You guys can probably unsticky the 100 Greatest Drummers results thread. It's basically a general discussion now focusing on vocalists.

Seems illegal. another "can you name me" thread. |
Just merged it into the Recommendations thread.

Whenever I come into the R&M forum, I find it a daunting task trying to merge into the conversation, as with the ridiculously high amount of official band threads and official threads, the forum does not feel very welcoming to me. The fear of discussing tired topics in the official band threads has prevented me once or twice from making a post in one of them. So basically, from an outsiders viewpoint, I believe there are far too many of the official band threads. I actually linked my friend to the R&M forum a few months ago, but he didn't join because he found it a daunting layout.
I mean, when I see posts like this, it does make me :-/ at the idea of all these official band threads. I apologise if you get this type of suggestion all the time, I'm pretty darn certain I wouldn't be the first to bring this up. |
 thats my post.
about your view about MX: i sometimes feel the same. i post only in some "band threads" but in most, who i don't visit often i just don't post cause for the reason you mentioned and every topic has been discussed 1000x times (how you have read in the CoB thread - i think MRDuCran said it). but on the other side there don't exit an "official"- band threads ... they are only at the top cause a lot of ppl listen to them and post in there. f.e. the NIN thread... we don't have many NIN-fans on this board here but from time to time it gets bumped. but if i would be you, i would just post when you have a question or anything... just do it. |
 thats my post.
Haha, sorry, didn't mean to single you out or anything.
about your view about MX:
Not really about Mx, just R&M really.
i sometimes feel the same. i post only in some "band threads" but in most, who i don't visit often i just don't post cause for the reason you mentioned and every topic has been discussed 1000x times (how you have read in the CoB thread - i think MRDuCran said it). but on the other side there don't exit an "official"- band threads ... they are only at the top cause a lot of ppl listen to them and post in there. f.e. the NIN thread... we don't have many NIN-fans on this board here but from time to time it gets bumped. but if i would be you, i would just post when you have a question or anything... just do it.
I can see why some bands such as Metallica, Tool etc would have their own thread. But many bands that I've heard of, but would not think of as a favourite of most, have their own thread. Just seems to me like each one has its own little community. Whether justified or not, I've never really felt that welcome in the many 'official' band threads. To me it just feels like a limitation to discussion, where you have to keep close to the subject matter. Rather than letting each thread go off in its own direction. Edit: See for example the DT thread where I tried to discuss the complexity of their music vs. the emotion. Had a nice litttle debate for half a page, but already its back to Octavarium and "it had some nice songs" type comments. |
Yeah, we had this complaint a while back. I closed the old Pink Floyd thread, and Amit and Eccles posted a few times, saying it was good that the thread was smaller, since it was easier to jump into the conversation. However, they stopped posting pretty soon afterwards, and the net-effect wasn't really all that positive, or negative.
I think the status quo will remain having the established threads, simply for simplicity, but if people want to restart specific threads, they can. I know that the classic rock one was restarted by popular vote. But yeah, I know a lot of threads don't have a problem with repeated discussion, so you shouldn't feel too nervous about getting a flame or two. |

Whereby there are a few always-on-the-front-page threads, then a whole bunch of threads that go on for 100-200 posts on differing topics. See look at their forum they've got interesting threads, that provide new discussion with each thread: Music Quest ! How knowledgeable are you? Describe bands obtusely Pitchfork Music Festival Alt-Indie Radio So basically just a whole bunch of threads, with no specific band threads. Which is far from R&M, where most of the page consists of 1000+ post band threads and a few on-going 1st-page threads. I find the A&I layout allows such a wide breadth of discussion, whereas the R&M format is limiting, and less appealing to newbies. In my mind, it harbours the same discussion over and over again. Whereas A&I evolves day-to-day. Not that A&I is perfect or anything. I also acknowledge that R&M's high traffic makes it very hard to maintain such an unformatted thread-layout. Edit: And as further proof for my edit in my last post, check out the DT thread again. The small moment of 'new discussion' (sorry if that sounds arrogant), has gone back to insults and talk about how good Octavarium is. |
I'm not saying that R&M should go back to the ***OFFICIAL*** threads, but having [band name] [insert lame title here] threads can be rather tedious. Sometimes the band isn't even in the title, and since some people don't use the search button, it makes things difficult. Further, if I searched for a band like Slipknot, the official Slipknot thread wouldn't be the first hit - it would more than likely be the community threads, or even other band threads, and then the Slipknot one.
Even if you search 'Slipknot,' their official thread doesn't even show up on the first results page. I know that these major band threads are linked in the rules, but as many of you are aware, not many people read the rules. Plus, with all those links to all those series articles (only one or two of which are still active), there's not really a point in having all of those linked, either, is there? |
Your words trouble me, young Daniel and Jim. I shall consult with the other Elders and bring back our decision. However, no matter what our verdict, it will still be a dark day for R&M.
i wanted to ask if i could start a soad hiatus poll and if so how would i go about doing this
Well, if you're going to make a poll, check at the very bottom below the textbox (where you're going to type in stuff that people will see in post #1). Click on "Add poll to this thread," type in the number of options, and then hit "Submit thread." You will then be taken to a new screen in which you type your question and the options. Once you're finished, the poll will be added to the thread within a couple minutes. Of course, I don't know if there's a SOAD thread running around already, but in any event that there's not, that's how you'd add a poll.
Your words trouble me, young Daniel and Jim. And it's almost a guarantee that every single thread with an "established" status does not have band-related discussion in every single post. I mean, it'd be quite difficult to make a thread and have that happen, but they're merely "Community Threads For Fans of [band]." |

delete the entire forum and start all over? :p |
Close the threads and let's start making individual threads again. The thing that bothers me is that if my favorite thread (CR) is closed and all the regs will be scattered throughout the forum making threads on individual bands so :-/

How practical would that be? We would just see more random threads pop up. I personally think things are fine here. As for the conversation thing, one normally does not jump into a verbal conversation that is happening between others and change the topic, so why should an internet conversation be any different. |
