Helloween didn't, kai hansen just made it worthwhile to emulate :) Walls of Jericho/mini-LP is probably the best disc I own in terms of replay value and entertainment, alongside technicality.

Children Of Bodom is awesome. They're like a Death/Power Metal mix that sounds heavy as **** but still very melodic. The guitar work form Alexi is superb too.

I heard some of the new Dream Evil CD on the radio last night. It sounded a little generic but I liked it. I think it was from a new CD I missed the introduction unfortunatly.

Their new disc is the "Book of Heavy Metal. If you order it from TheEndRecords.com, you can get the limited edition with the DVD (live + backstage stuff). It's generic becuase that's how they like to do things. They're mocking themselves, making a huge stink about being "just another band" yet they're on top of the world becuase of it. It's ironic.

I've recently discovered power metal after a few years of meaning to do so (I got an Iced Earth song on a random compilation cd and liked it alot) and when I got broadband I made a point of downloading songs from the following bands:

Iced Earth
Dragonforce
Helloween
Sonata Arctica

After reading this thread I'm going to sample some of the other bands mentioned then when I get some money go out and buy some albums and stop being a cheap downloading sod.:)

Yep!! Go back to the other Power Metal Thread too (just do a forum search for power metal). tons of bands and links and mp3's to look through. It really is a huge genre. It's just that the bands dont' get much exposure cuz it's happy metal. go figure.

Because close-minded people look at some of the better known bands of the genre, see people who look "gay", hear high voices ("gay") and happy music, and dismiss it as..well, gay.

All the popular metal from the early days had higher voices as well. Ozzy, led zeppelin, quiet riot, motley crue etc. It's that there isn't any angst attached to it in power metal and the teenage crowd tends to dismiss happy music as gay...when homosexuality and music have nothing to do with each other 99% of the time.

Anyone not familiar with Helloween? Kai Hansen of Gamma Ray fame wrote most of the songs and was the inspriation for dozens of power metal bands to follow afterwards. The Walls of Jericho changed metal forever.
