what a crazy night
I wiped my Zune and I'm completely reloading it with music. I lost all of my Primus, Gogol Bordello, and a good portion of my Tech N9ne, so I guess I'll have to go back through and obtain all of them again. Also, I had a beer and listened to dubstep while doing it. Crazy night for me, man.

What's going on in your night?

BenJammin 11-26-2011 10:20 PM

Tonight, I'm not doing much but drinking some.

Last night, we threw a huge party for my roommate's graduation from her MA programme. So in typical fashion, we got really drunk on cheap malt liquor, smoked a lot of weed, and ended up doing opium.

Sablate McNuff 11-26-2011 11:17 PM

Never done any opiates before. How was it?

BenJammin 11-26-2011 11:33 PM

I'm not entirely sure I could pull that specific feeling out from everything else that was in my body. I do know that I ended the night by walking a girl home, and then I got lost trying to get back to my place, so I wandered around the streets at 3am yelling at one recurring street (I was walking in circles) and having loud conversations with myself.

I reckon that was mostly the booze.

gaslight 11-27-2011 01:07 AM

How can one street intersect with itself, I must be at the nexus of the universe

Around I suppose. Just no one ever responds to my posts anymore so I might post 3-4 times a month, and that's only if I find something real fun. I mostly just read during downtime.

We have an intersection of Lake Pleasant Rd and Lake Pleasant Pkwy, but other than that, Phoenix tends to be lain out very well

I have not. I'm very particular about my mp3's being in 320kbps format, and since I didn't come across an online source with them, I'm actually going to go to the music store and pick up an album or two. Any suggestions on which ones?

Jody LeCompte 11-27-2011 04:41 PM

In the bass forum? Probably only in the threads where other old lurkers pop up.

Not as much as I would be liking at the moment with several broken bones in my right hand and a few more months to go. But once everything heals up all nice and I kick the rust off, I've got a little metalcore outfit I play bass for.

very, very nice.

my company phone came in today and I now realize that having a smartphone actually makes me hate smartphones all the more. stupid fucking blackberry.

fatbandit 11-28-2011 08:25 AM

yeah, there's nothing wrong with 192kbps mp3s for me tbh. they all sound fine on my earphones, which is 90% of my music listening probably. some music just sounds shit quality regardless of the bitrate.

if they carry POS stuff in stores, I can only recommend Never Better, because it's the only album of his I have ;) but it's good!

Convectuoso 11-28-2011 01:30 PM

With 192kbps, you can only really hear the difference on good speakers. What 192kbps does to the audio is only really heard in the extremities of the highs and low, without a full bandwidth playback system you aren't likely to hear the difference in ear buds :)

fatbandit 11-28-2011 01:45 PM

And without context, it makes even less of a difference. Even with a fantastic system, if all you have is 192, you wouldn't even be missing the difference 320 would make ;p

FunkMetalBass 11-28-2011 01:46 PM

There is a lot of lying about true bitrate amongst pirated music. Typically, things are encoded at higher bitrates, which is a conversion that can't really happen (you can't just convert to create what isn't there). What I've noticed is that tracks can have original bitrates of half of what they've been reencoded to show. With 320, I'm basically assuring myself that I get decent quality audio. It'll come in handy when I buy that Pivetta Opera amp and Swan 2.3 BHT speaker package for my home theater setup. :thumb:

Then again, poorly mixed music just has no hope. I had originally downloaded Coheed's "No World For Tomorrow" album, and thought that specific track was just of terrible sub-100kbps quality. Then I bought the album and realized that it wasn't the case. :(

If you have a fantastic system, I'd hope FLAC would be your standard.

Well, not really...

Because most people have an internal reference to what sounds good and what doesn't. It's hard to forget the first time you listened to a full bandwidth uncompressed file on a really great system. You should always be able to identify a compromised audio track without reference. If something makes it to CD, unless it's a hoirrrrrrible mix, the effects of MP3 compression sound almost nothing like a bad mix/song.

And you can hear the warbling on cymbals and the low end kind get a bit mushy and not as defined. All these artifacts become apparent on a greater listening system.

FMB: I had the same thing with the latest Dance Gavin Dance album. Unless the "preview" that I did was corrupted, there is some wack shit going on. Which is highly unlikely considering I know the reputation of the producer.

Convectuoso 11-28-2011 02:36 PM
If you have a fantastic system, I'd hope FLAC would be your standard.
Well, if you have an iPod, it needs to be ALAC. And second of all, it's very hard to "get" ALAC files. Thirdly drive space becomes the next problem. But I have my own counter argument that I have too much useless, unlistened to music that I should just cull and try and get as higher quality as possible.

But again, with your iPod, you usually aren't listened to the output of the iPod with a very high end system. Further, even with my Sennheiser HD650's the iPod's headphone preamp isn't capable of driving it very well (I turn it all the way up and it's not even too loud yet) and the low end is nowhere near as tight as on my Apogee Ensemble's headphone preamp.
