Congrats on the 3,000, Simple Man.

Johnny B. Good 01-12-2005 08:34 PM

Does anybody else hate it when your parents pronounce things wrong or say the wrong name and do it constantly?

Bartender 01-12-2005 08:35 PM

Example?

Simple Man 01-12-2005 08:36 PM
Does anybody else hate it when your parents pronounce things wrong or say the wrong name and do it constantly?
My parents don't really do that, but I get severely annoyed when I am asked the same question over and over and over.
Example?
Like Jethra Tell instead of Jethro Tull
No shi

/sorry, but it's true
I'm thinking that the only reason they didn't pay me much by the hour was because it was seven weeks of summer. I ended up getting $650 plus a $50 bonus.

Bartender 01-12-2005 09:36 PM

Yes, staying up this late if you're in England can't be a good idea.

This essay won't start itself :(

Riva 01-12-2005 11:22 PM
I should probably get one, but I know I probably won't.
Bartender 01-12-2005 11:26 PM

Don't worry, it's my parents money that I'm using up. Not the state's.

Riva 01-12-2005 11:30 PM

Congratulations.

Riva, why aren't you on MSN?

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:17 AM

Good morning gentlemen. Whats happening?

Bartender 01-13-2005 12:19 AM

I'm still struggling on with this essay. I've done rather ridiculously little work on it so far, considering how long I've spent doing it. What are you up to?

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:23 AM

Is this the same essay you were talking about like 3 days ago? I'm at work as always, not doing anything.

Bartender 01-13-2005 12:33 AM

Nope, this'll be a different essay. Last night, I did two essays, which were in for what is now yesterday. Now I'm doing the third, which is in for what is now today.

It's taking so much longer, though, because it's much more difficult (for me) than either of them was.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:37 AM

Yeah I don't miss school at all. What class would we be dealing with here? If its:
TOBACCO THEORY 101
CONTEMPORARY ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION or
GUITAR SKILLS PROCRASTINATION

Then I can help you out quite a bit.

Bartender 01-13-2005 12:38 AM

Sadly, it's Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion. Should Abraham be admired? is the question. Thanks for the offer, though.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:43 AM

Ouch, I see where that can hurt. Abraham, what was his deal again, something with his sons? By the way, do have any way giving back neg rep received, cause I got neg repped over a harmless joke.
http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6231149#post6231149

Post 4995. He neg repped me for saying that. I mean come on, have a sense of humor ehh?

Bartender 01-13-2005 12:50 AM

It wasn't Lord Abortion who neg repped you for it (I just checked), but I won't say who did. I don't think it's fair. They shouldn't really have done so though, no.

Abraham was the father of faith, and also the father of Isaac. God told him to take Isaac to the top of a mountain in Moriah and kill him, as an offering to God. Abraham took him there, and got so far as drawing the knife in preparation, before God, via an angel, told him he didn't really have to kill him, and provided a lamb for sacrifice instead. And, with reference to Kierkegaard and Kant, I have to discuss whether Abraham is admirable.

It's a 1,500 word essay too, which is annoying, even though it's not particularly long. 1,000 words I can deal with; it's a little short, so you have to condense your points and such, but I can usually manage it fine. But a 1,500 word essay is annoying, because it means you can't just do 1,000, but the extra 500 doesn't give you enough leeway to really expand on what you would have done for the 1,000. Stupid essays.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 12:54 AM

I'd say he difinitley is. I mean, his faith was so strong that he was willing to kill his own son for God.

Bartender 01-13-2005 01:00 AM

That's (vaguely) what Kierkegaard thinks. But from the point of view of morality and ethics (and Kant), Abraham is just a murderer.

Think about it; many priests extol the greatness of Abraham's actions (hence, the father of faith) in sermons and such, because he was strong enough not to shy away or deny the task set to him, depsite the difficulty it brings, because it was set him by God. But imagine what, for example, those same priests would think if they caught wind that a member of their own congregation was planning to follow Abraham's example. As Kierkegaard put it, the preacher "perhaps would go to the man, he would muster all his ecclesiastical dignity and shout "You despicable man, you scum of society, what devil has so possessed you that you want to kill your own son?"

And so, it is debated.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 01:06 AM

Ah, interesting. I didn't think of it that way. He wants to please God, but at the same time is committing a horrible sin of murder. The question is definitley raised. Well, obviously you have to present both sides of the issue, but if it were me, I'd kill him. And I say that with truth. By the way, where is everyone? If people don't start posting a bit, it's going to be a long night.

Bartender 01-13-2005 01:20 AM

I've no idea. It's getting to the point where no one is online. 7:18am for me, so it's mostly too early for people where I am and in Europe, and it's mostly getting too late for people in America, both East and West. It's coming up on 5pm in Australia, so they should all be starting to come on in the next few hours.

I would post more about this Abraham thing, but I suddenly realised I'd rather be typing it into my essay, than onto MX.
