Illusion of Safety still schools the new album, hard.

RunAmokRampant 10-18-2005 11:52 PM

Hmm I find it hard to compare IOS with the new one. Totally different approach IMO. I dig the new album. I find it annoying when people say 'older stuff is much better' like they know the bands music better than the band itself. It's all a matter of opinion but I wish people will find better things to support their opinion.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-19-2005 12:36 AM

You are total misinterpreting my statement. I dislike the direction Thrice started heading when I heard AITA. Therefore, this new album wasn't that great to me either. I'm not saying I dislike it, but I prefer the older Thrice to the newer any day.

xKONRADx 10-19-2005 11:55 AM

This is the thing, repetition, formulation and any set boundaries will eventually kill a band. even if we all agree that the new album isnt as good as previous ones, that doesnt mean they made a mistake.

Any crits will result in my eternal undying adoration.

Dancin' Man 10-19-2005 10:04 PM

voting is fun. I need a metal band, preferably one of these newer tech metal/grind-core bands that have exceptionally good lyrics. I'm thinking DEP is alright, but there must be something better. CTTS isn't as heavy or technical as what I want.

ATC 10-19-2005 10:09 PM

I need a trip-hop meets adult contemporary full-time band. I find I enjoy this relatively obscure genre quite a bit. I've only done one song within the genre but it was so much fun. A girl in my Songwriting class tried it out and it inspired me. I'm so happy. I need to drink less Extra sugar iced tea.

xKONRADx 10-19-2005 10:13 PM

you hate it? thats a little harsh. and how do i stereotype rap? sorry about the comments about your mom, if you had spent some time in this forum, youd see that there is alot of insulting without actual intent to hurt feelings. im sorry if i hurt yours. ass fucker. see, just like that. no harm. the thing is, i think you should apologize to crimson punk. i mean if you hate my song, and didnt even bother to write anything for his, that must be really hard on him. we all love mx, cant we just love each other?

Dancin' Man 10-19-2005 10:20 PM

hmph... I suppose. Basically, I think that rap doesn't need to be writtena s it is said, just like I don't need to write out my lyrics BLASSRHT FAHAHEKEHEEHCKKHANKDFSHC
\SAJDKNCNBBALLLARGGGASBNSJ
just because they go into grind songs. Also, I disliked your repetition and overall found it poorly written. It is nothing personal at all because I've seen you write good stuff. This just wasn't it. Also, I don't think Crimson Punk's song deserves critique given his arrogance/confidence about the time he spent on it. I'm only willing to put in the same relative effort of critiquing as I think the writer put in. That isn;t to say a 15 minute song can;t be the best, but I doubt that someone could write a first place song in 15 minutes. Cock rider.

xKONRADx 10-19-2005 10:24 PM

yes. thanks for the explanation and actually i think i agree with you on some level. however i think your grind lyrics analogy isnt perfect. its more like when someone writes a song and then puts the backup vocals in parenthesis. bastards.

Dancin' Man 10-19-2005 10:26 PM

Yeah, but sometimes for formatting and simply the way they are meant to be read, parentheses make sense so I don't think either of us has had a good analogy yet. Writing country lyrics with a built in southern twang?

xKONRADx 10-19-2005 10:31 PM

i think the problem with writing country lyrics is the writing... and the country. hm.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-19-2005 11:21 PM

I tried out for a tech metal band (vocals). Mine are sort of closer towards a more mainstream hardcore vocal (think, Beloved, but higher). Maybe it will work into something cool. I'll bring the melody up into their breakdowns.

Needless to say, the bassist who was doing vocals was not cutting it.

cytoplasmicglob 10-20-2005 09:10 AM

eh, i'm working on noise IDM right now.

ah, to enter next week, or not to enter next week? That is the question.

Hey, just so you guys know, my song was meant to be a dedication in the form of a poem to my nephew, Mason, who was born premature a couple months ago. I thought that the rhyming worked well, but that's probably because I was involved in the situation, and you guys weren't. And as far as it fitting with music, that wasn't my primary intention.

And on a sidenote, has anyone ever heard of the band The Zutons? Just picked up their album and its glorious. I highly recommend them.

ITRIEDVOODOOONCE 10-20-2005 03:11 PM

to dancin man, here are some good tech metal/grind bands (even though some are small and have bad quality)

Mason? One of my friends older sister just had a baby named Mason about 8 months ago I think. They call him the Moose. She just got married to the father. She was 19 when she had the baby. I swear she's not trashy though, she's really super cool and has dreads.

I've heard of the acacia strain but never checked them out. I'll get on this. Have you heard The Concubine? Oh, Shaton a turtle is Ion Dissonance. I was listening to them in the car today. The Firl Next Door is always screaming is such a good song.

ATC - you gave out two 5's and 2 2's but no 1 or 14.

ATC 10-20-2005 08:23 PM

I was working on a Songwriting guide which I figured might help a few people out. Here's a link. If you guys have anything to add, feel free. Oh, and similarly if you think any of the exercises prescribed are crap or concepts are.

edit: fixed my votes. Thanks, Pete.

Dancin' Man 10-20-2005 08:50 PM

I like the idea of writing excersizes better than the lyric game fing.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-20-2005 10:46 PM

With the exception of the first 4 songs, and maybe 2 more (Music Box and Like Moths to the Flame), I'm liking the new Thrice album...

Well, half of it at least.

Disco Dragon 10-21-2005 01:47 PM

We should probably close the voting thread pretty soon. So everyone make you sure you get your final rankings up as soon as possible.

RunAmokRampant 10-23-2005 02:27 AM

voting should be closed now

TojesDolan 10-23-2005 02:50 PM

I haven't seen Burt log on lately, probably he's not around, so It'll be open for a while. Until he returns.

Dancin' Man 10-23-2005 07:18 PM

As far as I know ATC won with Sonnet in 2nd. Please accept my votes because my originals were right. if someone still has the ability to win after my votes that I didn't rank, tell me and I'll give them a ranking of 4th place.

Dancin' Man 10-24-2005 07:23 PM

Aren't you guys glad I made him join?

SubtleDagger 10-24-2005 08:56 PM
