Actually, i'd say Ward and Butler are better, but that doesn't make Opeth any worse.

Txus 07-26-2006 07:33 PM

I really don't think Buttler is better than Martin, but then again....I don't like Sabbath so I can't really say anything about it because obviously Martin will always win in my mind.

Dio>Ozzy
Mikael is by far a better vocalist and lyricist than Ozzy.

Opeth is better than Sabbath for sure, Sabbath wasn't even as good as their contemporaries Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin.

MegaMustaine 07-26-2006 08:05 PM

Can someone tell me what their favorite Opeth Ghost Reveries song is? I have the album and have been trying to get into Opeth, but I just don't really like them very much. Any advice?

Shadows 07-26-2006 08:10 PM

The clean singing in Harlequin Forect doesn't appeal to you at all? That was the thing that first caught my attention on the album. Plus the guitar work on Beneath the Mire.

I disagree here. I'm obsessed with the Black Sabbath s/t though. No songs have EVER came close to how evil the original song Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath sounds. It's perfect.

Anyway, to the guy asking about GR, get one of the older albums. I don't even bother with GR anymore.

Daven 07-26-2006 08:14 PM

Harlequin Forest and Ghost Of Perdition are my favorite off GR.

I don't know about Martin Axenrot but Bill Ward, good as he may have been, was mediocre compared to Lopez.
Iommi vs. Lindgren? I can't separate Lindgren's and Akerfeldt's guitar styles but all three are excellent. Akerfeldt writes more original stuff though
No. Geezer was good, Mendez is great.
And Ozzy vs. Akerfedlt....

If I wanna hear evil music I listen to some King Diamond/Mercyful Fate.

But I still think Opeth is better than Sabbath, I'm not a big fan of both bands, I listen to them the same. IMO Ozzy's work with Sabbath was their most soft and boring.

I like Sabbath also, but I can't compare them to Opeth, they're too different from each other.

Ozzy has never even written lyrics!

I would accept, but not be 100% comfortable with:

Axe > Ward
Butler = Mendez
Iommi > Lindgren
Mikael > Ozzy

i am the robots 07-26-2006 09:32 PM

Lindgren > Iommi, and it's just no contest, I'm sorry.

pate 07-26-2006 09:33 PM

I'd say it's no contest the other way. But I would put Mike above Iommi.

I don't like some of Peter's solos.

Darkness 07-26-2006 09:39 PM

I find Iommis solos are usually pretty poor, actually. He's not bad at playing some quick blues licks, but thats it. His rhythm playing is what I like. But Mike and Peter are much more skilled in every category.

pate 07-26-2006 09:41 PM

I greatly agree with more skilled. I just like Iommi's playing more than a lot of Peter's.

And writing, Peter contributes very little, so Iommi wins that one.

I'll drop this right now, as I am no Opeth basher. They are in my top three bands.

I would have thought that someone that listens to so much music could appreciate Iomii. What do you think about him if you wern't comparing him to Opeth?

pate 07-26-2006 09:53 PM

First, learn to spell his name.
Second, leave.

I like Iommi alot, Sabbath is a great band.

But this is the Opeth thread, it's not even relavent anymore.

Just wanted to bring it up because I came back and there is about three moer pages on this Sabbath vs. Opeth stuff.

It's difficult to contribute when there's stupid troll running around.

Txus 07-26-2006 09:59 PM

Stop this Opeth Vs. Sabbath guys...we know who the winner is and this is an Opeth thread so STFU.

With this said, Morningrise is becoming my favorite Opeth album now and it's becoming one of my favorite 5 albums EVER.

pate 07-26-2006 10:02 PM

I can't seem to get into Morningrise that much. I love about half of it, and could do without the other half. I just might give it a run through right now.

Ditto. : - \

Its not my favourite Opeth album.

PeEpHoLe_10 07-27-2006 02:46 AM

Does anyone else in here barely like Morningrise at all?I really cant get into it for some reason.

Meatplow 07-27-2006 04:26 AM

I've only got Damnation, which i like a lot.

Whats the next step you guys would recommend?
Does anyone else in here barely like Morningrise at all?I really cant get into it for some reason.
I'm personally not that keen on most of that album, but I love "To Bid You Farewell" - it's one of my very favourite Opeth tracks. Even though a lot of its 10 plus minute length could be chopped out with little loss.

JamJar 07-27-2006 05:34 AM
Does anyone else in here barely like Morningrise at all?I really cant get into it for some reason.
I agree. I just can't get into Morningrise or Orchid. They're not really my sort of music. But TBYF destroys everything else.
Does anyone else in here barely like Morningrise at all?I really cant get into it for some reason.
I love Morningrise. I can't really rate their albums, because I like them all. But it is one of my favorites.

Kronos 07-27-2006 08:47 AM
I've only got Damnation, which i like a lot.

That's a tricky one, 'cos Damnation is absolutely nothing like any of their other albums, although there are some quieter tracks in most of them..

I think it's a case of take your pick and see, but personally I like Blackwater Park and Deliverence best on the whole.

beastman168 07-27-2006 08:57 AM

The first song I ever heard by Opeth was Master's Apprentices. I think right after that I went and bought the album Deliverance. I listened to it for about a month then I went and bought another album, "Blackwater Park". Yesterday I finally went and got "Ghost Reveries". I've listened to it about 4 times now and I love it. I own in all five albums by Opeth. "Damnation", "Ghost Reveries", "Still Life", "Deliverance", and "Blackwater Park". I don't really have a favorite Opeth song because they all kick ***, but Master's Apprentices has a special place in my heart, cause it was the first song I heard by them.

Neoteric 07-27-2006 09:14 AM

Hehe, I'm just getting into My Arms, Your Hearse

Master's Apprentices is one of my fave tracks ever - I just love the crushingly heavy opening riff - and Martin Lopez's 32nd note double bass - awesome.
Pity about his problems and him leaving the band - he's my drumming idol. I expect his replacement is also very good ( I'll find out in November), what is it with Opeth and the name Martin? The replacement drummer's called Martin too, and none of them are english. It's like an english band having three members called Pascal or something...

There's eight. You're missing Orchid, Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse.

I love it. It's so emotional.
