My flatmate kept a steady line of "Tool's music is contrived and pretentious" throughout the whole year, but I'm pretty sure he hadn't actually heard much by them. He kept insisting their music was only there as a vehicle for them to show off their virtuosic brilliance on their instruments, and his views on what is and is not pretentious I tend to discount anyway.
Maybe he has them confused with Dream Theater. I don't recall Adam Jones doing any sweep arpeggios or Justin Chancellor doing any two-handed polyrhythmic tapping. They're just a progressive grunge band, really.

But I like them.

I have never heard them be called that but it is actually quite a good description of them :thumb:

superpeer 06-25-2005 05:39 PM

Yeah, it's hard to say.

First of all, maynard's singing, I hate it. I think the music is boring, nothing memorable, so yeah, I can't think of a reason to like them. Plus all the fanboys, always announcing them to be the best band ever. :)

Same goes for Dream Theater, actually.

That's a shame, I like both bands.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-25-2005 05:41 PM

Yeah, I was thinking his description sounded more like Dream Theater too. :p

Grunge? I suppose at moments, but it's hard to classify them as one genre, as they cover so much ground throughout their songs.

Wow, this is turning into the Tool thread. :p

Shall we get some cover talk started?

Moses 06-25-2005 05:46 PM
Shall we get some cover talk started?
I posted in the Tool thread that I might be able to get some work done on the vocals tonight.

superpeer 06-25-2005 05:47 PM
That's a shame, I like both bands.
Half of mx does. Vocals are weird, they don't really make the song, usually. Like if the music is boring or just bad, vocals usually don't make up for it. (Maybe Patton?)

But they are like the key to the liking of a band, both Tool and Dream Theater have horrible vocalists, in my opinion. Same goes for Extreme metal newbies, how many posts do you read saying "I like the music, not the vocals"

Vocals are like the surface, if you don't like them, there's not much chance you'll go through to the deeper part.

Yet average vocals, can work perfectly in a song, I could even say, go unnoticed and be part of a great song. So It's important and not important. Weird. Vocals.

Yeah. /tl;dr

Bartender 06-25-2005 05:49 PM
I can't say they are virtuosic, with the exception of danny.
Exactly.
Either way, that would have nothing to do with their music being pretentious, would it? How can music be pretentious!?!
Well of course music can be pretentious.

By way of example though, his idea of pretentious was, often, a solo.

Moses 06-25-2005 05:50 PM

It's just personal tastes. I really didn't like James Labrie's voice at first but then it grew on me a little more. Same with Maynard but in less time, and now I like it alot.

!!!!!PAGE 666!!!!!

Bartender 06-25-2005 05:51 PM

I like Maynard's voice. LaBrie's often (for the most part, basically) is just incredibly annoying, though.

clearvision 06-25-2005 05:56 PM

I've always loved Maynards voice...

I hate labrie with a passion, I tend to just ignore him. I can't stand tracks with his OTT singing, Caught in a web springs to mind.

Hehehe...how ironic, my ex's sister also got messed about with by her significant other today...

superpeer 06-25-2005 05:56 PM

Well, obviously I'm aware that music is subjective. But there are bands who deal with more vocal issues than others, no doubt. Some people just have a very distinctive voice, which can be godly to one, extremely irritating to others. While other bands almost never deal with a "I don't like the vocals" comment.

Alice in Chains
Tool
Dream Theater
Smashing Pumpkins
Megadeth
Cryptopsy
...

I dislike most high vocals, though. So most of Power Metal is out, things like AC/DC (bleurgh) and loads of other hard rock and traditional heavy metal.

The only band you listed that I don't care much for is Smashing Pumpkins.

who likes to steal stuff in here?

clearvision 06-25-2005 06:03 PM

No, just never really got into them. Also the guitar tone is horrible to my ears.

ITP: I reply to everything since I last posted.

Hey WA Jake: when everyone says they've moved on from the bullshit, you don't need to ask people for their permission to retell what has gone on. No one cares anymore, everyone has buried their perspective hatchets, everyone is essentially cool with each other once again, and you want to pull the skeletons out of the closet again? I'm sorry, but considering we've talked about moving on and not bringing up the past over MSN and not through the thread, why would you elect to bring all the bullshit back up again? Are you a master storyteller? :)

Come on. Everyone has forgotten about it, and everyone has started fresh, and it's evidenced in everyone's posting. So, stop with the storytelling, please. No one cares enough now to invest their time to bring the skeletons out of the closet. Your bias shines through when you say, "Hey so-and-so did you read about what's happened the past few pages ? It all started when...", but we're all on the same level again. Everyone has moved on. Just get over it like everyone else has. There are no brownie points on teh Intranet. :)

In regards to Tool: I only have Lateralus :o

It's a great album from what I've listened to so far, though. I like it. I'm not going to be as knowledgeable about them as AJIG is, obviously, because I focus on other bands. You ask AJIG about Tool, he'll give you the 100% correct, no-nonsense answer. You ask me about bands I'm very familiar with, and I'd do the same.

But yeah, go Tool *pom-pom*

///

In regards to Dream Theater: I like them as well and am a bit more familiar with them than I am with Tool /obvious statement

I recall reading somewhere (probably on MX, where all good things happen) that LaBrie is classically trained in opera, and had major throat problems on the Awake tour, hence his weaker, I guess, vox on the following albums and live and such.

But yeah, go Dream Theater *pom-pom*

///

In response to daven: I don't steal stuff. I don't see the point when I can go out and buy things because I have money.

///

Ali: welcome back :)

I'm not sure if you saw my post to you in that one thread, but thanks very very much for taking the time to YSI that mySpace song for me. I genuinely appreciate it, and it sounds great. Grant it, it comes out only the left channel, but it was definitely a very kind gesture, and it sounds great mono anyway, so again, thank you for wasting your time to do that for me, I'm very grateful.

Dancin' Man 06-25-2005 07:29 PM

Daven - nobody likes to steal. I do it and do it quite well but if I could afford everything I need/want I would pay for it. I now have a job and plan on buying much mroe than I was before I had a job. I also like to consider myself a thief with morals, although it's just my own twisted justification of taking only from huge corporations that will not be harmed by my taking of their merchandise and they are better equipped to catch me because of the security they can afford. I would never steal from a a small or local business. *sigh* I guess my justification just makes me that much worse of a person.

Oh ok. Even then, Tool doesn't do much soloing as a whole. Either way, it's all opinions, when they be informed ones or not isn't up for me to decide.

Jumbucket- I would reply to something here, but It would be better off not to.

thats bad luck, and weird justice.

Dancin' Man 06-25-2005 07:39 PM

It's a risk you take when you steal. I am always fully aware of the consequences. That is one reason I am very careful and frequently leave stores I planned on shoplifting from empty handed. I am entirely unwilling to walk out hoping and so I don't. If I leave a store, I am entirely confident in myself and what I am doing.

^not wierd justice. You break the law you pay. If he had to pay the same ammount that he was stealing, then it would be incentive to steal because if you get caught, there really isn't any negative repercussion.

heavy metal kid 06-25-2005 07:41 PM

i never thought of stealing something, that's going low for me.

the end of page 666

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-25-2005 07:41 PM

What kinds of things do you mean when you say 'steal.'

Steal as in shoplifting, or steal as in pirating music?

Or...Steal as in grand theft auto..? :shifty:

Dancin' Man 06-25-2005 08:14 PM

Steal as in shoplifting, or steal as in pirating music?

Those two excpet we were talking about shoplifting.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-25-2005 08:31 PM

Ohh ok.

I don't shoplift. I do steal quite a bit of music though. If I didn't have such a faggotesque internet connection, I'd be much more of a Pirate.

:emo:

I've definitely thought about shoplifting, but I've never gotten the balls to do it. I steal from my school a lot. Oh, and also, tons of roadsigns and for some reason, I have lots of floormats from various fast food restaraunts. refl

Kage 06-25-2005 08:32 PM

I used to be in to shoplifting, but I'm done with that.
