Sad that the bass forum died.

Been inspired to get better lately, been learning a bunch of Doug Rauch lines lately. They aren't overly complex but they have some nice groove to them.

Played bass today, felt good!
Raayl is too busy working on his "max gains, bro" and writing djent to care about us anymore. His composition has really come a long way, though.
How's that fool doing anyway?

I haven't talked to him in a long while since I joined the military and Ben and I stopped making music for the Forgotten Archetype quite a few years ago.

He would send me music he was working on every once-in-a-while, but haven't heard anything from him since.

Seems to be doing well. He sends me links to new tunes, but conversation never really progresses after that. His facebook url is /Liam7 if you want to hit him up there.

I think I'm going to take an upright bass course in the spring semester. The only instruments I can rent are all 3/4 size, but I eventually want to buy this bass, which is has a ~4/4 scale:

http://ergoinstruments.com/EUB_6_String.html

What should I do, guys? Put myself into debt (possible tax write-off) so that I can buy it learn on the electric upright from the beginning? Or learn on a rented upright and then re-learn on the electric after I graduate (and can afford it)?

BenJammin 11-10-2012 12:24 PM

I've been eying an Ergo for a while. He makes some pretty wild stuff for good prices, and apparently the only real downside is that it comes with a shitty stand, but that's easy to fix, it seems.

karmapavementplan 11-12-2012 09:50 AM

So... played a gig which went well. Everyone congratulated the singer and guitarist and one of our friends who just did some filming for us. Anonymous bassist syndrome must be a medical diagnoses by now, surely?

fingers mccoy 11-13-2012 03:36 AM

this guy wanst to learn bass so he calls up a pro bass teacher and arranges a lesson

the guy has no idea how to play so in the lesson they work through the basics and he's finding it hard to get a feel for it, leaves dejected and the teacher tells him not to worry, in a couple lessons time he'll be amazed at his progress

two weeks pass and the teacher hasn't heard a thing from the guy so he calls him up and is like 'hey man what's going on, what about that second lesson?'

the guy says 'oh i'm sorry man i've just been so busy'

fatbandit 11-13-2012 04:45 PM

Man, playing at a practice without earplugs sucks. I am so deaf, and I'm answering phone calls at work tomorrow D:
Didn't he get banned for massively spamming the site? Or was that Icarus or Judas or something?
I don't know, I was away for far too long. I know that I came back a few times, but it was pretty dead. I feel strongly that people like Raayl keep people away from forums though. I know there were a few people that he had normal conversations with, but anyone else he was a jerk to. There's another forum I used to go to that had several people like that, and it's now almost totally dead.

Holy crap, I just spent two minutes typing about Raayl. What a waste. FML.

Spaceman Spiff 11-16-2012 01:39 PM

Word up, guys.

I just got myself a sweet new pedal. Digitech Hardwire RV-7. It's a reverb pedal that has a reverse reverb setting. The glory!

angle2040 11-20-2012 07:21 PM

could anyone please help me?
I need the bass tabs for upon a burning body desperado and the break down for intermission if anyone can help me that be freaking awesome!
Sweet

I have short stubby fingers. Sometimes my jazz bass seems huge. What's a good short scale that's not terribly expensive?
Peavey Grind BXP... I am cursed with the small fingers myself. The Peavey Grind gives me plenty of versatility. I'm a slappin' and poppin' guy. When I play the thicker necks, it jacks my fingers up. I still utilize the bigger neck basses. But when I need to get down to precision and technique, I always grab my Grind.

I've never used a compressor. Are they really that handy? Most musicians tend to talk about them like they're totally necessary.

And I'm thinking of getting the Diamond Tremolo.

FunkMetalBass 12-03-2012 05:01 PM

It's subtle, but it's fairly obvious when A/Bing. I use about a 1.5:1 ratio and a threshold of about -5dB, so it mellows out the excessively loud clicks, finger noise, and occasional loud note.

fatbandit 12-03-2012 06:12 PM

Gonna set my rig up so it gets compressed two or 3 times. Predictable bass volume and sound ftw when it comes to gigging.

Hells yeah, son.

Are you going to run it in your FX loop, or from your DI out?

fatbandit 12-05-2012 02:08 PM

Running my bass into channel 1 before anything else in the chain, then out from the fx loop in my pod to channel 2 probably. Just need to set it up right!

fatbandit 12-05-2012 02:09 PM

Also ordering a new barefaced cab this month :3

Activista anti-MTV 12-20-2012 03:29 AM

Thanks for any help on this.

Kudos to you for wanting to up your musicianship. We can surely answer any specific questions you have, but for general learning, I'd recommend checking out http://www.cyberfretbass.com and, for a more philosophical approach, http://www.scottsbasslessons.com.

For your string question, you should change your strings when you are dissatisfied with either the tone or feel of yours. It can be a never-ending quest to find the right strings for you, so I'd recommend finding bassists on YouTube that have a tone similar to what you want your bass to sound like, and then starting with the strings that bassist uses (or something similar).

If/when you do decide to get new strings, I highly recommend getting a proper setup on your bass. Any qualified luthier or tech can install the new strings and do a setup (not too expensive) to make sure your strings are properly intonated and that the bass comfortable to play. I'd also recommend asking to watch the setup process and learn to do it yourself. It's really easy, you'll save money, and as you progress, you'll be able to more easily adapt your bass to your playing style as your preferences will undoubtedly change.

For the tuning question, there are a myriad of ways to tune your bass by ear, provided you just want to be in tune with yourself (unless you have perfect pitch, you probably wont ever be able to tune your bass exactly by ear). All you have to do is choose a reference string and match the next open string to the fifth fret of that string. For example, the open A-string should match the fifth fret of the E-string. Repeat this method for the A- and D-strings, then the D- and G-strings.

Another method of tuning relatively is to use harmonics. Match the fifth fret harmonic of your reference string to the seventh fret harmonic of the next string. For example, the fifth fret harmonic of the E-string should match the seventh fret harmonic of the A-string.

fatbandit 12-21-2012 09:05 PM

She doesn't get less perfect over time.

not that anyone cares, but I finished up my electronic/ambient/cinematic EP. I'll be releasing it early next year, and then starting in on a bunch of new projects (some of them even bass related :O).

Is this only going to be a digital release, or will you be getting hard copies done?
