I think the dead were probably better musicians than the beatles, stones, and the who (except maybe moon), they (garcia?) were better songwriters than most of those guys except maybe lennon/mcartney. i think townshend was a great writer, but his guitar playing left something to be desired.
i think zeppelin was all around the best (skill, songwriting, live show), but im just a fanboy so its biased.
Keith Moon was definately a better drummer - Paige a better guitar player - Morrison just f***ing out of his god **** mind :thumb: |
Ya I disagree with what thick as a brick said too.
|
I Have become increasingly intrigued to check them out. I get my paycheck today so I ll probably get American Beauty.
American Beauty is the best Dead album to get if you are trying to get into them. After that get some DVDs |
No. The Grateful Dead are good, but all of those bands are better than them.
Your statement after this one is much more intelligent. I make these judgments after I have heard these bands for such a very long time. Of course it is opinion, but I can back each of those statements.
Badmoon, what did you think of the Festival Express documentary?
I haven’t actually seen all of it. My friend has it and I watched some of it though.
Well, writing wise, I could easily say (though opinion) that The Grateful Dead wipe all of those bands clearly out (maybe not The Beatles though). Skill wise, I believe they are more original than each. I believe Jerry Garcia is a much more accomplished guitarist than Townshend, Page, Harrison, Richards ect. His is surely one of the greatest acoustic guitarists ever. He was a very talented finger picker, and quite good on slide. Technically, I also believe Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead is a more proficient drummer than the rest. However, each could not take them in numerous fields. Phil Lesh isn’t as talented as John Entwistle. Though Lesh is very influence and original. The only definite factor each other band has over The Grateful Dead is singing. Though that can be debated if I you count Donna Jean Godchaux, but she wasn’t in the band for that long. /all opinion |
Speaking of the Dead, I just got the Grateful Dead (Skull and Roses) live album.
|
That is a fantastic album. Every song is great. :thumb:
That is a fantastic album. Every song is great. :thumb:
I remember you saying it was good and I decided to pick it up. So far I've only heard the first song (and I really liked it), so I'm excited about the rest of the album. |
Skill is completely irrelvant when it comes to how good a band is. And everyone has a different opinion about what sounds good.
Your article won't work unlessyou want to try to prove that they're the most skilled band ever at their instruments, and that can't possibly be done. The only thing left is to prove that they were more influencial than any other band. Trying to say that they're the best anything else is irrational. Any article would have to be 100% opinion in a subject that is subjective. Good luck :) |
You act as though I was trying to convert everyone here. Now, I'm am just putting a follow up opinion to some one elses. Quit trying to pull reasons out of your ass to show that my "article" can be disaproved, when I already stated that it's all opinion.

"article"???????? |
What else would it be called? An information pamphlet? And then we could go around putting them in people's mail boxes?
That's not a bad idea actually. |
The Grateful Dead are meh to me. Say what you will, but they're just meh.
That's the way I felt for some time, but all of the sudden I just started liking them. I think Badmoon e-hypnotised me.... |
"article"????????
Though, I don't believe their a correct way to respond to this. No, it is officially not an article, and article is by definition a section of something larger. For that is a whole, that is not broken into sections, nor has it real sections. But that's irrelevant. |

It seems as though the Grateful Dead revolution is taking flight though, even if you didn't intend to lead it. Apparently everyone is buying American Beauty now. |
/me got BTO's greatest hits today.
Support one of about 5 good Canadian bands ;) |
What else would it be called? An information pamphlet? And then we could go around putting them in people's mail boxes?

We're just talking about the large post I just previously wrote.
Warren Haynes FA posted on Music discussion. |
Maybe you're forgetting something. For you information: The Grateful Dead will be, and are, the greatest band in the world's history!
Dead > Beatles Dead > Stones Dead > Zeppelin Dead > Who Dead > Doors Dead > All of um
I think its was wise to leave Dylan of that:thumb: |
I actually forgot about Dylan.
|
I think its was wise to leave Dylan of that:thumb:
Hehe, that was a good call. |
I actually forgot about Dylan.
Did you forgot him.....on purpose? |
Grateful Dead is by far the greatest band ever
|
Then Pearl Jam, ha
|
Grateful Dead is by far the greatest band ever
Badmoon will like you. By the way Moon, you sure weren't lying about Skull and Roses. I love it :thumb: |
Did you forgot him.....on purpose?
No. |
The thread is in a dark mood today. As much as I dont like them, wasn't the BTO song You Aint Seen Nothin Yet about a person who stuttered?
|
That idea that Grateful Dead is the best band ever (when considering lyrics, instruments, and influence) is not only opinion but pretty weak. That can be said for almost any band that is half-way decent.
|

BTO songs aren't about much. Just listen to the kickass guitars ;) |
Star T.V. is doing a documentary on Randy Bachman.
If we've learned anything today its that- Neil>Every Band times 10000000 |
That idea that Grateful Dead is the best band ever (when considering lyrics, instruments, and influence) is not only opinion but pretty weak. That can be said for almost any band that is half-way decent.
How so? How is it weak? Give me some reasons. |
How so? How is it weak? Give me some reasons.
Allman Brothers Band can easily be seen as more influential, better instruments/music--lyrics probly not, but that's 2 out of 3 so yeah. Dylan could take lyrics and influence, that's 2 of 3 too. Beatles could pretty easily take 3 out of 3 along with Zep and Floyd. But me saying all of that is opinion (I guess although I truly believe its fact) but if I really tried I bet I could make arguments that Lynyrd Skynyrd > Grateful Dead even though you may feel there is no comparison. It's all opinion though and I think you're attempting to make it a fact that Grateful Dead is the best band of all time. |
Yes, that is why I had post NUMEROUS amounts of time that that whole post is opinion. And to think I didn't want to offend anyone.
is not only opinion

/All opinion
Where is the problem? |
Opinion?!?
 |
Of course it is opinion, but I can back each of those statements.
You're pretty much contradicting yourself right thar, but the fact that your making an article tells me that your trying to state that they are the best band ever..or tells me you have too much time on your hands...either/or whatever you win I don't care to argue about this since I only read the last page and saw where you said it was opinion and ****. EDIT: Eeeyyaakakak ;) |
I'm not going to make an article. The whole "I'm going to make an article stating how The Grateful pointless comment.
And don't fool around with the all too common "You have too much time on your hands" statement. You aswell as us, are on an internet forum talking to random people we have never met. We are all wasting our time, and could be doing better things. |
Did you say that Grateful Dead lacked lyrics in their music????
There are books and websites devoted completely to Jerry's lyrics and his memory, not to mention the lives people have devoted to the band and following it cross country. If there is one band that comes close to that of the Dead, its the Beatles, there would be no rock, grunge, punk, whatever, if it weren't for the accomplishments of those 2 bands. Think about it |
I too think that classic rock is making a huge comeback. Back in the day (i'm only 15...so back in the day wasn't all that long ago) well a couple of years ago...i was the only one listening to zeppelin and the doors...everyone else was groovin to eminem or some ****. Now...a most of my friends listen to zeppelin some kind of 60/70/80's rock bands. Everyone agrees that the new **** sucks.

EDIT-To the guy above me. How the hell do you groove to Eninem? You should honestly think about choosing your words better.. ANOTHER EDIT-Your avatar says Metallica is Bad Ass, just letting you know. |

Yea buddy, im in high school, and i've been to the dead 3 times, phish once, allman brothers, ccr, fogerty, there's nothing like listening to some classic rock hammered. Classic rock is definitely making a come back, now today's musicians need to start playing it again, and not that trash that is on the radio these days. There's only a few good bands left these days now that Phish is broken up, even though they will definitely come back someday. |
How so? How is it weak? Give me some reasons.
I really am a fan of the Dead, but compared to other bands, Phil Lesh & Bob Weir are a little weak when it comes to playing skill |
