Yeah, to get the diatonic seventh chords within a key you just keep building up in diatonic thirds.

So triads:

C (CEG)
D- (DFA)
E- (EGB)
F (FAC)
G (GBD)
A (ACE)
B diminished (BDF)

Seventh chords:

Cmaj7 (CEGB)
D-7 (DFAG)
E-7 (EGBD)
Fmaj7 (FACE)
G7 (GBDF)
A-7 (ACEG)
Bb -7b5 aka "half diminished" (BDFA)

You've got the right idea - just keep building up in thirds within the key.

If it makes it easier to learn riffs he's playing in drop tuned positions, then stick with drop B. Otherwise, just do whatever you're most comfortable with, cuz it doesn't really matter :p

Tuning B F# B E isn't a pleasant thing for the neck of a bass in the long term.

BEAD is probably preferable though, at least it keeps the fourth intervals in tact so the tension should be proportionate. It's hard to find a 4 string that will tune down that far without losing a lot of string tension.

Probably want to wait for FMB on this, he's into all that stuff.

It's not so much the fact it's a 4 string, it's more to do with what gauge the strings are. Longer scale would probably help a bit too. Personally I'd go B standard still though.

To answer the question, either tuning is fine, it just depends on what you prefer. Neither is really going to cause any havoc on your bass neck - it's rather resilient.

I'd recommend that you look into buying single strings and making your own string sets. Traditional string sets are quite poorly designed in terms of string tension, and playing around with dropped tunings only makes them less ideal (under-tensioned strings sound dull and clickity-clackity).

I see you're in England, so I don't know what options you have. D'Addario seem to be found worldwide, so maybe you can find a place that sells singles and try a set like this:

(BEAD) If you like a .100 E-string
.135 - .100 - .075 - .055

(BEAD) If you like a .105 E-string
.145 - .105 - .080 - .060

(BF#BE) If you like a .100 E-string
.135 - .090 - .065 - .050

(BF#BE) If you like a .105 E-string
.145 - .095 - .070 - .055


Each of those will provide balanced tension for more consistent tone and feel.

I've fallen in love with them - their strings last for longer than usual and they are incredibly flexible - I use a .150 for all of my low B's and even their .200 for my low F#. They make strings all the damned way down to a .254 too. :eek:

In England, Newtone are the people for custom string sets. But it's expensive (it will be no matter where you go for specialist stuff).

Other than that, possibly Status - I think they do custom sets. Beyond that, you're down to stock stuff or US imports I think.

Just found out yesterday that there's no way I can achieve a physics degree on top of my math degree by Spring of 2013 because of the scheduled course offerings. Kinda bummed, to be honest. :(

Yeah Canada seems really nice.

If I had to leave Australia I think I'd fit in most comfortably in either Canada or New Zealand.

I think places like Greenland and Sweden are really beautiful too but I'd never survive without being surrounded by English speakers.

Canada is pretty good. Go to one coast or the other, though. Stay away from central Canada unless you like rednecks, assholes, and politicians.

The only cities I know of are Toronto, Vancouver, and Quebec I think.
