Can't forget Flogging Molly. Just great.

Bertha Cobain 08-22-2004 12:48 AM
Alanis Morisette is also quite poetic. The song Unsent was amazing off of Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
I agree, Alanis Morisette was quite poetic, her newer stuff just sounds sucky though

Big_Redburn 08-22-2004 09:09 PM

Have to mention Roger Waters

elcapitan 08-23-2004 01:31 AM

Only a few people have mentioned the most amazing lyric writer in the world. He would happen to be Davey Havoc from AFI. His lyrics and poems and the end of sing the sorrow"" are mind blowing. the poems are i suppose a hidden track at the end of "but home is nowhere"in case you were wondering.

Stonerbunny 08-23-2004 09:00 AM

the cure, Metallica (some of the old stuff), Silverchair, and Thin Lizzy of course.

MicMidas14 08-23-2004 09:54 AM

i'm a sucker for poetry.. so i'll have to say

chris cornell - audioslave/soundgarden/temple of the dog
brandon boyd - incubus (both cornell and boyd use imagery A LOT, and i like it :D )
alanis morrisette ( i'd kill for her vocabulary)
and kurt cobain ( his lyrics were always simple but that's the best kind of song)

MicMidas14 08-23-2004 09:56 AM

oooooo, and if anyone here is familiar with rufus wainwright, he has some truly unique stuff.

CR8CK 08-23-2004 10:28 AM

My Picks:

- Smashing Pumpkins (billy corgan is the best)
- Third Eye Blind (awesome lyrics to most any of their songs)
- Thrice
- Brand New
- Staind
- Incubus

TranquilMayhem 08-23-2004 01:35 PM

Zao, Norma Jean, Bestiary, Darkest Hour, mewithoutyou, Still Remains, As I Lay Dying, the old UnderOATH(and some new stuff), Josiah, Symphony in Peril, Officer Negative........whoa i think i named too many :amaze: ....oh well theyre all great :thumb:

IOWNU200 08-23-2004 02:58 PM

I would say fifteen lyrics are my favorite. Jeff writes about his personal esperiences of living on the street and political issues such as rascism and enviormental destruction. His lyrics really motivate you to do something about the world you live in

ProphecyBlack 08-23-2004 04:48 PM

Best Lyrics

Out of the various bands I listen to I'd have to say;

Nightwish
Tristania
and Dargaard.

But Nightwish - well aren't they just the absolute perfect all rounders.

SaM_tHe_DrUmMeR 08-23-2004 06:01 PM

I say Brand New, the ones on "Deja Entendu" has amazing lyrics

Civer 08-23-2004 06:06 PM

I have to go with four way tie: Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Davey Havok (AFI, hey, at least *I* like his lyrics.), Maynard James Keenan (Tool and A Perfect Circle) and Geoff Rickley (Thursday.) I just love them all. Reznor's lyrics, while sung with such emotion, are interesting to look at, and sometimes beautiful (I cannot get over the overall beauty of The Great Below.) Davey was the guy who got me into writing lyrics again, not to mention how much I love his style (which goes for all of them.) He and Rickly, especially, seem a little cryptic, with some rather bizarre phrases.

Keenan is just awesome. That's really all I can say.

Although, out of all those, Trent Reznor is my all time favorite. His lyric style is varied (short angry songs [All of "Broken"], long, pensive songs with few lyrics ["The Day the World Went Away"], et cetera.)

The_Red_Death 08-23-2004 10:43 PM

Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio, Davey Havok of AFI, and I also love the lyircs in a lot of Coheed and Cambria songs. And there are too many other great writers to mention. I just chose the ones that popped into my head.

EDIT: Can't forget Adam Lazarra of Taking Back Sunday.

Silver jet

There's a still in the night
a tuneless moonlight
just the I-need-you-and-here's-whys of
snoring Gords and Cheryls
there's a heron outside
in violet light
there's an urge to go, a shadow
a heightened air of peril
your heart jumps to
and my heart jumps too
I think, to myself "I don't really know my heart"
and as you whisper 'me too'
a silver jet roars overhead
rocks the nocturne all everglade
and grey sheers
silver jet, so far off already
fought the hot spurs off all the way
to Cape Spear

it's quiet again
when a car like Big Ben
the radio dopplerin'
'...'for all you Gregory Peck fans...
-Let Us Now Praise Famous Men-
to take some pressure off all the wonderous
to fight' and
your heart jumps to
and my heart jumps too
as if the Wolves of Northhumberland themselves
were rumoured to be en route
silver jet, way overhead
you're an archipelago, a satellite,
a green star
silver jet, so far off already
with your I-need-you-and-here's-why
flying to the next part

Your heart jumps to
and my heart jumps too
I'm thinking, to myself, 'packing,is a secret heart'
and as you whisper, 'me too'
siler jet roars overhead
silver jet flying to the next part
silver jet so far off already
silver jet, a satellite, a green star
silver jet way overhead
silver jet evergladed grey sheers
silver jet, so far off already
silver jet Clayqout sound to Cape Spear

Thats not even their best.
