Stop calling Tom's solos crap

Tom Morello is good at soloing. You can't just think about what a solo sounds like. You have got to think about originality and how long he must have spent getting the synthesised bits right sounding. You try replicating the solo for Bulls On Parade or Sleep now in The Fire and i bet you wouldn't be able to do it.

Tom Morello's solos help define the Rage Against the Machine experience. They're awesome, and just because he's not shredding his *** off doesn't mean it's no good.
i don't know what is was or who it was by but when i was in florida that spring break i heard this ****ty solo it was only like 5 notes and it was on like 3 seconds long and it was by one of those new pop rock bands to i think im not sure and i don't really care
I know you said you dont care but the group is Bowling For Soup and I agree that solo as well as the song, SUCKS!!!!

shadow_stalker 11-12-2004 11:19 AM

Actually, yes, you CAN just think about what a solo sounds like. That's all that matters. He can spend all the time he wants thinking of stuff no-one's done before, but if it sounds like shit, I don't wanna hear it.

And, I don't know if you're aware of this - you actually picked two of his easiest solos as examples.

DekWannaBFlea 11-12-2004 11:37 AM
I fking hate Morellos solos. Yeah they were cool for the first 3-4 I heard but he just is relentless with the effects. Hes trying wayyy too hard man, just sh*t the hell up and play a normal solo already god dam.
Who the **** cares if he goes all out on effects? I don't here people bitching about Van Halen doing Eruption when the solo/song is most pointless solo i have ever heard. Just because someone wants to try to make something unique, different and unorthadox doesn't mean it is bad. I don't see people bitch about the vocals for Primus when ever they talk about them (horrible, horrible vocals).

I thought the Shadows of the sun solo was out of place when i first listened to it, but after a while it grew on me, and more time past and is now one of the best solos (IMO) off of Audioslave's s-t.

PLus there are plenty of horrible solos out there to be mentioned. I.E. Fred Durst's solo.

aerohead 11-12-2004 11:50 AM

if u've seen b4 wad fred durst (try)did at some live concert u'll know EXACTLY wad a bad solo is.

Red Stripe 11-12-2004 11:51 AM

jack white at the grammys last year, oh god was that awful

Triangle 11-12-2004 11:52 AM

Slayer - rainning blood

beyondthecircle 11-12-2004 12:24 PM

nothing gets worse than "drink, fight, and fuk" by GG Allin. i dont care what anyone says, this is the worst excuse for a solo i have ever heard. its so bad its awesome

radianteclipse 11-12-2004 01:36 PM

Looks like someone was sick when they taught spelling in school.

Tom Morello has a lot of good solos, but most of them are just a bunch of effects wankery. Still, he's a lot better at it than Adam Jones or Johnny Greenwood. But let me clarify that all three of those non-traditional guitarists can make some good solos, but they have also made their share of stinkers.

And as far as Nirvana goes, "Heart Shaped Box" and "In Bloom" contain far worse solos than "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but that one is still horrible as well.

TheFinalCut 11-12-2004 02:20 PM

i know the fred durst solo has been ripped to schreds...but IMO what makes it worse is that hes actually getting into it like leaning back on the stupid bend and like bobbing his head...

pathetic.....

80smetalkicksass 11-12-2004 02:35 PM

I dont really think Nirvana has terrible solos, yeah there no hendrix, or led zeppelin or zack wylde ....but they fit the songs...well some. and think about it...do u really think kurt gave a flying **** whether people were going to like them or not? probably not. There are many bad solos out there, and many amazing ones, but some solos arent meant for some songs, and you cant say that a perfectly good solo that is amazing like the beat it solo is crap just because it dosent fit, i thought it fit perfectly well, and that was an amazing solo. and whoever said free bird and metallica's enter sandman were bad...you seriously need some help.

YDload 11-12-2004 02:47 PM

You're right in saying that Kurt's solos fit Nirvana's music, because they are both really lame. I can respect Nirvana for changing the face of music, but I can't really say that the ends justify the means when they decided to stretch the limits of "good" music.

80smetalkicksass 11-12-2004 02:52 PM

Yeah im not a big nirvana fan i respect them for changing it as well, but i was fine with the classic rock and 80s metal we had going! I just think the solos fit, and thats pretty much it solos dont have to be extreme shredding all the time to be good...although they sound better that way to me :)

Malakian Worshipper 11-13-2004 12:30 AM

i think the worst solo is the one in 'show me how to live' by audioslave, its certainly morellos worst solo, theres no way it would work without the bass to back it up

slaytalica25 11-13-2004 12:34 AM

is it just me or does the solo to like a stone by audioslave really suck a$s? i hate that solo so much.

YDload 11-13-2004 01:25 AM
is it just me or does the solo to like a stone by audioslave really suck a$s? i hate that solo so much.
"I Am The Highway" is even worse.

m00sa 11-13-2004 01:27 AM

what u got against nirvana solos? so what if they arent as complicated as others but the main thing is if the solo sounds good no?

YDload 11-13-2004 01:32 AM
what u got against nirvana solos? so what if they arent as complicated as others but the main thing is if the solo sounds good no?
Yes, the main thing is that the solo sounds good, which Nivana's DO NOT.

Hammertime1506 11-13-2004 02:07 AM

OK why is everybody be dissin' Nirvana(kurt) guitar solos. Nirvana's songs sound awesome with a feedback Killin' solo. There songs would be weird if all of a sudden Kurt busted out with a face melting steve vai kind of solo.....FLAVOR FLAV!

Captain Jack Sparrow 11-13-2004 02:11 AM

Just about all Nirvana solos, and of course the classic Fred Durst solo where he butchered his way to the top of the fret board and back and seemed to actually think he was good.

AmericanWeiner 11-13-2004 02:22 AM

Wow. I heard a local band's guitarist solo'ing tonight, and it definatly didn't suck. I honestly believe he made the instrument speak english.

Mark. A 11-13-2004 02:25 AM

No guitar solo is the worst guitar solo, think about it.

drumforyourlife 11-13-2004 02:49 AM

Everyone needs to shut the F*** up about Tom Morello. His name does not even BELONG in this post. Think about it: he's gotten guitarist of the year at least 3 times. He started at around the same time as Tool, and formed Rage Against the Machine, a band that, even though they have since broken up, revolutionized the rock genre. The solos he chooses to construct for his songs fit with the flow of the song. Morello knows how to make his guitar pierce right into the soul, and he can pry out the deepest of emotions. His work with Audioslave only cements that theory, in that he can work around the amazing voice talent of Chris Cornell, and play solos that invoke sadness and loneliness, rather than his style with Rage, which was basically fight music.

Tom Morello is one of the best guitarists out there, and he could shred any of you f***ers in half if he wanted to. He chooses to use effects and different guitar techniques, and i choose to faithfully listen to them.

As far as the worst goes, i wouldn't know, because i don't listen to bands that suck. If i hear a song that sucks, i either tune it out or turn it off before it gets to the solo.

you people need to stop bashing professional guitarists, get a life, and learn to play yourselves. jealous f***s. get off your duff and prove me wrong if you think i am. make sure that if you're good enough to bash a professional musician, you're good enough and motivated enough to back it up.
