A few songs I really like are the first one (I forget the name), They're Coming To Get You Barbara, Shake Is For 8th Graders, and Elderly Pair Beaten With Hammer.

Jaundice 04-25-2009 01:08 PM

I saw Volta at a festival maybe six months ago, I was pretty bored.

Day of the Baphomets for the win though.

Matt? 04-26-2009 12:13 AM

hmm. the song is ok. i just wish there were bands doing what tmv does but like without being cheesy... i still like the first two albums a bit for sure. they have some real 70s prog / psych moments

DhA 04-26-2009 06:47 AM

Did the long passages of nothing in Frances the Mute not annoy anyone?

adrianman 04-26-2009 07:52 AM
Did the long passages of nothing in Frances the Mute not annoy anyone?
yes, that is the thing i hate about the mars volta. the song is over and then its just like another 4 minutes of random ****. or like in miranda the ghost that isnt holy anymore, it takes like 5 minutes for the song to actually get started

sweboy 04-26-2009 08:31 AM

those passages are not even long wtf

adrianman 04-26-2009 08:53 AM
those passages are not even long wtf
do you have an example?

oathfbass 04-26-2009 10:28 AM
It's an awesome song.

As a side note, has anyone listened to Cryptomnesia? It's a really good album.
And I don't think it sound like TMV at all.
And I definitely prefer Pridgen's drumming to Zach Hill's.
I need to check that out since i've never heard it.

DhA 04-26-2009 07:05 PM

To be fair I relistened to some of Frances The Mute today, for the first time in ages, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I don't think I would listen to it all at once like I would with Deloused...atm my ratings would go Deloused > Frances > Bedlam > Amputechure, although the latter two, especially Amputechure are both due a relisten.

Supernewman 04-29-2009 09:37 PM

I enjoy all of the albums TMV have put out, but I find that they are all appealing for much different reasons. I gotta say De-Loused and Frances are tied for first then it goes Goliath and Amputechture.
yes, that is the thing i hate about the mars volta. the song is over and then its just like another 4 minutes of random ****. or like in miranda the ghost that isnt holy anymore, it takes like 5 minutes for the song to actually get started
But I totally know what you all mean by the irritating long silences in Frances, that's all that's keeping it from being sure fire first.

The great thing about TMV is their distinct sound, all of the albums have a particular style unique to TMV that no other band could emulate. Speaking of which, that's how they described the "acoustic" nature of their new album.
In regards to their latest album I heard it was supposed to be accoustic.
It's not acoustic by regular standards, but it is by their standards and perception. It's their version of acoustic, and I'm pretty excited, I'm hoping for more of a style similar to the first two on Octahedron, but that's highly unlikely.

Also, ATD-I sucks compared to TMV. But Sparta is pretty sweet.

Spaceman Spiff 04-30-2009 05:46 AM

Nah, ATDI is awesome. Sparta... their first album was pretty good... but that's about it for Sparta.

adrianman 04-30-2009 10:35 AM

atdi is great. sparta on the other hand, i didnt really listen to any of the albums but i watched the music videos and didnt like it at all. jim ward is nothing without cedric and omar.

Already_Taken 04-30-2009 03:35 PM

ATDI is one of my favorite bands ever. they were my middle school anthem.

nedchambers 05-10-2009 04:21 PM

new album is less than 50 minutes long and is described as more mellow. new single isn't amazing but still, perhaps they might be exercising a bit of self-restraint on this album, which would be the first time they've done that since 2003. i liked the live version of Since We've Been Wrong a lot.

BenX02 05-11-2009 10:53 AM

I love everything the Mars Volta has put out. Bedlam is great.

IMO: Frances the Mute > Bedlam in Goliath > Deloused (Bedlam and Deloused are basically a tie, but I've been listening to Bedlam more lately) > Amputechture

They are all great albums though.

Amp is to low on that list for it to be right :/. Switch it with Bedlam and it'll be perfect :p

horseypie 05-12-2009 01:35 AM

but amputechture is horrible. the only decent song is day of the baphomets which ok is badass but everything else is so bad
goliath at least starts out killer then drags on after the first 6 or so songs

I disagree, I love everything on that album except for the last track.

Bedlam, the first half is okay then it's boring and only picks up steam towards the end of the album with soothsayer.

How often do you listen to amp? The stuff that goes on in some of the songs sounds like stuff we did in jazz band(improv and jam)

Yeah I dont know why people dislike Amp so much, after a few more listens of it I started to enjoy it more and more, it really is a good album.
