Uh uh... Funeral Portrait > Dirge in boreness.
Both have one or two interesting riffs and what not, but to be quiet honest, Funeral seems much more boring than Dirge. At least Dirge has the gay acoustic start, which is a good thing, I suppose.
So the "gay" acoustic start is a good thing? Usually gay is a derogatory term around here, but whatever. So...which Opeth album is everyone's least favorite? Mine is My Arms, Your Hearse. |
I love Funeral Portrait, it's nice and heavy throughout which is something that the album really needed after the soft middle part of the eight tracks. It was nice to return back to Opeth's brutal side after hearing the gentle pieces.
But still, The Leper Affinity owns every other metal song on the planet.
There's not really a long soft section before TFP...BWP is extremely weighted toward heaviness, I'm not sure why people point it out as being more balanced. Leper Affinity - all heavy except a brief part in the middle and a minute of piano at the end Bleak -all heavy except a fairly short acoustic bit in the middle Harvest - all soft TDF - There isn't that much acoustic playing and even including the soft electric parts, it's still mainly heavy. Dirge - except for the intro and a little bit more, it's almost all heavy. TFP - same Patterns in the Ivy - 2 minutes of acoustic BWP - 3 minutes of acoustic, 9 minutes heavy I was just wondering, then, why people always say BWP is one of the more balanced albums. Still Life, Morningrise, and Gr are all MUCH more balanced. Least favorite album is either Orchid or GR. |

So...which Opeth album is everyone's least favorite? Mine is My Arms, Your Hearse.
I was going to edit, by saying "gay" as in "out-of-tune, silly, not very good" piece of introduction, which a vast majority of people in this thread don't seem to enjoy. So I think that pretty much explains it. I guess. Despite Ghost Reveries being not so good, I think I'd choose Deliverance, because it's not as consistent as the other albums. Consistent as in not the best singing, not the best songwriting, but some interesting riffage.
There's not really a long soft section before TFP...BWP is extremely weighted toward heaviness, I'm not sure why people point it out as being more balanced.
The middle acoustic-soft section after the first verse is very different from what it's been building up to that point. That makes it balanced. |
Blackwater Park is probably their 2nd heaviest, after Deliverance. It doesn't feel that heavy, though...
My least favorite Opeth album is definitely Ghost Reveries. Just not at all as amazing as their others. Still, not a bad album or anything. |

If so, you're the only person I know who thinks that. It used to be my least favorite album, but now I'm back into it and I think that "Black Rose Immortal" and "The Bid You Farewell" are simply great tracks. Also on the subject of Morningrise, didn't Mikael say that he hated "The Night and the Silent Water"? If so, why? It's a fairly decent track. |
Most old school/hardcore Opeth fans state that Morningirse is their best.
|
^^ I'll drink to that. :chug:
|
Orchid ftw.
I wonder what they would sound like if they took up a black metal sound? |
Least favorite album...either Orchid or MAYH.

Being "old school" and "hardcore" is stupid if you ask me. Their songwriting wasn't at their best by then, and Mikael's vocals weren't nearly as good as they are now. Just because it's old doesn't mean it's better. |

It's stupid to have a band that you love, and have loved since the beginning? Alright then. Lot's of people will argue that the songwriting was near it's peak, since the songs are all master peices in there own way. No, Mikaels vocals weren't at their peak, but the rawness, and imperfection worked to the CDs advantage. |

Wow, really? My Arms is an awesome album.. I can see how you might not like Orchid, but the latter has very few faults to my ears. |

So being bad is good? I just don't understand what you're getting out of this. |

People like the raw feel of that album. If you don't understand that... well, I feel for you. |
Least favorite album...either Orchid or MAYH.
Wow, that's crazy. I love My Arms, Your Hearse. That is probably the most complex album Opeth have ever recorded, both musically and lyrically, and they didn't even have a bass player at the time! That album is slowly crawling up my favorites list, mainly because of it's beautiful songwriting and very well put together riffs that complete my favorite concept album. |
People like the raw feel of that album. If you don't understand that... well, I feel for you.
I didn't really get a "feel" for it at all until I bought it.. now I honestly love it, whereas I used to believe it was Opeth's worst. |
People like the raw feel of that album. If you don't understand that... well, I feel for you.
Well I like some raw music every now and then, but I just find myself to like Opeth's later albums more, especially Blackwater Park, Still Life, and Damnation. Those would be my three favorites and by then they had truly perfected their sound, songwriting, and potential as a band. |
Also on the subject of Morningrise, didn't Mikael say that he hated "The Night and the Silent Water"? If so, why? It's a fairly decent track.
Mikael hates TNATSW primarily because he wrote it after his grandfather died and he doesn't want to bring back the memories and emotions of that time period. It's astonishing that they played it at the NYC show last week |

Yeah, that's fine. I can see where you're coming from. But just try to see what others see in Morningrise. It really is an incredible album. |

Oh, now it all makes sense. I bet he really plays his heart whenever he decides to play that song in front of an audience as a tribute to his grandfather. Did he tell the audience about it? Did he tell the audience about it?
From what I've heard, he didn't say much about it (if anything at all), he either just introduced it with a standard "this is off Morningrise, it's called The Night and the Silent Water" speech or he didn't say anything at all. That's the first time they've ever played it live. |

That's pretty cool that it was the first (and possibly last?) time that they will ever play it. Do they play The Leper Affinity in concert often? |
Do they play The Leper Affinity in concert often?
People have posted a few setlists. And that song I saw was played a few times. |

They opened with that song when I saw them back in 2004, and did a great job. |
People have posted a few setlists. And that song I saw was played a few times.
That's cool, because I would probably have an orgasm if I heard them play that in concert. :) :thumb: Didn't Mikael record the bass parts on Morningrise? If so wow, that album has the band's best bass parts out of all of their releases. NP - Opeth - To Bid You Farewell (I lovelovelove this song) |

No. Johan DeFarfalla did. You're thinking of the ''Hearse''. |
No he didn't, it was that Johan Defarlla (sp?) guy.
|
No. Johan DeFarfalla did. You're thinking of the ''Hearse''.
My mistake. Anyways, Johan played some of the band's best bass lines ever, especially on To Bid You Farewell. That track is just chock full of great grooves and licks. |

Agreed 100%. It's a shame he's no longer with them. Morningrise has some of the best bass riffs I've ever heard, especially on To Bid You Farewell. |

They are certainly enjoyable, and that song has been a huge influence on how I play in my band. I try and avoid just backing the guitars all of the time. |
