Little Man being Erased 06-21-2005 04:43 PM
Uhm, Isn't the purpose of this thread to discover bands that especially not have drown in the scary river of mainstream?

EDIT: Hmm, why is my avatar more screwed up than it usually is?
Har har.

I have been listening to lots of Efterklang lately and have been in the mood for bands similar to them. I really dig their beats and electronic blips as well as the male/female vocals, all mixed with the other organic instruments... ah <3. I'm already familiar with M83, and Mum.

Wanker 11-22-2005 10:52 PM

I'll contribute these to the post rock category.

1-Speed Bike
The Durutti Column
Flying Saucer Attack
June Of 44
Mum
Rachel's
Set Fire To Flames
Talk Talk

Are you familiar with Four Tet? If not you should check out Rounds.

Minotaur Shock, Jackson & His Computer Band and Boards of Canada are what spring to mind, I 2nd Four Tet as well.

Holyed 11-23-2005 11:24 AM

Test Icicles

Just got the album, it is bloody good. Greattt live too.

MindlessPickle 11-23-2005 01:11 PM

I'd like to recommend Oh No! Oh My! (Previously named The Jolly Rogers). It's Indie Pop...

Happymeal 11-23-2005 02:24 PM

Edit'd.

I'm assuming the ones you recommended are electronica artists, 3rdplanet.

MindlessPickle 11-23-2005 04:19 PM

Bob Hund

A nice swedish rock band with nervous vocals and catchy melodies. You should probably put them under Alt/Indie Rock.

Dungen

Most people here seems to be familiar with them... I guess you could put them in Neo-Psych.

Echo & The Bunnymen

Hmm, to be honest I dont know if it would be better to put them in Alt/Indie Rock or Post-Punk...

José Gonzales

Great Singer/Songwriter who's made a brilliant cover of "Heartbeats", put him under folk, I guess.

Ah, thank you two :).
I have a few songs from Rounds, and they aren't bad, so I will be looking into the rest of the album. I also have Music Has the Right to Children, but I dunno, it doesnt really do me that much justice.

The other two bands I havent heard of, so I will check them out fo'sho.

Broadcast are cool.

Happymeal 11-23-2005 05:59 PM

Broadcast's new one I found really odd. Couldn't get into it much.

ATM 11-23-2005 06:00 PM

Eh, I think it is pretty catchy. You're talking about Tender Buttons right? If so, that's the only one I have heard.

Happymeal 11-23-2005 06:05 PM

Yeah, same. I think biografiend would like it.

biografiend 11-23-2005 11:00 PM

oohlala. more music for me <3. I am so glad I gave this thread the old bumpity-bump.

Sacksy 11-27-2005 01:30 AM

Have you guys noticed the pop-up ads in allmusic as of late?

it is hells of annoying

OrbDragon 11-27-2005 05:00 PM

Dead Moon - ('filthy' dark no nonsense indie rock)

The Cranes - (Dark eerie, noirish music, with a female singer (she sounds a bit like Gollum)

The Great Lake Swimmers (great lo-fi americana)

Timesbold (more americana...way better than The Great Lake Swimmers. Their latest effort Eye Eye is awesome)

Yawning Man (mixture between postrock and stoner)

MissAntartica (a band with influences of Wheat and Pedro the Lion, half Dutch, half English)

Elysian Fields (noirish pop with sultry singer Jennifer Charles)

Thomas Dybdahl (amazing singer songwriter with alot of vocal range)

Tub Ring (genre-hopping band reminscent of Mr Bungle)

The Delgados (great Scottish band with waltzy, heavily arranged pop songs)

The Bellrays (cool rock band with female soul singer)

The National Bank (features members of Jaga Jazzist and Thomas Dybdahl on vocals, comparable to Frou Frou and The Postal Service)

Kaada (amazing Norwegian composer, with a knack for sampling old recordings)

Motorpsycho (great Norwegian band, with symphonic and psycheldelic influences)

Bob Log III (cool slide guitarist who sings vulgar lyrics through a phone attached to his biker helmet)

Bjorn "Stringmachine" Berge (raspy voiced Norwegian blues guitarist with a knack for covering songs)

Lamb (lo-fi duo that mixes triphop, electronica with jazzy melodies)

Young Gods (amazing industrial band, great unique usage of sampling)

OrbDragon 11-27-2005 05:02 PM

Damn, broke the rules. I guess I'll be sitting in the corner for awhile with this thread :(

Happymeal 11-27-2005 05:23 PM

Senior citizens have their privileges. :p

I'll Take The Veil 11-28-2005 10:31 PM

I'm in the mood for a band along the lines of Bright Eyes/Rilo Kiley/Broken Social Scene. I know you can come up with some good stuff.

I've been into post-rock for a while and am loving it so if you want to throw in a few good bands in that genre it would be greatly apreciated.

3rdplanet 11-29-2005 10:42 AM

I was wondering if anyone could give me some band recommendations for bands that sound like Heavy Vegetable and These Arms Are Snakes/Gospel? Any particular ones worth looking at from the Post-Hardcore section (I don't want to have to check them all out...)?

Happymeal 11-29-2005 05:16 PM

For Heavy Vegetable check out Thingy(same vocals, who's also in Pinback). Drive Like Jehu could be worth checking out if you like those two.

Swami 11-29-2005 11:49 PM

These Arms Are Snakes... hrm probably Drive Like Jehu. Yeah, try DLJ and maybe even 90 Day Men, they're quite similar.

For Broken Social Scene, I would check out Metric, Stars, Apostle of Hustle, Do Make Say Think (post-rock), and Feist. They all have members who are in BSS. You should also check out the Arcade Fire, if you havent already.

Eyepatched 11-30-2005 04:22 AM

Dunno if anyone will like them but i have been enjoying the sounds of Boy Sets Fire Guess you could call it Alt/indie straight up. Recommended song is Waiting For The Punchline.

Thanks for the recommendations, will go about looking them up.

Neon Dub 12-02-2005 12:27 AM

Fly Pan Am (french indie rock with tape manipulations)
Gregor Samsa (dreamy rock, just awesome)
Joan of Arc (experimental indie)
Do Make Say Think (experimental rock with hints of jazz)
Medications (dischord band, robert fripp esq guitar lines)

Tangy zizzle 12-02-2005 01:01 AM

The Ponys:

For fans of this whole post-punk/indie explosion bull****. I say for fans of them because you people need to hear how it's really done. It's angular but poppy, moody but precise. Void of pretention, and just straight up and down AWESOME.
