Kick arse thread, I've only skimmed the surface of ska (mighty might bostones, Catch 22, RBF, OpIvy...) but (i might of mist it) you failed to mention the swingin' utters!

Once again kick arse thread.

Kithkin 08-02-2004 11:55 PM

I think that some of the files I uploaded have been taken down by the place I uploaded them so they might not be accessable.

WorkingClassHero 08-09-2004 03:35 PM

How about that MoonSka bankrupt mullarkey? A shame, MoonSka US seemed to have much better bands than MoonSka Europe.

the-UK-ska-scene 08-09-2004 03:52 PM

Bankrupt, wha?

Have you been to my website, Mr. Working Class? You'd be helpful...

Kithkin 08-09-2004 10:55 PM

Moonska went bankrupt yeah. It sucked. I forget why but if you seach google its not hard to find articles about it.

WorkingClassHero 08-10-2004 05:52 AM

Yeah, they took on too many bands that didnt make money, opened too many offices, the usual story. It was cool while it lasted though. Im always looking at Jump Up's website nowerdays, you seen that one? Pretty cool, but international orders take forever. Just buy the stuff of Amazon usually.

WorkingClassHero 08-10-2004 05:57 AM

Speaking of MoonSka, and therefore Bucket Hingley, does anyone really rate the Toasters that much? I bought their best of CD and there are good tracks there, Talk is Cheap, Decision at Midnight, but there are a whole load of **** tracks too. Out of all the ska CDs i own, i would say its probably one of the worst. Its probably because im going off thirdwave in general...

the-UK-ska-scene 08-10-2004 03:01 PM

Thanks for coming to my website man, and thanks for making the forum a bit more interesting :) Keep up making the decent threads, I'm afraid I can't login there, though (technical problems) so I will tell you here thanks :)

Bucket's a decent enough bloke, was emailing him a while ago about some Toasters dates, and he was all-round helpful and polite. He's just started a new agency with Sean from Pama International actually, they've got these bands on the roster already:

The Toasters
New York Ska Jazz Ensemble
Pama International
Victor Rice
King Django

Looking pretty good there. And they're booking these tours already:

Pama International - November/December'04
The Toasters- 20-30 April 2005

Which I'm pretty excited about. Hey that's a point Kith, is Pama International on your band list? Sorry, I'm too lazy to look :upset:
Common Rider - What Operation Ivy should have become. **** Rancid. This is the Singer from Op Ivy's newer band. Unfortunatly they broke up not too long ago. But the music is still amazing. What you loved about Operation Ivy is here (brilliant lyrics and good basslines and great ska influenced music). The band is all good musicians, not amazing ones but good ones. The guitar work is simple but catchy, the bass lines are good but not overdone and the lyrics are what you would expect from an Operation Ivy songwriter. Song: Classics of Love ACE .
I love Common Rider! Jesse Michaels is probably my favorite lyricist of all time next to Joe Strummer. I think his lyrics really took a good turn on Last Wave Rockers. The lyrics he wrote for Op-Ivy were incredible too, but they were really depressing and just made our entire generation seem completely hopeless ( this my unfortunately be true in some ways, but you have to have a bit of hope that things will get better). I still think they're great lyrics and on par with the ones he wrote for Common Rider, but I prefer his common rider stuff just because its so much more positive. His lyrics always seem really honest, even at some points when they almost start to seem like sappy love songs. This is unity music was an amazing album too. Of course, the music on both these albums is excellent too. I find both albums to be very powerfully emotional and the lyrics and music both complement each other very well to achieve this. I really like almost all of the bands you mentioned, but I really love Common Rider and felt like I had to write something about them. One of my favorite bands

No, they aren't this is the first I've heard of them.

King Django is amazing. though not surprising that he would be on something with the toasters. NYSJE... does that mean they are going to be back together or just re-releaseing stuff?

As for the Toasters. They have some really good stuff and some ok stuff. Don't Let the Bastards Grind you Down is the only one I have and its a great cd. But I have a bunch of their music downloaded and I don't really listen to it that much.

They are supposed to be a great live band but I haven't been able to see them yet even though they tour my area all the time. They are usually 2-3 hours away on a weekday which doesn't fly usually. They never hit my college town:(

And yeah. Common Rider is great. Jessie broke away from the OpIvy sound, took more from reggae and broke free from the depressing outlook. I put them on at parties because its music that is hard not to at least like.

Thanks, i was actually worried i was usurping the whole thing... And those people do seem mighty protective of their ska-punk

Oh yeah, im not faulting him at all, i mean he did start MoonSka. I just dont ratehis band that much, if i had to put my finger on something i would say, like alot of things from the mid-late 1980s, the music sounds dated.

Wasnt Pama a label? It definately was in the UK, they were big competitors with BlueBeat.

emoboy 08-11-2004 06:26 PM

If you like the poppier Reel Big style of ska, you should check out I voted for Kodos. They are a ska band out of wisonsin that my band played with a while back. www.iv4k.com

my5thname 08-11-2004 08:11 PM

Forgotten ska bands
Goldfinger(only ther Hang-Ups albulm)-great use of trumpets, catchy guitar riffs and bass lines are bouncy. Their only memorble ska song would be Superman, the one song from tony hawk 1, also appeared in Not ANother Teen Movie. They have now gone to punk. ANother song that people mightve heard is their punk song on tony hawk 4-spokesman...not great. Also the most popular would be 99 red balloons...or if you are into comedic songs. wayne gretzky

Also Authority Zero..ive only heard one song, but they are definite ska

Authority Zero is a great band. But they aren't ska. Ska is but one of the styles they play and it isn't their main style. They are more of a punk band with a wide range of influences.

And I didn't forget goldfinger. There are just a lot of bands I didn't bother putting up there because they, like goldfinger, gave up ska when it stopped being popular.

Kithkin 08-12-2004 02:08 AM

I think I listened to them on Purevolume once. They were pretty good.

Jas, whats wrong with Skascene?

WorkingClassHero 08-12-2004 04:43 AM

Ah, there were two other Goldfinger ska songs i liked - Carlita and Need to Know. Although its a long time since i heard them now, i might not even think of those two as ska now...
Jas, whats wrong with Skascene?
 I don't know, what was up with it?

I'm pretty tired, haven't been online in a couple days, I think it's fixed now though, right?

I had this awesome party last night, so much good music was played. I was proud of the good music.

But then I woke up this morning and my friend Finch had got on the piano and was playing his own version of "I Will Survive" with one note and singing pretty badly. Oh man.

Kithkin 08-12-2004 10:07 PM

Yeah, it was down for a brief period of time.

The best party my apartment threw that wasn't an iron chef was a carribean party with all first wave ska music.

We danced, did the limbo and drank for a long time.

My girlfriend at the time who drove up 2 hours from home wouldnt dance though. Twas annoying.

WorkingClassHero 08-13-2004 07:09 AM

The best party (that i can connect to ska) was my sixth form leaving party, where they played Baggy Trousers (the only ska song any "Djs" carry with them it seems) and i got to see my ex-rudeboy head of sixth skank!

the-UK-ska-scene 08-13-2004 03:19 PM

Yeah my party started with a mix CD I'd made for no reason a couple weeks ago, it had stuff like Catch-22 and Streetlight and had all my favourite bands on it. That seemed to get everyone pumped. That was good, because I had this huge inflatable assault course in my garden and they were running around on it like headless chickens.

A friend of mine, being a headless chicken

And then when everyone was chilling inside later on, some ex-skater-punk guys who are now into hip-hop and stuff found one of my Sublime CDs (40oz), so we ended up listening to that, which was perfect to just hang out and talk to. It was strange trying to fit that many people into my house, though.

Good times.

Oh Kith I wanted a word about your background of ska thing, a friend of mine raised some questions about it. And it seems I'm too lazy to email now. Oh, and check your LJ feedback, I asked you a question... I think it was a reply to your most recent update

deejuks2 08-13-2004 09:19 PM

You can ask any questions here if you're lazy. I'd rather it be accurate than anything else.

I think Goldfingers most famous song is Open Your Eyes.. oh yeah has anyonw heard of Uncle Brian?

Kithkin 08-15-2004 10:26 AM

Yeah, english band right?

Ive got a few of their songs
Yeah, english band right?

yeah postcards was there best i think.. however my mates band was lucky enough to support them at a gig and i have to say Uncle Brian sounded less ska and much ore pop punk! :upset: probably from supporting bowling for soup on there US tour, looks like its had some less than favourable side effects :upset:

mattlewis53 08-16-2004 11:00 PM

Awesome thread, I just checked out some of those bands and I really like it. Why didn't someone tell me about this whole ska thing before?
