Every member of Rush are musical geniuses. They all majored in music in college and they are incredible at their instruments.
I got a poster of their Discography on my basement wall. theres 27 albums out now,not including the 2/3 disc sets. Every 4 albums they release a live album, and i think they have about 3 official greatest hits. That still sums up to 15+ albums, which isnt bad for a revolutionary band.

I still think this thread should be official...
I have that poster too.

thunderzstruck 03-06-2005 09:15 PM

I have been wanting a Rush poster for some time but can never find any. :(

I know about the first minute to YYZ on guitar

There is a new rush poster out. Like said before it's their discography. It's not the best, but I saw the first Rush poster I've seen and bought it lol.
Well, personally I dislike Dream Theater because they seem too concerned with showing off their virtusoity and not making something appropriate to the song. I appreciate their talent, but their music gives off a very pompous vibe that rubs me the wrong way.

I never got that feeling from Rush. Their whole career is Neil Peart writing about something he thought was interesting and then Alex and Geddy taking their instruments and thinking "What would sound really cool in this song?"

In short, Dream Theater (to paraphrase Alexi Laiho) treat their music like a sport, in which they have to be better than everyone else. Whereas Rush treat their music like a game to see what kind of new and different stuff they can try on each album.

I have a few problems with your assessment of DT. Your first statement's all good; it seems to you that they are...etc and it rubs you the wrong way. I do not see how one can know the intensions of a band, nevermind how those intentions are relevant. In other words, how can one know that Dream Theater is not doing what they think is approproiate for a song. Second of all, their visible virtuousity may not be intentional, or at least the purpose of the song in itself, and plenty of bands may be trying to show off, but their skills limit them and they produce something that sounds like Rush or another band that does not seem "pretensious." In fact, Rush say that they are very competetive and push each other technically.

First of all, I used the word "seems" to show that I don't profess to be some sort of insider or psychic. I'm merely stating the feeling I get.

I haven't heard the solo album with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess yet, but I'm told it sounds far less self-indulgent than your typical Dream Theater song.

I stand by my stance that these guys have yet to write a song that hasn't bored me. When I listen to Rush, they clearly loved making that song. They didn't care if it wasn't one of their best, it was still fun to do. And it rubs off on the listener. Dream Theater... I just feel like I'm being talked down to. As I said, their music carries an incredibly pompous and self-indulgent vibe that just kills it for me.

thunderzstruck 03-07-2005 05:58 PM

When watching Rush live you can tell on their faces and by their body language they are enjoying themselves very much. DT just stands there...

But anyways anyone see the Rush cartoon videos on Rush's website? They're pretty funny.

Thunder Fingers 03-07-2005 06:11 PM

Geddy Lee is god! oh how an awsome bassist... i love his voice to, its somthing...personall over it, somthing wich many singers dont have... that also goes for geddys apperance... :p

Oh, it would be my dream to just get to play with a drummer and a guitarist half the talent of Neil and Alex... Geddy have an real nice "ofbounce" of Neils snare.. its realy cool to listen to, Cause the song jumps along..

And Rush is Not like Dream Theatre, Rush Is NOT boring... and there is such a more soul over Rush's Music, like, it can take you and just carry you away...

SUCH a great band! not to talk about geddys amazing sig bass! :D

Now i realy got the urge to listen to some rush...

Distant Echoes 03-07-2005 08:20 PM
Sweet. YYZ's a great song, but nothing pwns La Villa Strangiato's first guitar solo in terms of incredible skill. The live solo Lifeson pulls on "Exit: Stage Left" is even more breathtaking: that was shred way before Yngwie made it suck.
La Villa Stangiato's intro solo is one of the few things lifeson wasnt afraid to innovate in concert...along with the third part of 2112 and some fragments off YYZ and Tom Sawyer. It is amazing, i have a half gig of Rush on my comp right now, and half of it is Live Rush.

NP: Show Dont Tell (Different Stages)

MNbassist78 03-07-2005 08:29 PM

I love Rush. The first album of theirs I got was Moving Pictures which I bought about a year ago and still love. YYZ is a great instrumental. Geddy Lee is an amazing bass player. I just got the Rush in Rio DVD and it kicks ***. Anyone else seen it?
Boston is better. Boston was musical wizards. Listen to their new CD Coporate America before you judge them. Please.
You mean Boston are better (Learn grammar).

And are you kidding me? Are you trying to tell me Rush aren't geniuses?

They have more originality, skill and thought involved in all of their song's compared to Boston.

still like Boston though.

Johnnymario 03-07-2005 08:55 PM

One of the best bands that have that futurey sound!

Distant Echoes 03-07-2005 08:56 PM

Boston? Rush owns Boston.

How did that subject come up?

thunderzstruck 03-07-2005 09:09 PM

I don't know

dustyboy316 03-07-2005 09:22 PM

Haha me either, I saw that post. I can't believe someone would think Boston is a lot better musically though.

Plus Boston has 2 guitarist, so that may be why you think that. Rush only has 3 members...

thunderzstruck 03-07-2005 09:25 PM

Boston = band w/two good songs

Steerpike 03-07-2005 09:59 PM

Boston had one good album in them. Rush has their whole **** catalog. Case closed.

thunderzstruck 03-07-2005 10:19 PM

So true

symon 03-13-2005 08:18 PM

Rush is not that good. So what if they were musical majors? So what?

Steerpike 03-13-2005 08:32 PM
Rush is not that good. So what if they were musical majors? So what?
Is there even a slim chance that you'll use logical statements to back up your reasoning?

funkybeeatch14 03-16-2005 05:34 PM
Rush is not that good. So what if they were musical majors? So what?
Explain how they're not...they revolutionized modern prog, have one of the most underrated lyricists (Neil Peart), guitarists (Alex Lifeson), and Peart is alos one of the most skilled drummers since the death of Bonham. If you don't like them, state that its your opinion that you don't, and then come up with a logical answer to back it up...with posts like yours, you only sound like a fool.

Steerpike, you really need to listen to that "Evening with Jordan Rudess...etc." album. Keep in mind though that it was actually recorded a few years ago, so maybe Petrucci really HAS gone downhill for good, soloingwise. I'll post a song if you want.

Fair enough. I was just saying that one cannot come to the conclusion that a band is merely showing off (or pretensious, or pompous) because they excel technically, and that a band that sounds simpler is not trying to show off (or not pretentious or pompous).

willis2441 03-16-2005 06:48 PM

peart is bad@ss at drums

dt_opeth_death 03-16-2005 07:09 PM

**** it! Allow me first to defend Dream Theater. Back off, please! Dream Theater's goal is not to show off or make you feel inferior. They have tons and tons of hooks and great melodies that you will remember for a long time. I think that musical technicality has just been such a big part of their lives that they almost subconsciously incorporate it into their music. Anyway, you shouldn't be criticizing people that attempt to be the best they can possibly be.

Sorry about ^. Anyway, Rush is an amazing band that appeal to everyone. If you have not heard them, you should immediately go buy any one of their records. You don't even have to know the name of one. Go to you local record store now and look on the back for a copyright date. If you see anywhere from 1977-1981, that will probably be a good place to start. Neil is not overrated by the way.
