if you are good, they'll pass gigs onto you.. or use you in their own CD's. I know alot of people who have gotten into the studio musician scene that way. And also lots of permanent gigs.. like at resturants and stuff.

It's similar.. our programs are 4 years if you are specializing in something... 2 years if you just want your associates.

Upright is not a cello. the DB (double bass=upright) is not related to the violin string family anyway.

It can be quite hard to play... alot of it involves ear training, because there is no indication where the notes are. You just KNOW where they are.

And playing with a bow? I have a DB student now, and we usually fall to the floor laughing our asses off in the middle of my work, because one day I described his bow playing.. which sounds like a cow in heat!

of course, now he can't get that out of his head.. and giggles half the lesson away when he's playing with a bow...

Moose Malloy - As far as I've been able to work out, the US High School includes the upper half of Secondary School and College, and the US college is roughly similar to University.

Moose_Malloy 07-11-2004 10:21 AM

LR= i know upright isnt a cello, im just saying, i wanna start 1 of those 2 instruments..thanks for the advice though :)
Wintermute= Thanks for that mate, ive always wondered why american college kids look so much older then ours...

Hey LR, can I ask you something (again)? What happened to the catalog (I think it was an online catalog) that the store you worked in was making? I just remembered about that...

Totally out of topic: I wont buy a fretless soon... I lost $100 :(

Hello LightRaven!

I guess you don't know who the crap I am, but it doesn't matter, cause I remember you and I've always loved your great posts. If there is ever a voting for the best mx:er ever, you will get my vote.

Heck, I'm positive you'll get all our votes.

Let me put it this way: over the years I've been active at more than a dozen different forums and none have been as great, as tidy and as friendly as this bass forum.

They tell me that it's much thanks to you. And I'm bound to believe them, after all I've seen.

Keep up the GREAT work!

gaslight 07-11-2004 11:14 AM

^ Everyone in the bass forum <3 LR. Bestest mod ever.

Bass+Fingers+Amp=Groove 07-11-2004 11:22 AM

Hmmm. then she is a super mod...is she the one that would name the new Mod, there has been a debate about that, i have come to the conclusion that the best candidate, is Joe, he is mature and wise, but still a fun guy. Joe for Mod

cAPS_lOCK 07-11-2004 11:25 AM

I second that. Joe for mod!

...on a second thought, let me rephrase that...

Joe and a whole bunch of others just as worthy for mods!

Wintermute 07-11-2004 11:29 AM

Yeah, I did wonder on the futility of that thread. I think MX has to appoint a new mod, but as he/she/they/it can't read all the forums all the time, I guess recomendations of existing mods and supermods will be taken into account heavily...

... I love you Heather!
