Underground really doesn't bother me (I've heard little bits and pieces tho, I'm not really into it). The origins of poor hispanic and black youngsters expressing their problems in their songs, some of them actually very deep lyrics.

But then, the rap that is played on the radio on a day to day basis... well you know its just annoying and that's why probably alot of people dispise it.

It's not that I hate the originals ideals of rap, but the originaly ideals were lost as it gained popularit, because alot of it (not all talks about), smacking hoes, etc, etc. IMO

mr black 05-10-2005 07:52 PM

Bar Tupac whom i believe is one of the best song writers ever, i cant really relate to any rap. Australian Hip Hop is good though...
I will never like rap , so sorry......
sorry to say im on the same boat

black\m/metal 05-10-2005 08:27 PM

I like lots of rap, although I am saddened to see that nowadays it seems like everything is stereotyped and they lyrics have succumbed to "get crunk" and "drop it like its hot" I really like alot of older stuff, like Eazy-e, Lil Troy, Woodie, Brotha Lynch Hung, Gangstarr, J-5...ect....

trev913 05-10-2005 08:37 PM

The only rap I ever really had a liking for was Ludacris, Mystikal, and 2Pac, and only one or two songs by each. I never really got into it.
The Roots are fantastic, as is K-Os
K-Os is great, and Canadian I think.

Against Miik! 05-10-2005 09:16 PM

Just go into it with an open mind. Get into the beat. Don't be embarrased if you are a metalhead. Listen to "The Corner" by Common, "Family Business" by Kanye West, Bridgin the Gap by Nas, and all of The Roots.

Jacaranda 05-10-2005 09:18 PM

After reading that Josh Homme article awhile back about opening your mind to music and like it for the sound I find myself actually liking rap... the only person I still hate in rap is Ludacris and maybe Fat Joe and Nelly... just cause I saw Nelly live like 5 years ago and he decided he didn't want to do a concert that night and made me waste like 20$ (I was 11 back then so I liked rap :P)
NWA is one of my favorite rap guys same with The Roots.

Damn, I'm getting tons of files from here. Awesome F.A. :)

I'm only recently taking a like to rap, and I found I like Jay-Z, K-Os, Nas, N.W.A., Dre's solo stuff, Jurrasic 5, Snoop, some Cypress Hill, N.E.R.D., Outkast, and the Beastie Boys. Not bad for someone who just got into rap, eh :) ?

I'm listening to Straight Outta Compton as we speak.

insearchofsomething11 05-10-2005 09:29 PM

i posted this else where so http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3LPHMJAW2TCNE0R79X1ZK9B5OC

the roots... illadelph half life... enjoi

Ganondorf 05-10-2005 11:51 PM

Thanks for you guys posting all these songs :)

I already liked a handful of rap artists, and a lot of this stuff is really good. Kinda annoys me how a lot of people are saying they don't like rap because of the mainstream artists, because we all know the mainstream rock scene is so much better

The Essential 05-11-2005 12:00 AM

why is rap in a rock and metal forum? ?

ATM 05-11-2005 12:02 AM
why is rap in a rock and metal forum? ?
Because I wanted to expose rock and metal fans to rap.

I appreciate all the comments, guys. I'm glad to see some of you uploading songs and sharing the wealth.

If I even broadened one persons mind with this FG, I'll be satisfied.

Iai 05-11-2005 04:54 AM

Am I still going to be helping with the full FG later on, or have you and Illmatic got it covered?

Rothmans 05-11-2005 05:09 AM

I like rap and hip - hop I like De la soul a lot but I havnt given rap or hip hop that much site so I will check it out.

Bartender 05-11-2005 05:39 AM

Don't think this was answered, so;

Not necessarily their best tracks, since I don't have what seems to be considered their best album.

Instead of wasting that post with a useless comment you could've awnsered my question.

Because Kosta asked who he was.

Rap isn't a genre of music. It is an element commonly used in hip-hop. If rap was a genre, you'd have to call (at some time or another) these rap artists:
Aerosmith
Limp Bizkit
Linkin Park
The Who

Bartender 05-11-2005 06:16 AM

No you wouldn't.

Just cause a band incorporates a different style into their music doesn't make them part of that genre. Public Enemy sampled Slayer songs, but I wouldn't call them Thrash metal.

And a form fo music can't be an element of the culture. Right.

MattyBlade 05-11-2005 07:53 AM

Rap is great. I first started listening to it back in 93' or so with the release of "gangstas paradise" by Coolio. I love alot of older rap music but, I find the "new" stuff of today to be waaaaaaay to over done/over played and are by far making WAAAAAAAAAY too much money. NwA, ghetto boys, eazy e(solo) are probably my favourite rap/rap groups of all time however Tupac and biggie are closely behind. Every commercial rap artist of today (50 cent, the game, g(ay)-unit) is just coping on the style of these artists and is completely unoriginal.

to sum it up: Old rap = good
New rap = no good

Interstate 05-11-2005 08:04 AM

I've become a big fan of rap recently. Stuff like Notorious B.I.G and NWA are among my favourite artists. I've been listening to 'Ready To Die' by Notorious BIG non stop for days now - every song is great. - basically I love all the old school stuff, can't stand the new rap thats coming out - 50 Cent etc. no matter how much I've tried to.

joas 05-11-2005 08:15 AM

I read somewhere that rap actually started with MC's scratching records and rhyming inbetween recordings they'd put on for audiences, of which most of the time were jazz recordings (since it was still fairly big). Just thought I'd throw that in.

Rap stems from teh j4zz oh noes!

And, I've liked it for a little while, or the beats at least-- it's cool to hear it thrown in with some more rock-style riffs and guitar solos over it can be pretty interesting to try (and sound pretty good).

Just check out the Quasimoto or Mr Lif stuff I posted. It doesn't sound at all like 50 Cent and it's new... just indie.
